Staff were very accommodating and kind. There was a major train delay that got us in very late and the staff was understanding. Everything was clean and the rooms were very spacious. The hotel was located conveniently from the train station to the different sightseeing areas - all in comfortably walkable distance. We would definitely stay here again - highly recommend.

Staff were amazing and the lounge with tea making options was lovely.

One of the best hotels I’ve been at. Beautiful room and lobby, friendly stuff and such clean , large, new, pampered and comfortable room. I wish they had more vacancy so i could stay longer…

The best hotel I’ve ever stayed at in Japan. It’s conveniently located between the train station and the old town. Staff was super accommodating, welcoming and helpful. Great meal area, breakfast is great (western style), laundry, Onsen, spacious room. Very high quality, wish we could have stayed longer!

I was a little disappointed with this hotel after reading very positive reviews. The decor felt a little dated and in need of a refresh, lots of black walls which made it feel dingy, and I could only open the window in my room by 1cm. Didn’t see anyone else in the hotel at the same time as us, so it lacked atmosphere - only other sound was the music playing in reception. For cheaper prices, other hotels which I had considered booking were in a much nicer area (in the old town), and had onsen which could be used free of charge - walked past whilst walking round the nice areas of Takayama and regretted my decision. The onsen required a payment of 2000 yen per person which I had not realised. Overall disappointed for the price, compared to many other hotels we stayed on our 3 week trip in Japan (many for a cheaper price) this had less facilities, a less appealing location, and no nice touches such as welcome drink, bottles of water in the room.

Nice small hotel with a unique local atmosphere, great service and lovely breakfast

I loved this hotel the staff were amazing the room was a good size and the air-conditioning worked great . The only negative I would say is they only have western breakfast i would have loved the option of a japanese breakfast

We had an excellent stay at the MACHIYA hotel in Takagawa and would recommend again. The staff were super helpful, from recommending great places to eat to serving cookies and drinks after a long day of sightseeing. The location was also extremely convenient and easy walking distance from Takayama Station (10 min), morning market (10 min), historic district (5 min) and Hida open air museum town (20 min). It’s on a quiet street and has a modern, hip feel with jazz music and coffee/tea in the lobby area. We reserved the onsen in the evening and enjoyed a wonderful drink (sake, wine, beer, juice) with the onsen experience. The homemade breakfast was also quite delicious and filling.

Super nice hotel!! The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. They also have a nice bath to rent out for 2000yen/person. It was all so perfect!

Lovely hotel, great location, everything we needed, super friendly staff and a bonus of free tea and coffee in the common area which was a lovely touch. I would definitely recommend

Great hosts. Very helpful. Great room for four.

Top notch stay!!!

Up scale and modern townhouse. Blends perfectly in the surroundings but offers modern comfort and all you need for your extended family stay. From the luxurious bath to drip coffee bags and a washing Maschine you are set to enjoy the city.

Small charming boutique hotel. Much nicer than the bigger more generic hotels in the area. Rooms are tight but the staff were helpful and polite. Coffee was great. Maybe afternoon dessert (simple cookies or similar) would have made a nice addition. Overall, very nice stay.

The hotel was closed to the Takayama Old Town and train station only 10 minute walk. Breakfast was great; it was not a buffet which is better. The room was spacious. They offered 24/7 coffee and tea there is an espresso machine at the lobby. We really enjoy espresso 3 times a day. We highly recommended this hotel to anyone. We would love to come to visit again.

Beware of Room 202
We were pleased to leave this hotel after three nights of broken sleep. The air conditioning units for the front building are below the external wall of Room 202 (twin, futon beds) and the noise of these units reverberates through the futon/pillow all night long.
The friendly hotel staff were apologetic but well aware of the issue. We were unable to shift rooms as the hotel was fully booked. This would have been fantastic hotel to stay at otherwise.
Do not recommend this hotel.

Beautiful, nice rooms and staff.

