HOSHINOYA met our high expectations - but many of the notes from other reviewers rang true. Overall we really enjoyed it and would recommend.
1. We stayed 3 nights. Even if you have the budget, wouldn't recommend staying much longer than that as some of the rituals get a bit tired after a couple days (such as taking off shoes when entering).
2. Room is overall nice but not super spacious and ours smelled a bit funky. Shower is good but not incredible. Bed is good.
3. Common area is nice and the snacks and drinks available were great.
4. Welcome/arrive felt high service and exclusive.
5. Onsen is nice and unique but would have liked to have a steam room or other facilities as well
6. We did the sake tasting and enjoyed it - would recommend.
7. Location is good and we did a lot on foot our first 2 days. Great to be near Ginza and train station.
8. Expected a bit more from a service perspective but it met our needs. For example - no turn down service, front desk a bit slow to respond to inquiries.

Property was difficult to locate in the business district. Checking in was quick and easy. Those with tattoos are able to use the hot spring. When we arrived, there were four other females who were leaving. We had the place to ourselves. The open air ceiling was breathless. The common area had drinks, small rice cracker snacks, and single wrapped ice cream balls similar to small bon bons. Checkout was quick. Charged for hot springs usage for all in our party and a service fee. I knew about the fee from another review so I wasn’t shocked when it was approximately half the price of our room.

Great location
Close to Tokyo station
Wonderful staff and service

Hoshinoya Tokyo is a unique hotel, with tatami and wooden flooring throughout. The rooms have an elegant decor with a modern touch (TV hidden behind a mirror, multiple room dimming settings). The communal lounges on each floor, as well as the public bath on the top floor, along with cultural amenities (musical performances on the weekends) all make up a unique experience that you won't find at other hotels.
4.7
The quality of service, attention to detail and ethereal ambience makes this a truly special respite from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.

vere relaxed. staffs are kind. smoking zone very thoughtful. restaurant was great. Onsen was great. morning served Onigiri was excellent. when enter the gate. very beautiful Ikebana you will see.
4.7
Modern and traditional hotel with great customer service. An excellent choice for families or for those just looking for some peace in Tokyo. The onsen was a special treat & my family thoroughly enjoyed. Walking distance to Tokyo station and very close to Otemachi Station. Would definitely stay here again.

The staff and service are amazing and the Onsen is very clean, peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommended.
4.7
Stunning and engaging architecture. This place is not for everyone - for example, those who like typical gaudy Western style five star hotels with luxe golden fixtures etc. Also, the beds are traditional Japanese - so futon on the floor. We loved it! Service was impeccable and lovely.

One of the best hotels I've ever stayed at. Thank you

Absolutely gorgeous hotel. Amazing staff as well. Rooms were spacious and beautiful. Lovely tea and snacks included as well. We used the Osen, gym nearby (extra change), hand the traditional dinner and breakfast in our room and toured around Tokyo. The hotel is located in the financial district which was a little too quiet on the weekends and none of the underground restaurants were open. Other than that, our experience was perfect. Would definitely recommend.

Very pleasant stay and unique experience!

Truly the most beautiful oasis hotel. Extraordinary service and beauty. Incredibly private. Almost no interaction with other guests. The most luxurious ryokan possible. The onsen on the roof is magic. Highly recommend for a calm peaceful relaxing place to spend a few days upon arrival with jet lag. Would love to return.

The hotel is incredible, the facilities are mind blowing. Everything about the hotel is exceptional. The Onsen is an incredible experience to have. The spa was the best I've ever been to.
The only two complaints I have are the breakfast option was very expensive and it wasn't as tasty as all the other food I had in Tokyo.
Additionally I wanted to invite a few of my friends to checkout the room while I changed for us to go out. The hotel gave me a very hard time stating that hotel policy doesn't allow guests, which is absurd. I'm staying at a hotel alone, if I want to invite someone to visit me, it's my own prerogative to do so.

We loved staying at HOSHINOYA Tokyo. The property is truly a ryokan in the city that creates a quiet and peaceful environment. The natural onsen on the 17th floor makes the property very unique within Tokyo and we used it everyday. The staff were all very helpful and kind throughout our stay. We also had to cancel very short notice and they worked with us to reschedule even though we were outside their cancellation window; we really appreciated their willingness to accommodate us in a unique circumstance.

The most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in! Love the hot springs and the japanese breakfast. The staff was wonderful!

1st day we arrived was good with staff.
2nd day - Breakfast : Staff did not explained about food and food was not warm, it was cold. We need a water so i called staff but they did not answer so i went out of room and looking for staff.
3rd day (check out at 11:30) - when i went to reception to check out, staff did not say hello and did not asking any question like " how was stay in Hoshinoya?", they just gave to me paper to pay bill. I felt so upset about staff. I have been many Aman resort,Hyatt,Hilton,W hotel, Ritz carton and so on around world. Their staff so kind but Hoshinoya Staff are so terrible in reception. My daughter asked some drink when we check out, but staff laught and reject to give some drink. I felt so much terrible and very upset. I felt they ignore me. I did decide not use Hoshinoya hotel anymore in my life and tell my experience to my people.
How staff say "No" when we ask some drinks when we check out? Is this your hotel's customer service rule?
We spend about 1500yen per night, but service your your hotel less than 300yen per night's hotel.
Thank you so much Hoshinoya's terrible customer service and I'll never forget the feeling of being ignored.
for the rest of my life.

