BEWARE FRAUD/DANGER: We are accustomed to booking smaller traditional hotels while in Europe. But we'd never had an experience like with the Altan. The room we had booked was for three people, advertised as bright, with a picture of three beds, in a normal looking hotel room. What we got was totally uninhabitable. It was located in the attic of the building (fourth floor) and was substancially smaller than depicted (the room fit only the two beds, with no other space). The worst part was the sloped ceilings (like in a loft) that were so pitched that you couldn't sit at the foot of either bed, and the only place we could actually stand up was in the 3 foot space between the two beds and in the bathroom! Furthermore, the entrance way to the room was so tight that only one person at a time could enter the tiny hallway because the door completely blocked it when open (the only way in an out in an emergency. There is not fire escape!). When we went down to ask for another room, the attendant was absent, then on his return, claimed to speak no english at all and simply waved at his computer as if to suggest there was nothing he could do. Our emails to the Hotel Altan asking for a refund have gone unanswered. We will be following up with Booking.com to see what they are able to do, as this is the first time this has ever happened to us (we travel alot) and I usually have good experiences booking through sites like Expedia, etc.

You get what you pay for! The hotel might look a bit rough but the location was perfect and the beds were clean and super comfortable!
The room was surprisingly good and comfortable so don’t be put off by the exterior!
The perfect cheap place to just lay your head.
The staff were super friendly and told us all about what was going on in the area.
Cafes bars & restaurants are all around a very busy bustling area so lots of atmosphere and people watching :)
There are no facilities at the hotel so we got up and went out for breakfast etc which was fine for us as we love to explore. Parking might be a bit tricky we were lucky to get a space right outside the hotel but this may not always be possible!
Nothing, we found it absolutely fine and comfortable for the money.
If you want 5 star then you have to pay for 5 star!

We stayed in a family room in the back of the building. The street in front is quite lively well into the night, but the back of the building is quiet even with the windows open. It was clean, quiet, comfortable and felt safe. Having 3 beds (a double and two singles instead of 2 doubles) was an unexpected bonus. The bathroom was large and clean. The room overlooked neighboring apartment buildings and felt very cosy and homey. The location of the hotel is fabulous.
The shower had a drainage issue. There was also some graffiti a former guest had made on the wall that was only half washed off/not yet painted over.

The location is nice. The bathroom was top, freshly renovated, and clean.
The hotel is tiny and noisy. No sound isolation. For a one, two night stay, it's great if you are not a light sleeper and every noise wakes you up. The room I was in was very tiny and definitely not for tall people ;)

Comfortable beds. Warm calm room. Clean renewed bathroom. Reachable by buses and metro. All you need.
Entrance may look scary but it is actually fine.

Great location, in Sankt Pauli
The bathroom was very tight for space, useable but not comfortably so.

A good basic hotel which was clean and a cool location
Noise from guests coming and going in the middle of the night 😀

Location is good
I was on top floor (4th floor), and could not stand up straight in most of room. No lift. Two small, narrow single beds. Room not cleaned or refreshed during two-night stay.

Simple hotel in central place. Good beds.
"Receptionist" did not speak german or english. The TV didn't work, and even though I told them, they never got it to work (or tried).

The location
The staff was rude, the hotel entrance felt like a trap house, it was very noisy, there was a weird hole in the wall (people could easily sneak on you whilst in the bathroom), the bathroom didn’t feel/look clean

No cleaning in The room even after we asked for it and we got it confirmed. We ended up doing The cleaning our self:(
