The Matrine Inn is a pretty amazing bed and breakfast -- with an actual breakfast! The rooms are gorgeous and you are right across the street from Monterey Bay and just minutes from downtown.
But this is for a very specific type of traveler, so there are few things missing that can be a little inconvenient for some. There is no television in the room I stayed in, no microwave, no mini-fridge - so if you need these types of amenities, plan ahead.
They do have wifi and it worked fairly well. There are also great public areas where you can play chess, ping pong, or pool, and a gorgeous semi-outdoor space.

I think we found our new favorite hotel in Monterey. This beautiful inn may not be as glamorous on the outside as the nearby grand Victorians. However it has the antique charm of a hotel built in the 1800s (and is about half the price of their neighbors).
We were greeted by friendly staff and personally escorted to our room at check in. A variety of teas, coffee, and water awaited us at our arrival and were available in the lobby throughout the day.
The next morning, we were invited to breakfast in their dining area where we were served a full meal and offered multiple options to choose from. Again, the staff were amazingly friendly.
Guests can sit and relax in multiple viewing areas and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the coastal shores. The hotel is also located right on the beach so guests can take a romantic stroll without having to drive anywhere. If you do want to head to Cannery Row, it’s maybe a five minute drive.

Absolute gem, lovely staff, beautiful room, lovely location - no tv in room - perfect stay 😃😃⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved everything! It would have been nice to have a TV in the room but other than that no complaints.

Very good breakfast.
Employees were so nice.

Old bathroom, shower was retro fitted and outside bathroom, musty odor, bad plumbing, toilet barely flushed, sink barely drained

They did a great job making us feel comfortable. Rooms are decorated with wonderful antiques that made the experience very cozy. The breakfast was great plus the fantastic view. The coffee was good as well. All in all great experience at a small turn of the century b&b

First off, the Expedia site says they have refrigerators in the room. They do not. Second, Expedia site tells you will get a certain room - for example with a ocean view, but when you arrive that is not the case. I liked my room, it was no soundproof as the site says, especially from below the room. It’s in a great location, right on the ocean and great walks can be had in both directions. Breakfast was good, and staff is nice. However, It’s a bit awkward to have to wait till 8am to get coffee or hot water for the room. Overall, a good experience, sort of nice to stay in an older Inn with no amenities — Wi-Fi was pretty good though. Furniture, drapes, windows, were nice — lots of space, so in ways better than most newer hotel rooms. Of course, there are repairs needed but it gives you a feel for the history of the area. Ocean view rooms are more expensive and probably worth the price. Breakfast room has that great view but my room was in the back and mostly quiet.

Unique bnb. Beautiful views. Liked the private sitting areas overlooking ocean. Bed was comfy. Breakfast good. Staff accommodating.

Only view was of the seagull poop rooftops of the neighboring properties. The sofa was shredded. We spent the day in San Francisco and when we weren't quite finished I got out the hotel paperwork to find we needed to arrive by 8PM or reservation would be cancelled. So we didn't have time to stop for dinner. We rummaged around our van for snacks. Luckily the breakfast was good.

The staff and breakfast were excellent. The room we stayed in was small and had too much furniture for its size. The outside area was somewhat run down - there were gardeners doing their best to get things cleaned up. The location and views to the north (if you have a room that faces north) are spectacular - very close to Lover's Point and the coastal walkway.

Amazing. I loved it all. Beautiful property. Every little accent brings a bit of life to it. Unique. Charming. Full service breakfast is lovely. Highly recommend.

Unbeatable location and charm

Our room, the Mahogany room, had run-down hair dryer, heater, and cooling fan, a freezing-cold bathroom, and a generally shabby appearance. Its and its neighboring rooms’ exterior environment also seemed neglected by comparison with the interior rooms. Looked like not a lot of effort was put into the place compared with other B & Bs.