Beautiful, comfortable property in a great location. We loved that it allowed us to combine the flexibility of a hotel with the charm of staying in a more traditional property with tatami rooms. Breakfast consisted of a panini or croissant, salad and smoothie, and was delicious both days even if it didn't offer any choice. Coffee and tea available all day, and the locally sourced green tea was amazing. The friendly, helpful staff helped us forward our luggage to our next location.

Property and amenities felt very sleek and comfortable. Service was also immaculate

This is a wonderful small boutique hotel w everything you need. A very good light breakfast included w excellent espresso coffee machine 24 hrs a day. Super comfortable beds and pillows. Washing machine and dryers for guests to use. But best of all the nicest staff you’ll find. Always smiling & ready to help. Thank you MACHIYA for a great rest in Takayama.

Amazing!! It was such a treat to stay here! Love the sleek aesthetic. Especially loved the complimentary Japanese tea bar!♥️
The bathroom gets cold during winter, so I recommend leaving the door open so the heat can seep in! Beautiful place, wonderful and welcoming staff

Everything is prefect , we will come back for sure and would love to recommend to everyone.

This stay exceeded our expectations. From the walkability of this location to the comfortable beds, we enjoyed everything. Their baths and shared dining areas were a huge plus—their tea selection was much appreciated after a long day hiking.

Fantastic hotel reminiscent of a modern ryokan. Delicious breakfast. Cool lounge with dining tables for takeaways, Japanese teapots and cups for Japanese tea. Walking distance to train and bus station, and to old quarters, Great staff.

Absolutely beautiful and charming. One of our favourite accommodations in Japan. Hopefully we can stay here again one day.

Nice little hotel away from the busy tourist area. Beds are on a low plinth and are difficult to get in and out of - otherwise they are comfortable.
Well appointed bathrooms with a powerful shower.

This hotel had the friendliest and most helpful staff. The lobby/dining area has a water cooler as well as free tea and coffee and plays peaceful music. Our room was very ambient and comfortable and we enjoyed one of the two private baths😊

Nice modern hotel with a traditional vibe. Great service. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The common area was great for breakfast or just to have a drink. Getting to sample the different local teas was nice. The rooms were nice, beds comfortable and had all the amenities. Great hotel. I highly recommend it.

Absolutely loved this property….I do not understand how it’s rated 2.5 star!!! It’s a very good 3 star. The staff were a pleasure, the facilities very nice and modern. Rooms comfortable and well appointed. Within walking distance of the old town and a short walk to the station. Loved it!

The property was great for our quick trip to Takayama. We booked the quad room with garden terrace/view. It was beautiful. In addition, the staff was exceptionally helpful, providing insight on restaurants and sites.

Great, modern accommodation, with lovely bedroom and finishing touches, right in the middle of Takayama township

When booking I thought over $200 a night was a bit high, but I loved the look of the rooms and hotel and location. When we got there our room was on the 2nd floor, so you must carry it up and down the stairs (though the staff does that for you) We are early risers and finding anything open before 10am is near impossible, even coffee shops, so we took advantage of the espresso machine and the tea bar they had available for the guests in the lobby! Take out cups, in room cups and reusable cups. They also had a water machine, so we refilled our water bottles everyday.
Most of the eateries close between 230-5pm, and bars tend to not open until 5pm or later. We are definitely afternoon pau hana drinkers, so after walking around all day and then not finding a place to sit and drink, they offer beer and sake options for sale in the lobby. The prices were only 100yen more than what we saw around town. So cocktail hour was a daily occurrence in the lobby, which gave us time to get to know Mr Makino better! He was so helpful with sharing his favorite sake, so we didnt have to visit every sake shop and try all the sakes, and he helped us by phoning in a dinner reservation for us.
Machiya Hotel also has a laundry room. The washer cost 400yen and the dryer was free. I brought laundry sheets but they actually had laundry soap there for guest to use! All the staff were so professional and polite. I would definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to visiting other Machiya H

It’s situated just minutes from Takayama train station and minutes of walking to the old town. Very convenient. There’s no elevator for second floor stay so besr in mind if you have large luggages. A little disappointment when booked with free breakfast but was told not available during our stay. But overall a happy stay here.
