About this house rental
Enjoy a relaxing Adirondack getaway any time of the year in our year round home. We are located just outside the Village of Old Forge, right off Route 28, 3 homes from the Steakhouse Restaurant on the 3rd hole of the Thendara Golf Course. We are a nice walk or short drive to the Adirondack Railroad, VanAukens Restaurant/Hotel and the Moose river. Not to mention all the great shops and restaurants Old Forge has to offer is just minutes away.
The Bears Den has everything you could want to enjoy a true Adirondack vacation. The home offers a beautiful cozy floor plan, with big living room, good sized dining area, and fully equipped kitchen, high speed internet and free WiFi. One master bedroom with king sized bed, 3 bedrooms upstairs one with a queen sized bed, one with a full sized bed and one with a bunk bed combo and futon. Two full bathrooms. Beautiful front porch for morning coffee or evening dinner, enjoy the firepit out back as well. The home has a central heating system, ceiling fans in each bedroom, dishwasher, microwave, Keurig single serve coffee maker, drip coffee maker, gas grill, and washer and dryer. The home also is equipped with a whole house automatic generator in the event of a power outage - your stay will not be interrupted.
Please note this home is SELF CATERING. I do not have a cleaning service, while almost all of my guests love saving the extra cash and picking up after themselves. If you do not, I recommend finding a home that is not self catering.
SELF CATERING also means, that while I do my best to keep the house fully stocked. If something gets damaged by a guest prior to your stay, I will do my best to replace it but I cannot always get there in between guests with a replacement.
WIFI can go in and out during your stay, this is not something I can control and or fix. Spectrum is our provider and while they do a wonderful job at response time from storms and outages. Me personally cannot control or fix that.
Guests are responsible for taking their own garbage at check out. There is no road side trash service because of bears-
For those occasional rainy days or to keep you in touch with the outside world (should you wish to), the house is equipped with a TV in the great room, living room, and a small television in one bedroom.
There are so many things to do in and around Old Forge. There are hiking trails, bike trails, canoeing/kayaking on the Moose River or Fulton Chain Lakes, boating, fishing, swimming at the free public beach or the Water Safari Enchanted Forest, canoe/kayak/power boat rentals, white water rafting, sight seeing cruises on the Fulton Chain Lakes, golf, horseback riding, scenic ski lift at McCauley Mountain, sea plane rides at 7th Lake, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.
In the village of Old Forge there are many restaurants & pizzerias, Adirondack gift shops, Adirondack furniture & decorations stores, a full grocery store, Kinney pharmacy, a movie theater that shows between 4 & 6 different current movies, an arcade, Enchanted Forest/Water Safari amusement park, Calypso Cove (go-carts, bumper boats, rock climbing wall, batting cages, arcade), miniature golf.
There is easy access to the well known Old Forge snowmobile trail system. You can also ski at McCauley Mountain (about 5 minutes from the house) or Gore Mountain (a little over 1 hour).

We travelled to the area with 2 families (with kids). Rhi is a very responsive host and so sweet. She accommodated an early check-in and was very responsive. This is the first time staying in a property that offered self-cleaning. My definition of clean and others are just too different to ever do it again. The floors just felt dirty and we cleaned quite a bit when we first arrived and we definitely left the house cleaner than when we arrived. The house is old and definitely needs a little TLC. The beds are not the comfiest either. Location is wonderful. We were so close to everything we wanted to do. It worked for what we needed and our kids had fun. When booking be aware you are responsible for taking all your trash and recyclables to the drop station or with you or you’ll be charged. The drop station has limited hours which we thought was slightly inconvenient. Thank you for sharing your property

Property fairly clean, easy check in process but there was concern of cleanliness, after walking barefoot in house our feet were black (we believeaimly from carpet in kitchen) and previous renters pill box on fridge. House was closed up and first smelled musty after opening windows musty smell came out. There were a few fans, and we also brought a couple extra glad we did because it was very warm weekend. In the morning it was discovered there was no hot water, that was an easy fix owner did get back and stated there was a switch we needed to flip.we had 10 guest and there was lack of silverware for all to eat at same time, there were only 3 Teaspoons. (Teaspoons esp we had cereal for breakfast). They don't charge a cleaning fee guest are supposed to vacuum and clean but vacuum did not work properly the brush wasn't spinning and vacuum clogged with hair.

