About this cottage rental
This 1927 Southern Railroad Caboose X61 is located right in the heart of the Charming Historic Railroad town of Saluda, North Carolina overlooking the railroad tracks, once the steepest railroad grade in the United States until the trains stopped running through Saluda. One of 10 built in 1927 for Central of Georgia and approaching it's 100th Birthday it's been restored and now has all the modern amenities to make you feel right at home yet retaining it's historic charm. This Historic Caboose includes a full kitchen including all stainless-steel appliances, Refrigerator-Freezer, a full Oven featuring an AirFryer, Microwave, combo Coffee/Keurig maker as well as all the cooking and dishware utensils you'll need. Additionally is the Living Room with a very comfortable futon and sitting area with a 32" HDTV with Spectrum cable. Step up to the Cupola and enjoy looking out and imagine how the railmen saw it years ago to let the conductors know of impending perils.
For your comfort to compliment this special train car we've added a Master Suite with a King Bed, a large bathroom with double sinks, 65" LG Smart HDTV with Spectrum Cable service and a walk-in closet Both TV's will accommodate all streaming services
In addition there's a large front covered deck with ample seating. We've also added a very spacious Saluda City View Rooftop Terrace where you can enjoy your favorite beverages with a wonderful view overlooking the City of Saluda and the railroad tracks that is the steepest grade on the Eastern Seaboard. There's also a gas firepit up top as well as a rolling Ice chest and Weber gas grille.
Just walk out your front door and step back in time in this historic town. Have breakfast or lunch at the Wakey Monkey or Wildflour Bakery , have dinner at one of the many restaurants in town or take a short ride to Tryon, Hendersonville or Asheville and many other charming towns. Choose from plenty of activities including kayaking down the Green River, Ziplining down the Gorge, hiking or cycling some of the most scenic roads you'll find anywhere.
If you are a cyclist just keep your bikes and cycling gear on the deck and head out to some of the best cycling in Western North Carolina. The Hotel Domestique 17 is located just 15 miles down the beautiful Greenville Watershed Road. Inspired by world famous cyclist George Hincapie this is a great place to ride to take a break and head back up the watershed to Saluda.

Really cool place to stay and loved the town of Saluda. Would stay again in the future

We were impressed with the cleanliness of the property! We loved the rooftop fire pit.
Be aware that during rafting season, the nearby rafting company starts up around 7:30am.

We didn't want to leave!! Such an amazing place in a really great town. The Caboose was so warm and cozy. It has everything we needed. The rooftop deck was so great in the evenings. A great little piece history. I have already recommended it to all our friends.

As a major Southern Railway buff, having the opportunity to stay in Central of Georgia X-61was simply outstanding. The mix of modern / rustic decor and the railroad history is just right. The way that this Caboose has been preserved and re-imagined, while being historically accurate, provides every comfort of home imaginable with some bouses!
It was an exceptional birthday surprise and I look forward to returning.

Although modified on the inside to better accomodate guests, it is a REAL caboose complete with trucks and couplers. Did wish it had the potbelly stove for nostalgia sake, but enjoyed breakfast in the cupola. Bedroom and bath off the side was spaceous. Weather and time prevented use of the upper deck. Parking in back was "difficult" for large pickup truck, but simply parked in front at the operating railroad signal. Highly recommend the experience and the area.
5.0
The property is within walking distance to restaurants and shops. If you have a truck or large vehicle the parking behind the caboose is very tight and turning around takes a bit more than a 03 point turn.

We unfortunately had to cut short our stay after one night due to an emergency back home but I can’t imagine a nicer place to stay in Saluda. I hope we have an opportunity to return.

We loved our stay! It was the perfect babymoon spot for my husband and I before we welcome our first baby in January. The town is beautiful, and we definitely would come back for another visit!

Sweet and unique stay in downtown Saluda, NC. The caboose was very well appointed and thoughtfully designed. It had everything we needed to enjoy a few nights in this nice little mountain town.

