We arrived late at night and were placed in a double queen room even though we booked a King Room. When we got to the room on the 3rd floor we called the front desk and explained the room was not the one we booked, she told us to come downstairs and it would be fixed. However after getting back downstairs with our 1 year old and all of our stuff we were told the room could not be changed back because a manager changed the room. First because of us being two adults and a child, then it was changed based on the price we paid (idk where they got the price from it wasn’t the same as anything we paid). Our room was changed three times without us being notified. First from a King Bed to a King Bed with a couch, then to a double queen room. We were given the option to either cancel the reservation and wait to get our money back or basically just deal with what we had. We were only in town for two days so we didn’t want to cancel, rebook, and wait. Even though there was a king bed room available when we arrived, they couldn’t put us in that room even though it was what we booked and it showed on our reservation. I suggest calling and double checking that you are getting the correct room before arrival or you might be stuck in a room you don’t want or find functional.

It’s a historic hotel with character. It was reminiscent of New Orleans so it has potential, however it’s Selma. The hotel is lovely and quaint. We felt like we were the only ones there. We certainly were the only ones in the dining room. The bed was fabulous and the room was spacious.

This was not a good stay! There was a roach on our bed so they had to change our room. Once leaving the front desk person didn’t acknowledge us and say good morning or ask how our stay was. I’m big on customer service and she definitely needs customer service training. I will be calling corporate

The place is beautiful and clean, the bed was beyond comfortable, and the staff could not have been more helpful. If you’re visiting Selma to see the Edmund Pettis Bridge, this is the place to stay

I enjoyed our stay. I especially liked the old building and the courtyard was amazing.

I love this hotel . The staff is always amazing . The restaurant is delicious. My room had several very dirt spots on the walls and the shower. Tile was missing in the shower and the bottom of the shower was dirty or stained. The hotel was full so there really was no fixing this or changing rooms

A bit worn down, ceiling pieces came down and the carpet wasn’t clean, but the balcony and the view on the bridge were excellent!

Nice clean hotel but we had appreciated a pool in 36 C.

History in the making
Every inch bespeaks the life-altering history of this hotel and its nearby environs, including the famed bridge where the march to freedom broke down barriers and continues to beam hope for a future of union an peace among us all. A spectacularly scenic spot on the river that invites charming birds and offers respite from troubles and toils. The corner unit we had with a giant balcony made for a memory-making stay.

My booked room was unavailable. I called the morning of my stay to confirm my reservation. When I arrived, I was told the hotel was all booked up. It took more than one hour for a room to be found. The registration clerk was not present at the desk for periods of time. If I left the room, I could not use the key card to get back in the room. This room was damp and not fully equipped with a shower curtain, microwave or fridge as the room. This room caused my husband to sneeze constantly and become stuffed up nasally. We were finally moved to a better room at 8 pm that had a microwave, fridge, and nicely appointed sink and separate toilet room with shower. The lighting was poor in the toilet/ shower room. This caused us to miss the start of the event we were in town for that began at 7 pm. The clerk apologized and did give us a discount on the hotel room price. Also, the breakfast which is an additional cost was very disappointing consisting only of a packaged muffin, Greek yogurt with tiny cups of granola and cranberry; and small cup of blueberries with one sliced strawberry.
The listed rating of Excellent (8.2) is not true at all!!

The room was nice, 👍 no hangers in the closet. When we arrived the room wasn’t ready, so we were told it would take about 25 minutes to complete, then we waited about 15 minutes, then someone else arrived and told us that we could’ve had another room instead of waiting. The view from the room was 👍. Since we had the wait, we did ask about a free lunch, was told no. It was still a nice place. 😊

Room was clean and comfortable. Staff was not as friendly or helpful as they could have been.

The hotel is great, a little old and crusty in places, but that is part of its charm. Verandas are nice but need chairs. Parking is a little iffy, but I noticed police checking out the area all the time.

The room was nice but the key machine was broken and we didn’t get a room key until the 2nd night of our stay. We had to be escorted to our room and let in by hotel staff for 2 days. The balcony was littered with food plates and beer bottles.

The card key for the room wasn’t working and wasn’t told until we checked in the front desk clerk had to open the door every time we left and came back to the room so we wasn’t comfortable with that security wise any worker can go in our room we had valuables in there, called Hotel.com and I keep getting the run around they saying since I did “pay at hotel” the hotel is responsible the hotel is saying Hotel.com has to refund me.

Beautiful hotel. Loved the room. View of the river and bridge was lovely. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Would love to visit again.