Traditional and wonderful ryokan

Incredible onsen. Full stop. #1 reason to stay here. In such a dense city, this is a true luxury to have a tranquil rooftop onsen with indoor and outdoor areas.
The design of the hotel, the arrival and check in experience, staff, service, are all top notch as well. Location is very convenient for seeing Ginza and Asakusa areas of Tokyo, as well as the Imperial Palace and gardens.

The Hoshinoya is the perfect city escape. It’s a 2 mile n walk from the subway and has a fantastic traditional style Japanese hot spring on the top floor, which is honestly why we always choose it. The staff go above and beyond every time and will ensure that your stay is memorable. If you’re looking for a luxury experience that combines the traditional elements of a Japanese ryokan, this is it!!!

Beautiful Hotel. Elegant and unique.

A superb resorts! We enjoy it very much.

Room looked beautiful but the bed was super uncomfortable.
Staff at hoshinoya are rigid and not very accommodating. I had an evening flight so I checked out of the hotel and visited Tokyo as my final day. When I returned, I asked to use the communal shower at the hotel prior to travelling to the airport. I was told No. As this hotel is very expensive per night, I was surprised they didnot let me use the shower area. I haven’t had this experience anywhere else in a 5 star property.
4.7
absolutely this was an amazing stay! an oasis in the middle of a big city. rooms were so comfortable. staff was beyond accommodating. highly recommend!
4.7
A very successful fusion of a Ryokan and a western style hotel. You are always surrounded by an understated elegance that is subtle and quiet. The architecture of the building and the interior design is exceptional. The hotel could benefit from the addition of a casual restaurant.
4.7
Beautiful Japanese style hotel with excellent amenities and attentive professional staff. Located close to transport options on a quiet side street in financial district. This is not a western style hotel but there are plenty of those from which to choose. Highly recommended.
4.7
This was a slightly strange experience. The property is very traditional and has some odd quirks (like taking off your shoes on entry and leaving it at the entrance). The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly but the overall feel of the hotel is dark and quite compressed. We also found the rooms to be too dark, making it hard to iron a shirt or put on makeup. The noise from the air con made it hard to sleep and the beds weren't particularly comfortable. There is a lot of focus on being eco-friendly so missing some of those key comforts you would expect at a 5 star property.

Perfect in every way.
4.7
Very strong cultural experience
4.7
The finest hotel in which I have had the pleasure of staying. Extraordinary service and facilities.
4.7
Beautiful hotel with large rooms, only 6 rooms per floor. Great modern Japanese design including 8 push button light settings. Hotel provides lounge wear & kimonos which can be worn to Onsen (hot baths) for indoor/outdoor bathing. Having a natural onsen is quite rare in Tokyo. Guests are expected to remove shoes upon enter which are stored at the entrance. Located close to subway (which includes many food options) accessed through lower lobby. Staff very polite and responsive to every request. Definitely recommend this hotel.
4.7
Absolutely relaxing atmosphere, excellent service. Conveniently located to restaurants, transport and the Imperial Palace. Would recommend to anyone.

A serene, stunning, exceptional experience!
Every aspect of our stay was outstanding!

Exceptional place to stay!

I was truly excited about the immersive experience this hotel promised, but unfortunately, they missed the mark entirely.
Firstly, it was clear that the hotel was more focused on making a quick profit. They charged us a whopping $60 for just one hour of late check-out, despite our prior communication. This lack of flexibility was unexpected from what was supposed to be a five-star establishment.
Additionally, we lost one of the two keys they provided, a simple mistake that usually doesn't lead to such consequences. However, the hotel charged us another $60 for the missing key and treated it as if we had intentionally hidden it, which was rather frustrating.
The quality of the towels was disappointing, feeling cheaper than what you'd find in a typical three-star hotel. We had the opportunity to stay in two other five-star hotels in Japan during our trip, and the difference in quality was like night and day.
While the bed was comfortable, the sheets were of poor quality, something I wouldn't expect in a five-star hotel.
The only redeeming aspects were the stylish decor blending modern amenities and traditional Japanese design/experiences and the pleasantness of the staff (excluding the front desk). However, these positives don't justify the overall bad experience we had during our stay.
4.7
Everything is a perfect 10 for me at the Hotel. I'm considering a return in winter. My kids love the activities in Hoshinoya Tokyo.
One slight improvement that the hotel can make is to keep the onsen shower area clean every two hours, as some of the hotel customers might not have proper manners inside the onsen.
4.7
Great place to relax and unwind.
4.7
Nice for a night or two. Very quiet and zen. But I wouldn’t stay longer
4.7
The best experience in Tokyo
4.7
The best hotel we’ve ever stayed at. Absolutely stunning design, incredibly gracious staff, outstanding onsen and food. This was a beautiful and restorative stay.