The X61 is exactly as described. Its location is perfect for enjoying all Saluda has to offer (Wildflour pizza!) while still maintaining a quiet and comfortable interior. Our grandson was hesitant to leave the cupola. He’s a train lover and was enchanted with the caboose. We appreciated the spacious, comfortable main suite. It was a memorable stay!

We enjoyed our stay in the caboose! The restoration is beautiful and the owners took care in saving a part of the history of Saluda. The property is very clean, and the special touch of complimentary wine and glasses were a very nice touch. We really enjoyed sitting on the upper deck just relaxing. I highly recommend staying in the caboose when visiting Saluda. You will not be disappointed!

Everything was as advertised and the check-in and checkout processes were both the easiest I have ever had. It was truly a great stay

Our grandsons love trains. The Escape was perfect for a weekend adventure trip and we love how close it is to downtown.

We had a great stay at the X61. The description of the accommodations and pictures were all very accurate. We liked the the little touches like the working railroad lamps and labeled wine glasses. It can be a little busy on the weekends with Green River Adventures right in front; however, the staff are super friendly and they did a great job making sure we had access to our driveway at all times (and we did a couple of their outings while there and they were great). The top deck is a great spot to eat and take in the sites of town; you're right on top of the action but it also feels very private. Fantastic to be able to walk to everything. Highly recommend and would stay there again.

Fantastic location right in downtown Saluda. You can walk everywhere and the view from the rooftop is amazing.

The Escape in Saluda is a fantastic experience for young and old alike. Our family very much enjoyed this scenic mountain town and cozy caboose! The property is extremely clean and well kept. The upper deck is perfect for taking in mountain views or roasting marshmallows for s’mores. Take heed about the intrigued caboose visitors and if finding people on your rental porch or trying to turn around in the tight parking area behind the caboose aren’t for you, make use of the provided private property sign and chains. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely visit again.

This is a really cool property with lots of thoughtful touches and the chance to live with a little history. It is an easy walk to the great shops and restaurants of downtown Saluda, and is just three minutes from the Interstate. Right next door to Green River Outfitters which we also highly recommend. We had a nice evening by the fire pit and our daughter loved being in the caboose. Highly recommended!

This is the coolest spot in town! Saluda is such a cute little town and the caboose is within walking distance of everything. By far the most amazing property we’ve ever stayed in! Can’t wait to go back!

One of the most memorable vrbo 'condos' we have ever stayed at for vacation. The caboose did not disappoint. Super clean, all the amenities (fire pits, grill, complimentary wine with wine glasses, corn hole set), walking distance to town with shops and restaurants, and truly unique experience that the whole family will not forgot. We will be back.

We came to town for a family wedding. The Escape was a perfect place to relax between events. We did not cook or watch tv but I loved the decor. It was fun and entertaining. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. The porches were great hang out spaces. We’d love to stay again when we are in the area with more time for exploring.

What a unique experience! The master suite attached to the old caboose was just perfect.

Because our 14 year old son has loved trains since he was 2 years old, we knew we had to stay at this property rental. The property is exactly as described and the location is in close proximity of excellent restaurants.

Everything about this property was better than I anticipated. Property was almost in brand new condition and shows to have been restored in 2021. Very quaint. Modern appliances. Warm. Entertainment systems included. Rooftop bbq area was amazing.
Only one minor issue that didn't affect happiness. The shower had towel hangers that were very attractive but one of them if touched with more than a tiny bit of pressure would pop the retaining round black nut off. It was a bit annoying. I recommend the property owner slap some new shower towel racks on and everything would be perfect! I mention this issue to be helpful and not critical.
Everything was great. Saluda was fun as well.

The previous reviews are on point. No disappointments here. My wife absolutely loved the place. We spent a lot of time planning on all the things we were going to do while we were on our trip and while we did enjoy ourselves, the highlight of this trip was caboose! They went overboard to ensure we felt welcomed and special. The bed was VERY comfortable. The linen and towels were top quality. The HVAC worked perfectly. The fire table and fire pit were awesome. I could keep going on and on. We will certainly be back!
