About this house rental
Enjoy indoor-outdoor living in our bright, open home... Relax on the lanai overlooking lush vegetation and lava outcrops, smell the fragrant Hawaiian air and listen to the waves crash in the distance. Secluded and quiet--a garden oasis far from the maddening crowd. Open windows allow for trade-wind ventilation throughout the home. Rainwater-harvest for showers/sinks (triple filtered), spring water for drinking in kitchen.
Our house is just a ten minute walk to the dramatic Puna cliffs and two miles from the trailhead to the only non-black sand beach in Puna, Ha'ena/Shipman. It is a 10 mile unpaved drive (Gov't Beach Rd) to the old Kapoho area and our newest black-sand beach (created since 2018 eruption).
The jungalow is located 16 miles from Hilo airport, four miles makai (toward sea) of HWY 130, five miles to nearest mini-market or 8 miles to Pahoa, and 20 to Volcanos National Park. This is a quiet and secluded area., but it is a jungle out there, so be prepared for wild fowl, coqui, gekkos, some insects and rain. The Jungalow is wide open for natural ventilation and trade winds (no air conditioner). Quiet hours are from dusk to dawn. Owners and 2 cats live on property in a separate unit at the back of the property. Two cars maximum. Ring security camera facing driveway.. 🤙

We enjoyed our stay at the Jungalow. It was very quiet compared to several other places we stayed at closer to Hilo (no dogs barking, no car noise, a lot less coquis, and only 1 rooster.) The lanai was a beautiful place to read a book and sip coffee. The futon area off the second bedroom was larger than it seemed in the pictures, and was a perfect place for kids, teens, or those who wanted to watch TV. The house has lots of light too. Our host was very responsive, when needed.
We loved the cats, but had to be sure to keep the doors closed or they enjoyed visiting inside. The property was well-maintained. Our only issue was there is minimal pots, pans, and cooking utensils, so come prepared. (one pot meals worked the best for us.) We would definitely stay here again.

Steve's VRBO house was located in a quiet neighborhood just a 10 minute walk to the ocean where we watched the sunrise while waves crashed onto black rocks. His house had many cozy spots to relax but we especially enjoyed the porch hammock swings and eating breakfast at the sunny porch table. We also liked the open layout of the kitchen, dining room and living room areas for our family food preparation. The house was well located for our daily adventures including hikes at Volcanoes National Park and along the coast to the north of Hilo. We also liked that we were only a half hour drive from the airport and our favorite park near Hilo: Carlsmith Beach Park where we swam and saw a green sea turtle. Our host Steve communicated well with us and supplied everything we needed to make us feel at home.

Great house for 2 couples with plenty of room. The garden was lovely with lots of birds. You can hear the ocean surf.

Overall this is a great place to stay if you are planning your trip to include hiking and exploring. My family would go out and adventure and then come back to rest and play games. The place was cozy and we loved the extra wildlife noises. The beds were super comfy and our communication with the owner could not have been better. The only problems we came to were some updates in the kitchen, some odd consistency in the decor, and the water heat. However, we made due during our short stay and our visits by Goldie the cat made up for everything.

It was only myself that stayed in the home, but it was wonderful. I love the covered porch, screened in porch, the landscape around the house, and the birds and frogs calling. The house had everything I needed and was in good working order. I did not have to contact Steve about any issues, so I don't have a good idea about how he would respond; however, the fact I didn't have to contact him reflects the quality of care of the property. I was really pleased that he alerted me to the fact that the Kilauea volcano had erupted. I would highly recommend the property.

The home was as described. It was clean, beautifully landscaped, and a nice place to return to after a day of hiking and exploring the area. We enjoyed falling asleep to the chorus of frogs and waking up to the roosters. The resident cats helped fill in the void of missing our own pets. Highly recommended!

Such a comfortable and lovely place to stay amidst flora and fauna! Two highlights for us were early mornings on the porch hammock and the wonderful selection of books and boardgames. Can't wait to come back again someday!

We had a lovely time staying here. The screened in porch was perfect for mosquito free mornings listening to the frogs and chickens greet the day. (Well the frogs run 24/7 but our crew loves their sound. Bring earplugs if you need quiet for sleeping). The kitchen had all the tools we needed to prepare meals. The place uses filtered rainwater and solar heat etc so be prepared for longer waits for hot water. The host had two large jugs of spring water for drinking which tasted lovely. All this was disclosed in the welcome binder at the house which had some great recommendations and clear instruction. The host was extremely responsive and helpful, which we appreciated arriving later than expected in the dark and rain. Mahalo!

Very open space place. So nice hearing the many bird calls that we don’t have. We like cats so it was a treat to have some visit every now and then. Close to Pahoa for groceries or restaurants. Would definitely go back there. 😀

Such a great property to enjoy our stay in Hawaii! Secluded, quiet, and beautiful. We loved the resident cats. Host was easy to get ahold of, very clear instructions on how to check in/check out. My kids had plenty of room to run, play and explore. And I had lots of spots to read and relax! We can’t wait to stay here again!

Will definitely refer to family and friends. Visit island frequently (have grandchildren in Ainaloa); so yes, will be back, if allowed.

I felt like I had a personal paradise of my own, less than 15 minute walk to Maku'u point (where you can sit or walk along the lava rocks to enjoy the water or just jump into some pools where the waves are not coming crashing. The house itself is the second to last house on a dead end street along a gravel path. The house is surrounded by all kinds of trees (Coconuts, guava, palms, plumeria's and various other trees. I loved the rural feel of the neighborhood. The house itself is an older home with many updates in the kitchen and bathrooms. Steve the owner (who lives just a few blocks down and was great to met and talk to and I found him to be responsive, helpful and most of all very genuine. Getting to see various species of birds, chickens and the outdoor house cats were a delight. Sitting on the lanai or the lawn chairs at night listening to the various species of birds singing their songs and the noise of the crashing of the waves was a whole new experience for me. 1. I was prepared with flashlights when coming back from night trips as it's pretty dark due to the abundance of tree's, plus no street lights 2. Keep the sliding door shut in order to not invite any unwanted visitors (pretty green gecko's and some bugs will come if invited). We kept the windows open at all times to let in fresh air (all windows have mesh) so not many bugs indoors. Plenty of convenience stores within a 5 mile radius or take a 25 minute drive only 16 miles to Walmart in Hilo (speed limit is under 45 at times therefore the longer drive time). I loved my experience and I'd do it again to tell you the truth I'm writing this review as we split our vacation from the east side to the west side about 20 miles north of Kona where I'm sitting in a 2 bedroom condo living amongst people (my daughter was already told by the lady downstairs that the walls are thin so just be considerate as her kids have to go to school in the morning) and I'm feeling like a sardine in a can and I'm sitting here typing this review remembering all wonderful gift I had just hours ago (at least I had a week) and will definitely do it again and again at this beautiful place in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Thank you Steve and Desiree for a wonderful experience!

This is a great property with plenty of room. It’s at the end of a short, quiet gravel road with loads of tropical plants, birds and geckos along with several cats and neighbors chickens running around. I felt the kitchen could be better stocked for cooking (one little frying pan meant cooking french toast one at a time for a family of 5 was a much bigger chore than necessary) but that is a minor quibble and we were able to make do with what was there for the most part.
Location was good, although it is a bit off the beaten path and not close to really anything. There is a small public coast access about a 15 minute walk, but it is rocky and rough so really just for looking. It is a decent drive into Hilo and a sizable drive if you want to explore the north coast of the island. Volcanoes National Park is about the same distance, time wise, as from Hilo, as it is a solid 20 minutes off the main beltway road.
Overall, a great place to stay.
