About this house rental
This unique, early 1800’s historic house sits 50 FEET from the railroad. The train blows by 3x during the day, tooting & whistling away & once or twice at night. It is the second oldest residence built in Midway. The plot of land where the house sits was one of the initial purchases from the railroad company which was the first town in KY to build a Railroad Town.
Guests will enjoy their private, bright & cozy upstairs with 2 nicely sized bedrooms with plenty of closet space. The bathroom in between the bedrooms & breakfast nook is very small, but clean & efficient. There is a mini fridge, coffee & tea station. Ice bucket @ 5:00 pm each night is available upon request. Entrance & exit is through the front door & through the one-room art gallery which is closed off from the rest of the house. 9 ORIGINAL VERY STEEP & NARROW STAIRS leads to the cheery upstairs accommodations. STAIRS ARE NOT FOR PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY ISSUES. BIG, HEAVY SUITCASES ALSO WILL POSE A PROBLEM IF YOU ARE NOT UP FOR WRANGLING THEM UP THE 9 STAIR CLIMB. Please see pictures :)
Ample off street parking is available. If you are bicycle-touring/racing, garage arrangements in back can be be made for bicycles. Off street horse trailer parking can also be arranged.
Ellen, the host, lives in the back part of the house which is closed off from the art gallery room & upstairs. The only contact would be if Ellen is in the gallery with customers during the day. Since the house is on the residential side of Main St. (aka Railroad St.) people do not know really know the gallery is there. It is more of an appointment-based gallery which Ellen prefers for much needed private time in the studio (which is also closed off). She can be reached anytime if needed on her cell phone preferably by text during your stay. Guests really enjoy walking to the restaurants & shops which are only half a block away.

Beautifully appointed home in historical and charming Midway where art, restaurants (foodie delight), unique boutiques, quiet walks and pleasant greetings are plentiful. Downtown is just across the street to these conveniences. Taking a tour of a horse farm, Bourbon distillery or winery is only minutes away and well worth the time spent. Lexington is minutes away for all the attractions, but quite honestly Midway and this beautiful home provided such serenity that we felt this was a home away from home and it was hard to leave. The host is very warm and welcoming and we were treated like friends as if we've known each other our whole life. This entire trip has been memorable for the ages and this property and host were the little gem that made is absolutely perfect!

A girlfriend and I had an event in Frankfort, just 15 miles away, and wanted a more interesting experience than can be found in a hotel. We both really enjoyed this home, full of the owner/artist’s colorful, whimsical art. Each of us had a spacious bedroom of antique furniture, with a small well equipped bathroom, and a sitting area with window, coffee, tea and small refrigerator off of the landing between us. The gardens were beautiful, and Ellen was a great host. The steps are steep but we had no problems climbing them, and the rope handrail felt authentic. We would definitely stay here again.
We also enjoyed the eclectic little shops and restaurants in downtown Midway, within easy walking distance.

Beautiful home, perfectly and accurately described. Ellen was a great host. Her art is inspirational. The small town of Midway was a breath of fresh air from the city. Everyone we encountered was gracious and polite. We can't wait to visit again.

As two working moms, we were excited to have a weekend where our calendars aligned. This cute little house was the perfect space and location. In the morning we were able to walk and grab a cup of coffee before heading out to a few distilleries. In the evenings, we took advantage if the nearby restaurants.
The space was clean and there were cute touches throughout. As stated in the description, the stairs up are narrow and steep. The shower is also very small, functional and clean, but small.
If you sleep late, you will want to know there are a couple trains that go by “early”(after 7 am). The tracks are just on the other side of the street close to the front of the house. As an early riser, this wasn’t a problem for me.
Overall, it was prefect for two moms needing a couple of nights away. I would definitely stay here again.

My stay couldn’t have been more perfect!
The horse park is a short drive and several excellent restaurants are within walking distance. The town of Midway and the accommodations were absolutely charming. Ellen’s beautiful artwork, fascinating life story and love of horses (as evidenced in her art) made my stay even more memorable and special.
I would definitely recommend a stay here. Ellen, thank you so much for a fabulous stay.

Staying at Ellen's was very refreshing. Ellen was very easy to work with and very patient with answering my questions. I was a little concerned about being near the train tracks, but it was very cool! Most of the time we didn't know it had went by! The steep stairs were challenging, but staying in a historical place made it worthwhile.

So cute but steep steps
I was looking forward to staying in this darling rental in Midway above the studio of a well known Kentucky artist. Someone mentioned the steep steps in a post. I contacted the owner and we had some miscommunications. The steps are narrow and very steep. Not for older folks with bad knees.
Great location but we could not navigate the steps much less get our small suitcases up.
This is a wonderful place… so picturesque with a cute garden in front. Restaurants and cute shops close by. I hate to post this but I think there are many older travelers who might have this problem too.

Perfect accommodations for our Midway stay.
Again, we were not disappointed staying at Ellen’s in Midway. No problems coming and going as we pleased. Very comfy rooms and beautiful artwork. Since we are repeat guests, we knew the stairway is steep and bathroom sink is small but not a big deal. The downtown has nice shops and restaurants. Beautiful drives everywhere and close to Lexington. . We love staying here and will definitely be back. Ellen is a wonderful artist and hostess.

Keeneland Outing
Quaint & enjoyable for those who can navigate steep stairs & cute, tiny bathroom. Two spacious bedrooms; we created a cozy sitting area in the larger room.
Train lovers will enjoy close proximity to the tracks and the romantic sounds of it passing through the sweet town, which has wonderful shops and dining options.
The owner is an accomplished artist with her studio and gallery on the first floor.

Great cozy place to stay if you’re in Midway. Easy accessibility to restaurants and shops. Mini fridge, coffee and comfortable beds. Beautiful artwork and decor. Great place to go and get away from everything. Midway is a charming small town. Loved the limited technology, just what you bring, it’s a great way to live. Ms Skidmore’s house was charming and elegant. Her artwork is a very nice touch throughout. Highly recommended.

Such an enjoyable experience!
Ellen was a fantastic host! We enjoyed staying in her beautiful home. It was pristinely clean, and filled with her beautiful art! We so appreciated the goodies she left for us. Midway is a jewel! We enjoyed being able to walk to dinner each evening and back to the house to relax. I would highly recommend this property for anyone looking to disconnect from our crazy world and get away for a few days. It was a wonderful experience!

Exquisite! Small Town Charm with EVERYTHING nearby
We had a perfect stay at Ellen’s lovely home. The bedrooms were comfortable and enchanting (Ellen is an artist and her amazing talent shows in the house decor- you will simply melt into it, it’s that comfy). The bathroom has everything you need, check in was effortless, and the Midway Bakery goodies Ellen left for us at the coffee spot were just the thing to get us started.
Ellen’s home is smack dab in the middle of everything. One day we tasted Bourbon at nearby Buffalo Trace distillery, wine at Equus Run Vineyards, and enjoyed the genteel horse farms and the bucolic countryside in between. The next day we enjoyed charming Midway- strolled the downtown street and shopped the independent retailers, had pizza for lunch and topped it off with dinner at an upscale farm to table restaurant, Heirloom (highly recommend for food quality and values, super cocktails and attentive, yet relaxed, service).
We had a wonderful weekend and highly recommend Ellen, her VRBO and the Midway area. We will return for Keeneland and more distilleries!
