An additional kr3,000 for bedding and kr4,000 to park for just a few hours doubled the cost of the stay.

The place is not adequately kept and looks terrible. I got many e-mails insisting on paying in cash and pushing me to pay for parking on the property when parking in the street and the area, as the whole country, is highly safe. She insisted so much that we paid even though we did not use it and left the car in another place.
They also offered a drive to the airport and the driver was nice and courteous.

Nice location with great access to the city center and bus stop number 13. Nice staff and very responsive.

It was ok in cleanliness, nothing bad comes to mind but it was not the cleanest place i have been.

The room was ok, very basic (one pillow? Really?), but at least it was warm. The hostel was very very noisy, lots of partying downstairs, from the owners/managers of the hostel, not the people staying! I got minimal sleep last night. Free wifi was great, location great too. Shower facilities needs a massive makeover, old, grimy, cold.

Had a late arrival and was still greeted no issue. Only had one night and an early morning shuttle so did not have opportunity to follow up on the two issues. Unfortunately never got the key to work in the door and never found a towel to shower in the morning. Did find face cloths so managed a basic cleaning.

The hotel itself is not too bad. What I disliked about this hotel was the staff. The lady who works at the hotel swindled and coerced me into buying a trip to the airport. Because of the way she went about it, I believe she, or the hotel, maybe gets some type of commission or bonus for every trip they help them sell. This lady basically made me believe that this bus was the only option back to the airport. Right away she even “took the trouble” of “helping me” by getting on her laptop and ordering the ticket for me. When she asked me for my card, I of course very reluctantly gave her my card, only because I felt almost forced to believe her and that it would’ve been awkward telling her I wanted to shop around. Later on I found out I could’ve easily gotten on public transportation for less than half the price. I tried to return the ticket, the bus company told me I had to go through the hotel, when I did that, she told me that she had emailed the bus company but couldn’t get them to refund the ticket

Service - The man that helped us was very vice. We accidentally went to the wrong accommodation (we were staying at a different place the day before our tour and at Egilsborg Guesthouse the day after our tour). He was kind enough to drive us to our correct accommodation and was not angry at all about our mistake.
Location - Great. Walkable distance to the city.
Facilities - I have stayed at various places around the world that have had shared bathrooms, including Barcelona, London, Berlin and Reykjavik. This was by far the cleanest, well-lit, well-kept and well-stocked shared bathroom of all the places I have been to, probably even better than some 4-4.5 star hotels.
Overall, fantastic for a short term stay before or after a tour around Iceland :)

Overpriced hostel that booked on an emergency very last minute but they try to charge for everything on the side.

Hotel doesn’t provide correct information about check in.
Staff Proceeded to write a very mean message to us after we simply tried to call to ensure our lastmin booking was still valid (provided incorrect phone numbers on expedia and Checkin details).
If last min booking allowed on Expedia then the Checkin process must reflect this.

It's convenient to the city centre. However, it is not friendly for late check-in.

This place is perfect for a budget traveler or backpacker. The owners, a married couple, were friendly and helpful. I found the room comfortable & warm, about a 10 minute walk from shops & attractions. I would certainly stay here again.

In the city centre, easy access to major attractions, home away from home.

Bad, not equal to the price

Not cosy but good for just a place to sleep...hot water a little problem....friendly people and close to centrum.

Everything wrong with Egilsborg Guesthouse:
1) You will pay up to 10% more than the price announced by this reservation website (the owner will tell you it is additional tax and credit card supplement… this has never happen in any others hotels we stayed in Reykjavik)
2) nobody to welcome you. A key with a piece of paper with your name in the common room
3) rooms that smell humidity
4)Contrary of what it advertised on its OWN website, the kitchen is not accessible (« Once breakfast is over kitchen facilities are available to our guests »… this is not true at all!)
5) forget the pictures, it does not look like this at all
6) the shower has a push button timer that last less than 15 secondes (not a joke). So you have to push the button every 15 secondes… really annoying!
7) owner that put its own music, brush his teeth and argue with employees in the common room during the breakfast time (but forget the breakfast, it was even written on a paper in the common room that tea, coffee and cereals would be available from 8:00 to 10:00am… we did not see anything)
8) blankets are too small for the beds
Morality: don’t stay there at any price! We planned to stay two nights, we left after just one horrible night to the Capital Inn, a really nicer place!

Very comfortable, though basic. A fair walk from the centre but a nice place to get back to after a day out!

decent place, rooms are clean, staff quite helpful, a bit distant from points of interest but overall good stay

We booked Guesthouse Egilsborg at the last minute for a couple of nights in Reykjavik. It is conveniently located in town and has excellent staff. There is an optional breakfast for Ikr 500. The room was clean and tidy with a comfy bed but it was small. We shared bathrooms with other rooms which were also clean and tidy. It was a comfortable place to stay and great to explore Reykjavik!

Expedia needs to review this place. Egilsborg should be listed and priced as a Hostel. Listed as "shared bath": 17 rooms, 50 guests - with THREE (3) Toilets and Two (2) showers. That is not a Guesthouse. We were charged $180 per night for a $50 per night hostel situation.

If you are looking for basic bed, basic sink and basic service and attitude for one night, this guesthouse will cover it. We stayed in guesthouse around the country, and pretty much everyone was much better than this one. It felt like you were staying in the bathroom of a gas station. Not worth the stay.

Well, maybe I am spoiled by hotels in the U.S.A, but this place was kind of shabby. I have never experienced a guesthouse before and there was only one toilet and one shower on each floor. With 6 rooms on the floor, it was a scramble for the facilities. Our room was never serviced in the 5 days we stayed here. Not my idea of nice for the expensive price. This was a last resort for us as everything else in town was full. The lady at the "desk" told us that folks will book rooms up to one year in advance this time of year.

The owner is pretty free style, so the first impression of this hotel was not so good, but actually, because he is so free, then, make you very comfortable to stay there. and besides, he does take care of guests. With this cheap price, I would highly recommend it. Even some people said the breakfirst is too simple, but I love it. why you need so much for just a breakfirst if there are almost everything basic. Just enjoy it and save the money to expose the nature in iceland.

Considering the average price of lodging in Iceland, this was pretty inexpenive. The owner/proprietor was fun and helpful. The rooms aren't luxurious by any means, but fine enough.

Though we had a short stay our host was helpful in directing us on activities to do. We rented a car from him (how super convenient) and spent one day making a different circle around the island.Hotel is simple but clean breakfast simple but ample and internet access was great to have.