Customer Services is above excellent but the room has no Refrigerator, Microwave, Television , AC and Table to eat also if you’re 6 footer the shower head is too small and tight. Breakfast is a Champion with a nice view facing the ocean

This place was absolutely beautiful! It was clean and very pleasant. The staff was informative and very nice. I will be back to this location next time we visit the area. I highly recommended the stay here

If your mind set is Victorian era then this is the place. Lots of older furniture and history through out this property.
It does smell old if that makes sense :)

Impressed on every level - we worked up to the smell of freshly baked pastry and bacon or sausage and then had one of the most relaxing and elegant breakfasts I’ve had in a while. The Art Deco room had the coolest touches, I can’t wait to stay in a different room next time to keep seeing the character in each. 100% will stay here again.

Overall somewhat disappointed in the property. Location was good for the monterey Bay Aquarium which was the primary purpose of our trip but other then that not very walkable to restaurants, tide pooling options or the wharf . Staff was not particularly friendly when we had questions and the check in process was rather awkward. You have to ring a doorbell and wait for someone to answer and let you in. Parking was great once you figured out where it was located on Ocean View below the property). Breakfast was limited but tasty and coffee was not available until 8:00 when breakfast service started which is inconvenient if you’re an early riser. Would probably opt to stay at a airb and b on a future trip .

I really enjoyed my stay at the Martine Inn. The property itself was a taste of the past, and the rooms were eccentric. The staff were incredibly friendly. The hotel was situated right next to the sea, which made for lovely views. There was a breakfast bar included in the stay which was so-so. Some aspects of the rooms could benefit from modernization but I understand the intent to preserve the past. The beds were slightly uncomfortable but very clean and fairly large. Overall would recommend for a 1 night stay.

The inn retains the old character of the property. The location is excellent. We enjoyed the pool table and ping pong table too.

This hotel is lovely. Period furniture and antiques and rooms. Bed was comfortable. We had full ocean view and it was worth the extra $$. Customer service was excellent. Don't stay at this inn expecting to watch the latest movie or chill watching tv as there is no tv in the room... We certainly did not miss it and just enjoyed quiet evenings reading after dark. Great location and parking. Breakfast was served elegantly but the food was average. Overall, a nice stay.

The best place I've ever stayed. I have stayed there about 5 times in all. Stayed in many of the rooms and they are all wonderful. The staff is fantastic. Feels like home. The food is beyond delicious. My partner and I plan on returning next year. We go every year for our joint birthdays. Its the best relaxing and rejuvenating vacation. We would live there if we could.

Charming hotel, full of authentic furnishings. The Walnut Room, where we stayed, opens onto a lovely courtyard with a fountain and koi pond. Hors d'oeuvre plate in the evening and a fabulous cooked to order breakfast are highlights. The property is showing its age a bit and the room was a bit cramped for two, but this is a unique experience that shouldn’t be missed.

The Martine Inn oozes with charm from every inch of the property. The location is perfect right on the water. The house itself is gorgeous and well run. Our Early American suite was well decorated, comfortable, and I loved the clawfoot tub in the bathroom. The staff are attentive but not intrusive. The food is also delicious. I will definitely come back when I return to Monterey/Pacific Grove.

Yuli was super friendly and helpful. Beautiful views!

An old property. The best part of this place is the location. The ocean is right across the street. If it wasn’t for that the place would be very overpriced. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.

What a delightful place to stay. I felt spoiled with wine and hors d'oeuvres when we first got there. The representative that showed us around was so nice. We ended the stay with this delicious breakfast on fancy silver and China settings. The views from the Inn was breathtaking. So much fun and will definitely go back soon.

Love the place and have stayed before, but it has gone downhill over the years.

In town for a friends birthday. Driven by location many times thought we’d try. If you don’t get one of the 8 spots in front you have to find a spot on the street. Host super friendly gave us a tour. Room was quaint with a great view and quiet. Breakfast was yummy and old school served on silver platter. They have a afternoon happy hour wine and eat room gets a plate of cheese salami. The place is dated could use some TLC .
