Amazing hotel
Great position
Friendly and helpful staf
3.0 / 10.0
Beautiful , actually exceptionally well designed building and surrounding, the latter being the fact that the hotel is inside the citadel with interesting art galleries, next to the marina and the main city center. However, the stay did not meet our expectations. Despite having booked a room for three person (possible as per the search made) the room was prepared for two persons only, and to get another bed, towels, bath robes, cups etc for the third persons was not easy. Moreover the next morning despite call to the reception and talking to the spa staff, the sauna was not heated up to the requested level. And initially the reception did not recognize the VIP status and I had to specifically ask for it.

Very enjoyable stay. The hotel is ideally located in Cascais with beaches, major attractions and restaurants within 15-20 minute walk. Hotel design is quite unique given it’s in the old castle. Breakfast good with great views over the marina (watch for seagulls wanting your food though!)
As other reviewers have noted, the corridors are long and some of rooms have steps leading to them - not an issue for me, but could be for those with any mobility considerations.
Overall recommend this hotel.

The indoor pool had a film of algae in the drains around the edges. The jacuzzi buttons on the indoor pool did not work (1 out of 4 worked).
The outdoor pool - At one end in the bottom of the pool was an un-capped drain hole which if you stepped on it was painful.
The decking around the outdoor pool was in poor repair.
On one side of the pool was a small hole which had such high suction that it could trap fingers or worse, injure a child. As an adult it was hard to remove my hand from this suction hole. this was just below the water level.
Other than the dangerous state of the outdoor pool, the hotel was great and the staff were brilliant.

Was very convenient location. Pool was very small for a large hotel, hair dryer too hot.

When I booked I chose a room with a balcony and that was not what I got. It was relatively clean and the breakfast was good.

Overall the hotel is ok but definitely not 5*. The communal areas are pretty shabby, as are some aspects of the room, and there is very little atmosphere. We also had to ask for our coffee pods to be refreshed every day. On the plus side the location is great, the building is historically interesting and the staff were friendly.

Great location and great staff. Poorly maintained. Very small pool which is not clean. No towels at the pool until1130! Room and bathroom need refurbishment now. AC very noisy. Breakfast is very limited and definitely not 5-star. Parking is 20 euros per day which is ok for the location. I have been coming to Cascais for several years but will avoid it going forward. Overcrowded and overpriced. There are so many better alternatives.

Only spent 1 night, but wish it was two! Great location and views.

Did not receive vip gift, service was poor, long wait for coffee and breakfast. Poor signs to where things were. Room cleaned but no towels left had to ask for towels. Told later! Not a 5 star accommodation

Excellent hotel all round. Staff always cheerful and helpful. Quirky hotel within a castle. Short walk to town.

the staff at this hotel were exceptional. My son left his mobile phone in the back of an Uber on the way out on Saturday evening and the staff (Sara and the main manager) were very helpful in tracking down the Uber driver and securing his phone back. i cannot fault the staff. Very accommodating and helpful.

Amazing stay. Love artwork throughout hotel and grounds. Such an unusual location inside a fortress. Great breakfast.

Great hotel close to Downtown and the marina .
8.0 / 10.0
This is an amazing property built within a fortress and palace of the late King of Portugal. The rooms, facing a beautiful view of the water, look onto a marina with shops and restaurants. During the evening DJ music can be heard from the marina up to 2 am which can affect sleeping conditions. There are two very nice pools which added a lot of value to my experience. The outdoor pool is a bit of walk up some stairs but the ocean and grassy area around the pool is very nice. Unfortunately, there was no pool services outdoors where used towels and dishware sat. It was hard to find a clean towel.
As a five star property , I expected the bed comfort to match the rating. Unfortunately, it did not. The mattress was soft and bouncy and needed replacement. My back hurt getting up every morning and that affected my overall experience.
The hotel provides a wide array of food for breakfast including fresh squeezed juices, made to order coffee drinks, pastries , breads, meats, cheeses, vegetables and made to order eggs and omelettes. As a gluten free eater, there was no pastries to choose from and the small amount of bread they provided was packaged in plastic and not very good.
I really enjoyed the location being close to town but away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy town of Cascais. There is a very nice walking and biking path from the hotel that overlooks the ocean. The art district that surrounds the hotel adds a lot of value and interest to the property.

The calm spaces within the hotel, the friendly staff and the whole art atmosphere. I like the breakfast on the terrace overlooking the marina and also the outside pool.

Both pools very nice
Though access to outdoor pool quite a walk

Overall good location. We had a room with the window to the Marina. Time by time the music was little bit loud so that you could here it in the room. Not a big problem but in case of a five star you would expect more comfort.