I could not check-in. The hotel system was down, and they didn't know which rooms were clean. Clean? Aren't ALL rooms supposed to be clean? There were three other couples there for a 6 pm wedding; this happened at 5 pm, and all the staff could do was shrug it off. Other people at the wedding said they didn't have air conditioning, one room had no power, and one had a very leaky AC unit—just a horribly run hotel. The bridesmaid's sister worked there, said they have serious staff issues, people would leave and not return during shifts, quit, fired for theft and other nefarious activities, As nice as it may seem, it should not hold a HIlton branding. Top it off with the surroundings, not safe.

Originally, our room door would not lock. The staff was able to resolve the issue. There is a water leak outside I. The courtyard that needs to be addressed. I room had a mildew spell. I asked for a new room and was told there were no other rooms available. There was no remote control or iron in the room, the carpet was dirty and needs to be replaced. The windows need to be cleaned. The staff at the front desk was very responsive to our concerns. I did share that the stay was not what I expected from the Hilton.

Smoky…could barely walk in the front door to check in due to the smell. There was no soap in the shower dispenser. Asked for late check out and was declined…first time ever as a Hilton member.
On a positive note, the lady who checked us in was pleasant, the bed was comfortable, and the water pressure was good.

There was no lighting in the room other than bedside lamps. The staff was not very friendly. There was no seating in the room other than a desk chair, therefore there was no where for 2 people to sit and watch television or have a snack.

It's a nice property, however they did not have a free buffet style breakfast and no refrigerator in the room.

Our bed spread was clean but stained ...looked kind of sketchy...the nightstand was not clean down the side next to the bed, the floor looked like it was not thoroughly vacuumed....it could have been a LOT cleaner. Old, historic, area could have been nice if it was CLEAN.

The St. James is a lovely historical hotel with a friendly staff. If you stay, reserve a room on the river with a view of the bridge. Be sure to visit the Voting Rights Museum and the park/shop at the base of the bridge. We are so glad we visited the city. We just wish Selma could be revitalized because it deserves that. It’s sad to see that so many beautiful buildings have become run-down.

The staff is horrible! They charged my card for my 2 night stay, but I already paid in full 2 weeks prior via Expedia.com. When I called to dispute the charges, the front desk clerk lied about her name. I learned the truth after I asked to speak with the manager. I still have not received a callback regarding the issue, very disappointed. The staff is very unreliable, responsiveness is less than satisfactory. I will never stay here again.

Beautiful hotel. Front desk associate and housekeeping made us feel welcome. Looking forward to returning when the restaurant has reopened

An old historic building that had been renovated.

Very nice accommodations and renovations captured the elegance of the old Selma I remember when growing up. The staff members were professional, friendly & helpful. It has a beautiful courtyard with relaxing music, ideal for sitting outside and eating breakfast or having a glass of wine in the late afternoon (weather permitting). Very convenient location.

The only issue we had was the fire alarm went off at 1:30am and staff did not know how to disarm it once they determined there was no fire, I totally agree that the fire department should have been called as they were, however guests should have been alerted not to panic in a more timely manner, otherwise the property is nicely maintained and the location is awesome!! Having a functional restaurant on the property would have been amazing as there are few places to choose from otherwise.

The hotel is quite a bit of history. Unfortunately, our room (overlooking the river and the bridge) had a door handle problem to the balcony. They moved us to another room and made it right, so kudos to them. The restaurant & bar were closed for rennovations, but you could still sit in that area and have a beer. Call before you book (through March 2024) to see if they have re-opened the restaurant & bar.

This was an horrible experience. When I got in the room it was too late and I was tired to ask for another room. Also, I clean my own room and use my own towels anyways, whenever I travel to hotels. Their was no cable TV the whole week. I also went without internet for two days, which had me backed up at work, because I am a remote worker. The first thing I noticed when walking into the room was the stale smell. I went into the bathroom, and there were stains and hair on the toilet seat from the last visitor. The shower had hair and also the sink. When I decided to leave a day early to catch up on my work, they would not refund me for the last day. It was either stay in those conditions or leave, and I had to leave. I had to drive almost five hours to office, which I do not work from, just to finish out the week for one day. Then I had to turn around and drive seven hours back home. I lost a lot of money and time dealing with them, when it was their fault. I will never go back their. I have a few pictures and wished I would have taken more, but I had already cleaned the room myself. Hotels.com tried to get me back the refund for the last day, but the hotel refused to cooperate.
