About this cottage rental
Come and enjoy all that Hamlin Lake has to offer at this one of a kind property. Located down a 100 yard private road with 425 feet of pristine sandy lake front, there is no way you will feel crowded. Why "Southside"? This property is arguably the southernmost cottage on Lower Hamlin. What does that mean? Amazing views of all of Lower Hamlin and the famous sand dunes, and a stones throw from everything that Ludington has to offer.
Head south approximately 5 mins to downtown Ludington, where you can shop and stop at House of Flavors for an ice cream cone you won't regret. Head west approximately 5 mins (or less!) to Lake Michigan for a marvelous sunset, or to the Ludington State park to hike one of the numerous trails. This place is location, location, location!!! Walk or bike down the road to Sargent Sand's Lost Lake, where you can swim in the warm waters while enjoying the peaceful dunes. Rather boat to the dunes on the northern part of the lake and enjoy the comradery there? Bring your boat and park it at the dock. We provide rubber fenders and have cleats to tie your boat to during your stay. We also have a paddle boat and different yard games that guests are welcome to.
Full disclosure: This vacation property is the lower level of a 3600 sq. ft. lake house with it's own private entrance. There is a locked door that separates the top and bottom level. The pictured patio is the rental's own private patio. The owner visits the property regularly (typically weekends) to maintain it, and occupies the top floor. There is no central air, but a brand new attic fan has just been installed to pull cool evening air through the entire unit. In addition, there are ceiling fans in all bedrooms, as well as portable fans.
The rental was recently renovated in 2021 and is all brand new. If you would like to bring your dog please reach out to us and we can chat!

We enjoyed our stay at the South Side Sanctuary. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The house was comfortable and spacious. It had a great location, on Hamlin lake just outside of the Ludington State Park and close to many other attractions. I highly recommend the South Side Sanctuary for your next Ludington visit.

We had a wonderful stay. We had our children and grandchildren come during the stay. It was great location for all ages. The nearby State park and closeness to Lake Michigan beaches for play and sunsets was perfect for the older kids. Hamlin lake where our lovely house was located was perfect for the smaller kids to swim and play. Fishing was fun on the lake for our fisher folk. Our hosts were absolutely wonderful and helpful during our stay. They are there on weekends in their upstairs residence but we didn’t find them intrusive and they were lovely to visit with. We had at different times just 4 adults and 2-4 children there each week. Our accommodations were spacious. With only one bathroom we just had to be creative but we didn’t find it a problem as we were all family. The kitchen was well equipped as we all cook….I always travel with my own knife. Ludington is close by and we had fun adventures exploring there. Shuffleboard in the park was fun for all ages. We played golf on a great course 5 min away and tennis and pickleball in town. It was a wonderful getaway and hope to return.

This property worked perfectly for our family of 6 adults and two young children. We enjoyed both the proximity to the State Park beaches and Hamlin Lake right outside the door. The host was very helpful both before and during our stay. Everything we needed to enjoy a beach vacation was here.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and took advantage of all that was offered, inside and out. An added bonus was the close proximity to the hidden lake across the road. The Petzol dots are very helpful and those cinnamon rolls were delish! Thanks for sharing your little piece of paradise.

Nice get away
We really enjoyed our stay . The home and yard were beautiful with a great view of Lake Hamlin. The location was ideal as it was close to Ludington Stat Park (best State Park we have seen) and close to town as well. Tom and his wife and family were all very nice and helpful. We would reccomend it to anyone.

Stunning views!
Beautiful house on Hamlin Lake. The house was spacious for our group of 9 and well stocked. We enjoyed beautiful views of the lake which is just steps from the house. The property is large and we were able to play yard games, have fires, bbq and fish. The water is shallow enough for kids to swim and play. The neighbors at the time we were there were quiet and the property had a lot of privacy. The owners did come in on Friday night and we were able to meet them and their dogs. They were very friendly, however may be something to consider if you want complete privacy. The area was wonderful and the state park just minutes away had so many things for us to do! We would definitely come again!!

Excellent hosts!
The Petzolds were excellent hosts, sharing their recommendations for things to do in the area and even bringing us cinnamon rolls for breakfast one day! The rental unit had everything we needed to be comfortable. The view is beautiful on the water. It's close to town but in such a nice, quiet area. We were in town for a wedding, so unfortunately didn't get to use all the outdoor amenities, but we'd definitely stay here again!

Wonderful Labor Day weekend
We had a wonderful weekend stay at Southside. Tom, Kathy and their family were all very friendly, accommodating and helpful in enjoying our stay not only at their house but in Ludington. Our boys loved running the large yard, sitting on the dock and playing yard games. The location was tranquil and had an amazing view. The beds and bedding were very comfortable and everyone commented on how well they slept. We only wish we had more time to be there and enjoy it! Highly recommended.

Great family gathering place
My wife and I, four adult children and 2 of their boy friends converged at Tom and Kathy’s place for a summer getaway. The sleeping arrangements were perfect and the beauty rest mattresses were very comfortable. We enjoyed fishing off the dock, paddling around in the paddle boat, visiting the state park, playing pool, roasting marshmallows around the campfire and dining at several of the downtown restaurants.
Tom and Kathy were great hosts and made us feel very comfortable at there place.

Vacation
Owners Tom and Cathy and daughter Annie were fabulous hosts. The property has the best view on Hamlin lake. The sandy area water front was perfect for our 4 and 7 year old grandsons to play, kayak, swim. Our 7 year old grandson caught a 16" small mouth bass and made his trip fantastic. The boat docking was perfect for my 18.5' Crownline 185SS. The kitchen was well equipped. You won't need to bring anything. The sleeping arrangements were also fabulous. All the beds were very comfortable and the master bed was separate from the two family sleeping rooms. All were clean and the bedding was plentiful. The games and pool/pingpong table were great fun for kids and adults. The firepit was safe and included chairs, presplit wood along with a water supply to ensure safety. They provided a gas grill and gas tabletop in a covered area which was perfect for cooking meals outside. The inside of the property was spacious, clean, comfortable and included WiFi.
Owner Tom took time to show me the layout of the lake, places to tube, ski, swim and places to avoid.
All in all the experience was fabulous. We are ready to book next year's vacation at the Southside Sanctuary!

Beautiful Location
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this property. The hosts were super accommodating and friendly as they were visible on the weekends at their property upstairs. My family and friends enjoyed playing games on the waterfront lawn and having our boat docked right there was convenient for fishing, tubing, and boat rides. The dunes are right across the lake and the kids enjoyed playing and swimming there.

Lovely property on the lake
Our family had such a great time during our stay! The view is incredible. This property is in the perfect location, on Hamlin lake and also close to the state park, Lake Michigan, and town if needed. Everything is recently renovated, cozy and clean. Our kids loved the ping pong table on the rainy day. The owners are also wonderfully kind, hospitable, and very helpful.
