About this house rental
Rustic river comfort with endless outdoor possibilities.
Located only a few miles north of downtown Durango, and 20 minutes from Purgatory Ski Resort, this home sits on 22 beautiful riverside acres in the Animas River Valley. Snowplow on-site and driveway will be plowed first thing in the morning so you can be first in line to ski powder. This is a fantastic place for families or groups of friends to enjoy a few days in nature surrounded by the nearby rusty red foothills, snow capped peaks, and the landscape dotted with cottonwoods. If you’re relaxing indoors, the many windows offer amazing views from all sides of the house. We love our home as a comfortable yet adventurous getaway, and we hope you will too!
There are 5 bedrooms, 3 ½ bathrooms, and the house sleeps 11 comfortably. Sleeping arrangements include 2 king beds, 2 queen beds, and 3 singles. The kitchen is fully equipped with a large comfy dining table, breakfast bar, and everything you will need to prepare gourmet meals to enjoy at our dining table or on the riverside porch. There is a full size washer and dryer as well as a full size refrigerator with ice maker. The spacious wrap around porch includes a porch swing, day bed, outside dining setup and gas grill that overlooks the river and large trees, one with a rope swing.
Additional features include a semi-circular 10 person couch, gas fireplace, 65 inch screen TV in the living room, a kids/entertainment room upstairs with a 55 inch screen TV, a wood burning stove in the entry way, and high speed WiFi and internet. The basement includes a game room complete with a ping pong table.
About the property: The Animas river flows along the East side of the property, and the grassy slope behind the house is a good place to put in your rafts, kayaks or canoes. There is a small oxbow pond where deer, elk, and birds congregate at dusk and dawn. Feel free to wander the path cut in the grass—it leads to a small beach at the southern end of the property. The popular Durango to Silverton steam engine runs parallel to the nearby road during daylight hours, a fun sighting for kids and adults alike.
About the area: Durango is an adventurer’s haven at every time of year! Summer is full of river sports, fishing opportunities, hiking and biking, all accessible right out of the front door. Nice place, totally met our needs. Didn't realize property was so close to the road, and road noise was "a thing." River was nice, paths could have been more manicured to allow for walking the property. Also was notified after we booked that owners are on property and construction is taking place as well, no interference, just should be stated up front. Fishing here was fun for casting, but not so much for catching as river was very murky on account of all the rain. No complaints really, close to downtown, and very nice overall.

Our family just returned from our stay at the lovely Animas River house. We loved the property and could not have enjoyed our stay more!

Very nice place to stay - close to town but still away from the business of town. Well stocked kitchen, deck all around to enjoy the scenery and relax. We all loved our stay.
The hostess was very responsive to our needs.
Only improvement I can suggest, is to have some method of marking entrance from road, so night approach can be easier.
would stay there again for our next family get together.

The house is well appointed. We found everything we needed. We appreciate the attention paid to things such as providing firewood at the fire pit.

It was just three of us, but the home could easily fit much more people! There are ample beds, dishes, things to do. The listing is very accurate, plus more wonderful features! There are a few nice fishing spots along the river where, I can almost guarantee, you'll catch Rainbows if you have the right set up! It's so nice, in fact, that it's sometimes hard to get anyone away from the property to do other things. Also... The train does go by the property, and you'll get a good view or video of it right from the back deck.

We loved staying here! The house was the perfect size for 12 of us. We had plenty of sleeping room and room to spread out. The porch is amazing and we spent almost all down time on the porch, looking at the river.
Our highlight was getting to interact with the sweet llamas!

Took kids and grad kids on vacation, nine people. This is one of the best places we have ever stayed. Plenty of room in and it set up perfectly. Fifty yards to the river, animals for the kids to enjoy and a lot of property to explore. Short drive to town for shopping and other activities. Highly recommend this property.

We came to the Animas River House for a team meeting. Being right on the river with plenty of space to have meetings, do work, hang out, and take walks was ideal. The River House is close to some beautiful trails into the surrounding valleys and a very short drive into town. We really enjoyed our time there and would definitely come back.

Wonderful place to stay! Great location in between Durango and Purgatory Ski Resort. Perfect spot for a large family to stay if you are looking to ski or to visit. We had plenty of room and it was perfect for kids. The views of the property were absolutely beautiful! Thank you to the owners for having everything we needed. Highly recommend this property to anyone looking to stay in Durango.