No empathy shown at the reception. Workers were more i terested in ticking the boxes rather than understanding the situation .
Surprisingly no/little recycling

40 minute commuter train ride to Lisbon. Great option if you want to stay in a quieter place than Lisbon. Hotel is in an old citadel. Short walk to Cascais and dining.

Location plus amenities make this a perfect choice. Clean and safe. Plenty dining options inside the hotel and many more in the surrounding. Hotel breakfast buffet is amazing!

Excellent hotel in the museum quarter. All the best sights are within easy walking distance. Don’t miss the Palácio de Cidadela in the square, but tours are limited so you need to book. The hotel gave us a 24 hour museum voucher with access to 13 places, which included the Palácio. This will save you quite a lot of money, although you’ll need to prioritise! The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Everything was delightfully well-run in an understated way. Super comfy beds, cleanliness impeccable and the best breakfasts in the dining room overlooking the marina! Very relaxing, we loved every minute.

Best location in Cascais with views of the marina. Bed was very comfy and the room had everything we needed. The hotel layout is strange but that is due to the restrictions of the fort walls - it was a long walk to breakfast! But breakfast was good compared to other hotel breakfasts I’ve had in Portugal.

Generally the stay was fine, great location, nice surroundings and fantastic breakfast.
What was not so great was the red stained quilt (pictured) which apparently was OK for the hotel as nothing happened despite saying it directly to the receptionist. And as nothing happened I also sent a mail with no response at all.

My partner and I stayed 3 nights here as a base to visit Sintra. Overall we had a really pleasant stay. The property is built inside of an old fort and the different areas of the hotel are from various eras of construction - there is a small color coded map in the lobby that explains all of this. Honestly I think they downplay the history of the site and buildings, which is a bit of a shame. I would have loved if more info had been included in the room and around the property to explain some of the history.
Most things you could want in Cascais are a short walk away and the galleries around the hotel courtyard were nice to visit. The breakfast buffet has a good selection to appeal to just about everyone but can be a little chaotic depending on the day and time. The pool is small and a bit of a challenge to find. Overall the signage around the property is a little lacking - it wasn't uncommon to see people getting lost trying to find their rooms.

The setting was like a dream; the dovetailing of very old and very new was seamless; service was top-notch; breakfast was a wonderful way to start the day--every day.

Make sure you always use the safe in your room. We had two cards scammed from the room with no great response from hotel. It is a hotel in a great location

Loved every moment, from driving under the archway into the courtyard; the setting of this hotel is phenomenal. The staff were so kind and giving. I loved everything about my stay at Pestana Cidadela Cascais. I'll be back.

Great accommodations! And espectacular setting!
2.0 / 10.0
The room had ants in it. The hot food was cold. The room should have been described as a down-floor room with people walking past which meant the curtain had to be closed all the time.
8.0 / 10.0
The setting of the property in the old fort is absolutely beautiful. There sre wonderful sculptures and slightly crazy artwork wherever you look.
6.0 / 10.0
While the hotel is in a beautiful, historic location, with a great outdoor pool, I am rating it on the basis of it (and its price point) being 5 stars.
The pros:
- location
- outdoor pool
- rooms were clean and comfortable
- pool staff were great (as were breakfast servers)
- breakfast was decent - apart from when the couple next to us proceeded to take 10 hard boiled eggs and eat them with all the grace of the Cookie Monster (not the hotels fault I know. Was just something I wanted to share). Good job I didn't want a hard boiled egg that morning
The cons:
- never got a call to say our room was ready (picky and we understand they are busy, but still, it's easy)
- rooms were really, really weirdly designed:
---the doors to the patio opened from the middle, and the wrong way, like they had been put on back to front (not a big deal, we just looked in a mirror to open them)
---limited space in the bathroom - seriously, I kept accidentally phoning the front desk with the bathroom phone every time I wanted a wipe (i.e. zero space)
---no extraction fan
---no iron (do I care if I am a little wrinkled? No. Does my wife...! Seems a basic necessity.
Again - this is all on the basis of it being 5-star, it's not fussiness or unreasonable expectations on our part. I've stayed in 1 star to 5 star places and unfortunately this is closer to 3.5. Finally - the bars were non-existent. The reception bar closed at 7pm and resembled a co-working space, or funeral waiting room. Upstairs, empty!

Really enjoyed our stay

The weather was good, the hotel ideally located and peaceful, the room was hit and miss with the cleaning and towel changes and some days didn't get done until the evening. We had a lovely holiday and I would recommend the hotel and Cascais.