Stay was nice the home location was good. Did not feel comfortable on the step from the house to the garage as the door has no way to keep open.

We booked this property and filled each bed with friends to experience the eclipse. While the host couldn't control the weather, it ended up being the perfect location (and experience)! The house was just as described and the kitchen was fully stocked with every pan or utensil you could think of, which was helpful as we prepared each meal at the house (all ten of us fit around the table). Central location - we took a walk to the train depot, fire pit was used to cook lunch over, plenty of hot water, heat was responsive (didn't need the blankets she offered). We were very appreciative of the opportunity to save on a cleaning fee and do it ourselves. Host was also generous to flex on the arrival time, as we were staying during the off season.

Red flag when it says they do not hire a cleaning company but expect the renters to clean when they leave which I always do I sweep and mop and vacuum clean the bathrooms but here we also had to wash the sheets and towels which I did. We were told the beds were made with clean sheets when we got ready for bed none of the beds were made we had to search for sheets all the pillow cases were still on the pillows so obviously they weren’t clean. There were no towels in the upstairs bathroom because they were still in the dryer. The one bedroom we couldn’t use because there was a spring poking you in the back. I would suggest new mattress on all beds. Plus right behind the house is another house it is a shared driveway. I have learned my lesson and will never rent from someone who doesn’t have a cleaning company

This property is extremely adorable and in a perfect location. It is close to all the amenities and attractions Old Forge has to offer but enough of a distance where it’s peaceful. The property is very well maintained, clean, and spacious. We had 9 people stay and all had plenty of room. The kids keep asking when we will go back! Rhi was phenomenal to work with and get to know. We will definitely be returning and look forward to expanding our friendship with the owners over the years!

The house was spacious and clean, and was stocked with nearly everything you may need! Check in and check out were simple, with straightforward instructions making for a stress-free stay! Communication with the host was excellent as well. I would absolutely recommend staying in the bears den!

To start with Rhi is an amazing host, Communication was fantastic and anything we needed she made available. The house was perfect, just a quick ride in the car to downtown Old Forge and the water Park. House was very clean and cozy. Next time we go up we may rent both of her homes, as they are one in front of the other. We spent a lot of time on the front porch together, didn’t get a chance to use the fire pit out back this time but it’s a nice feature. It was great having a dryer after coming home with wet towels from the park, it really felt like home❤️

I am a D.I.Y. 'er and I also take pride in cleanliness in our own home and prioritizing maintenance issues. I also realize there is no cleaning fee w/property and my wife, and I were not impressed w/the prior rentals cleaning jobs. Well to start with downstairs the bathroom shower curtain is dirty on bottom and when you turn on the shower the water creates a vacuum and pulls the curtain on you making it impossible to keep it from hitting your body, so we opted to take our showers upstairs. Also, if your arms are five to six feet in length the toilet paper roll holder is perfect. The toilet fixture inside sticks and toilet will run continuously unless you remove back and fix. Never used microwave because it was so dirty inside. Also, garbage in both cans upon arrival and the toaster was so full of years of crumbs I ended up cleaning it thoroughly before use. Upstairs bathroom lacks a fan or does not work. There should also be disposable gloves for guests if we are expected to clean our mess and prior guests poor cleaning habits. The BBQ grill rack was so built -up w/burnt food we opted to pass on it. I also wondered why there were no pics of the refrigerator until I seen it for myself but there one in the garage is in better shape and could be a replacement. We also ended up having to purchase bedding a week prior because I was not aware we needed to supply our own sheets. The fire pit was also covered w/pine branches which may have been from previous renter as well. The price we paid to rent should not interfere with our vacation in any way and it just seems as though a lot of items should have been taken care of and inspected by the owner prior to us arriving and to replace items in need of repair.