Upon arrival we noticed we never received check in instructions. We had to contact the host to receive these. Thankfully she picked up and emailed the instructions right away. The good. Nice and spacious house with everything needed for our stay. Location a little far from town but beautiful property surrounded by the mountains and on river. The property has the potential to be amazing. The bad. The house is infested with kissing bugs or box elder Beatles. There were about a hundred in the house, all over and especially in the master. This is a problem and made the stay uncomfortable. This needs to be addressed and not mentioning this ahead of time is not right. There was black mold in the upstairs bathroom on the ceiling above the shower. The toilets clogged several times. The washing machine had a sulfur smell when I went to wash clothes on the last day. We reached out to the host the day before checkout with concerns and didn’t receive a response until after checkout. VRBO did not offer compensation either after our complaint. Will not stay here again unless everything was resolved.

House was wonderful and clean. We loved the location especially if you plan on Skiing or going to the hot springs. The host son lives on the property and was geeat to work with. We had snow and he plowed the driveway multiple times to make aure we were safe. The day we left was bad weather they texted us and gave us late check out without asking and even told us we could book another night if necessary. Great house and great host.

Beautiful setting and great location. Accommodated all our needs. Owners are very kind and keep you updated on any issues that may arise (we had a planned power outage, which was no big deal). Huge plus: the neighbors had the cutest puppers <3

Gorgeous setting. Loved the back porch and the outdoor fire pit. We had a large group and the house accommodated us easily. We also prepared a couple of meals and were pleasantly surprised that plates and cooking utensils were in abundance. Highly recommend.

Fantastic house for larger groups. The house was perfect for our group of 8 friends. Easy drive to downtown, golf, mountain biking, and the river access is right out the back door. Daily train passing was fun to see and lots of wildlife around to enjoy.

Great house. Comfortable beds, clean house, & beautiful scenery along the animas river. We would rent again!

We were a group of 11 for the first couple weeks and just two of us the the second half of the stay. Teens enjoyed the trains, river, wildlife, ping pong table in the basement, and the lovely, spacious house. (A bit of US-550 road noise was a necessary trade off for the railroad and river location of the special property.) Gracious and attentive hosts were their when we needed them. Great internet services. Would stay here again.

This is a great property. Very clean. Super view of the Durango/Silverton train. Walking distance to the river. Excellent kitchen. Awesome porches! Summer guests should be aware that the house is not air-conditioned. It was not a problem at all but I did not notice that when I booked the property. The nights were awesome!

If you like the show Yellowstone, you’ll have to stay here. Float down the animas from the bridge 2 miles away and get off on the properties beach.
Simply amazing

House worked out great for our three generation family. We loved the beach area to fish and swim. Also enjoyed the back deck every morning and evening as it cooled down. Rita Jo was great. I was impressed by how well the home was stocked with helpful items - from kitchen to bath to games. A great week for our family!

We had a wonderful stay at the house. It was very clean, had plenty of amenities, and was a great location outside of Durango but only a 10 minute drive to downtown. The property manager was very helpful for any questions we had. Thank you!

Our family of 9 had a great experience at Animas House! The location is perfect because it’s north of Durango and not that far from Purgatory. The house is great for a family reunion because there were plenty of sleeping areas, a master bedroom downstairs for grandma and grandpa, a large kitchen/eating area and wonderful porch right off of the kitchen with another large table and chairs where we hung out most of the time. Rita Jo was a great host and very helpful! We would definitely stay here again!

Our family gathered for a 7 day holiday in Durango. We ranged in age from 12 months to 75 years - 6 adults & 4 children. The house accommodated all of the various age related needs beautifully. It was clean and well equipped. We had all our meals at home. The surrounding property was beautiful and allowed plenty of “play” space for the children. Because of the proximity of the river and the ages of the children (12months, 2 1/2yrs, 4yrs, and 7yrs) constant adult supervision was necessary. The lovely, spacious, and covered porch was a fabulous oasis for all ages. The owners are immediately proximate to the house which was helpful when we had a minor mechanical issue but are otherwise totally nonintrusive. Durango offers activities for all ages and ability levels, though the altitude was an issue for some as we were coming from homes at sea level. The weather was fabulous - a cool welcome respite from the hot Texas & Louisiana weather we were escaping. One note - CO charges 10 cents a bag for a grocery bag (plastic or paper) so bring your own reusable bags or remember to save the bags you have already paid for.

