We were disappointed as soon as we arrived at Hotel Europa, walking from the taxi through marijuana smoke to the front door, which was already locked at 7.30pm. On reaching our room we decided to move to another hotel due to the overall musty smell, basic cleanliness & facilities - these fell far short of the description of the room on Hotels.com.
We advised the receptionist of our decision to leave & she was most annoyed. We told her that we understood the hotel's cancellation policy "that any change after 11.59pm the previous day would incur the first night's charge plus fees & taxes". We asked that she cancel the remaining three nights of our four night stay, & refund us the difference, but she refused.
I contacted Hotels.com via chat, however, they were apparently unable to contact the hotel's management & obtain a refund for the remaining three nights. Hotels.com subsequently informed us that there would be no refund.
I replied to the Hotels.com email outlining that our refund request was in line with Hotel Europa's own cancellation policy & requesting a review of our case - I'm still awaiting a response 3 days later.
MOST DISAPPOINTED WITH BOTH HOTEL EUROPA & HOTELS.COM - POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL ROUND!!đâšď¸

Every time I go to Montevideo I stay at Hotel Europa. Friendly staff, very clean and convenient location.
2.0 / 10.0
We chose this as the location was quite centric and convenient for our purpose, and the hotel staff was friendly with a complimentary breakfast, but apart from those points the hotel is in a horrific condition. Our room (2nd floor) was facing the main street was INCREDIBLY noisy due to all day long traffic, separated by just a think window. The hotel corridor lighting has a poor sensor so it's always dark. The amenities placed in the room is under the minimum, with only over-used thin towels and just 2 soap bars, no shampoo or whatsoever. For the price we paid, there were plenty other options that we could've gone (and we will for our next trips to Montevideo).

Nice budget-friendly hotel in Center run by friendly staff. The breakfast is good but it would be great if the hotel considers to add eggs in the breakfast.

The hotel definitely needs some fixing up⌠curtains falling, bed covers stained, shower curtain falling as well, and the breakfast is chaotic and needs some lighter and healthier fare. Staff for the most part nice

Hotel is simple, but has good breakfast, TV channels and is very well located. I also found very smart they have electric outlets from 3 various countries!

You canât find a better value in Centro Montevideo. Quiet and clean. Consistent WiFi. Friendly and helpful reception workers. A nice breakfast buffet. I wish all hotels met this standard.

I went to Montevideo to participate in a congress and chose Hotel Europa due to its location close to the University, shops, restaurants, and touristic attractions (you can walk to most places).. However, during my stay I found out that, besides location, the hotel offers a friendly staff and a very good buffet breakfast for its prize range (though no warm food, I mean no eggs).

Hotel was clean and in overall good condition.Well situated for walking to local museums and shopping.Reception staff not English speaking so communication wasnt great. On arrival our reception staff had the wrong information on our booking which lead to a 45 minute delay in occupying the rooms.Reception staff asked to copy our passports and when they failed to return them within 20 minutes we discovered the passports lying on the public counter where customers were checking out.! We were fortunate to recover them without incident. We asked for a late checkout and were told that 11am was the latest. Our cases had to be left on a trolley in the main reception area until we left the city at 1pm. Not a secure way to look after customers luggage!!!

Met all expectations without really exceeding any. Good city centre location off main commercial street. Not far to walk to old city and plenty of food options nearby. Room was clean, spacious and reasonably warm considering the winter temperature outside. Wi-Fi was good. Breakfast was OK, decent selection available. Although perfectly polite, we didnt find staff particularly helpful with regards to local recommendations and they werent very knowledgeable of transport options out from Montevideo. English not very well spoken but staff had enough to get by with basics.I disliked having to pay for stay in dollars (not my local currency).

We had room with a huge balcony on the 9th floor, excellent value. The room is very comfortable. However, 2 small things bothered us: (1) the room is next the the elevator, so there is some unwanted noise. (2) the water pressure is terrible on the higher floors. But we did have a balcony, so worth the sacrifice.
Excellent breakfast service !!