Location was great. Nice views from the decks. Plenty of space for the 6 of us.

Great house, great location, clean, friendly and communicative owner, only thing is that we were confused that one of the rooms identified as a bedroom was an open area with no doors; ended up being totally fine though.

The house was great overall. We were able to comfortably stay here for five days. The house itself was right next to the renters residence, the barn right beside the house, as well as an additional tiny house that someone else was living in, so it was not quite as private as we had hoped for (although no one bothered us at all). The downstairs master bath does not have a bathroom door which bothered my mom but that’s just a preference. We were able to fish quite a bit and caught a couple of trout, but it seems that the time of year wasn’t good for fishing. The location was nice, outside of Durango and on the way to Silverton…we really liked that. The kids loved the ping pong table. Overall, we had a nice vacation. Thank you for the stay.

We had three families with kids, the house fit perfectly.
Location could not have been better....
We skied, we played, we went to Mesa Verde, Telluride and Durango.
Loved seeing the elk in the back yard! Loved seeing the train as well!!

Great house. We were so close to Durango and all the ski areas. Wildlife watching was great along with bird watching if that’s your thing. Great restaurants were really close and part of our group went to the hot springs and spa. This is a fantastic house with all the amenities. Perfect for families and large groups. We had a great time and will return.

We had a great weekend at this property. Location was great- close enough to ski resort and easy access to store, downtown, and hot springs. The house was well-stocked with items like toilet paper, towels, soaps, etc. The beds and bedding were very comfortable!
Overall it was a fantastic place for families with young kids. The kids enjoyed sledding and building snowmen outside and loved sleeping in the loft area.
The only downfall of the property was presence of Elder Box beetles, but we appreciated the owner’s communication and instructions on how to best deal with the bugs.
Thanks for a great ski weekend with family!!

The house is beautiful and the location can't be beat! We stayed over Christmas with the full family - parents, grandparents, college age kids and a toddler. The house was roomy and very comfortable with everything we needed to prepare a great Christmas meal. The host was very helpful and responsive. They even had a Christmas tree up when we arrived! I would highly recommend the Animas River House to anyone looking to be close to Durango and Purgatory!

Both the property and the owners are amazing. The rental process was stress free and easy. Communication was timely. Location is perfect- far enough outside of town to have a herd of elk visit each morning and see and hear the magnificent Narrow Gauge train - and close enough to easily enjoy lovely downtown Durango.

Roomy house that was just right for our party of 11. Very clean and open. Firepit was used each night under the stars. Thinking about a longer stay next time using this house as our base to hiking the surrounding mountains. Wonderful host.

We just returned from our family reunion/vacation and stayed in Durango at the Animas River House. It was the perfect place for our family of 11 to stay. With six adults and five grandchildren, there was plenty of space for everyone. Upstairs had a great playroom/bedroom for the kids and downstairs had a kitchen big enough to cook and sit down to a family dinner. The views from the house were spectactular and the kids really enjoyed the beach at the South end of the property. The big wrap around porch was a big hit with everyone. The kids ran to the one end every time a train came by and the adults really enjoyed the cool breezes and watching the night time skies. Just Wonderful! Rita Jo was the perfect hostess accommodating our every need and/or question. We definitely would like to return to this great place again! Thank you!!

Good: lots of space to spread out, good accommodations with cool features like river access, awesome porch, and view of the train. The owners are really easy to work with! They provide plenty of supplies for the house and they thought of everything. So many extra details like first aid kit, bath bombs, night lights in common areas.
Opportunities: could use a second fridge (possibly placed in the garage) and bigger trash cans for large groups. Also, wear shoes in the yard because there were some thorny vines
Overall this was a fantastic place- close enough to town but had plenty of privacy! The entire family loved it- right down to the soft water!

Beautiful.....
Very pleasant and relaxing place. Best noise in the world is the 4daily steam locomotives, nothing like it in the world.
Thanks for the Visit by the golden eagle, how did you do that.
Great swing, green fields and fire pit next to the river.
EPIC .
