We loved this house! The double primary suite layout was perfect for us - 2 couple’s traveling together. The sun room was our favorite spot and we really enjoyed the television and the surround sound system.
We we’re visiting friends in Black Mountain so the location was perfect. We also drove to Asheville for dinner one night - very easy drive - about 20 minutes. Overall, we thought it was a wonderful place. We hope to return soon!

The house was beautifully furnished and decorated. Very nicely cleaned as well. It was a pleasure to stay there. Thanks!

This is a lovely place and was our second time staying there. It could use some updating but is very comfortable and has everything you really need. The house is in a lovely, quiet, and convenient location.

It was a very pleasant stay and a beautiful house. Thank you.

Everything was great. Black mountain is a really nice town. Had a little trouble adjusting the heat but got it figured out. Of course it was freezing the first couple of days. Would definitely recommend staying here if you’re in the area

My husband wanted to stay close to town. I wanted to be in the woods, more isolated. This property fit BOTH! Furnishings were comfortable, kitchen was well stocked and it was very clean. We will def stay here again.

This property is private, spacious and relaxing in the woods. We had some some minor problems with burned out bulbs and a dirty toilet. The property owner was very responsive and noted with apology. Everything else was great. We loved sitting on the deck off the sunroom while the weather cooperated. We looked for bears and other wildlife and had no encounters.

We loved the house, the property and the location. Ed was very responsive to any requests. The furniture was comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and the sunroom was particularly delightful.

Generally the home was fine. I think the description of the home is a bit overrated. It's quite dated, the layout is a bit strange (there's another review that talks about this in detail), and there were errors in the number of bathrooms hat were listed which was one of our primary considerstions for choosing this home. Otherwise, the location was great and communication with the host was good.

The house is as shown in photos. It was comfortable and had a very appreciated and generous supply of starter supplies such as hand soap, dish soap and paper towels. The owner was quick to respond to questions and called to see how our stay was going. The weather was exceptionally hot and humid during our stay, but the AC did a great job keeping the house cool. The Nest thermostat is easily adjustable with just a turn of the dial. The covered porch on the main level off the sunroom is totally surrounded by trees, has a nice table and chairs, and is a lovely spot for morning coffee, meals, or evening relaxing. The house is at the end of a very quiet Cul-de-sac shared with two other houses but feels very private as the other houses can't be seen through the woods. As was mentioned in a previous review, for pets there is no grass or lawn at all on the property. There is a flat area with gravel next to the garage that worked for our dog, or a short walk on the edge of the quiet street. On our first morning there we watched a very large black bear meandering around the driveway and street. Awesome! Highly recommend the Black Mountain Bistro for dinner. It has great outdoor seating, and the food is outstanding. Fresh Wood Fired Pizza and Pasta is very good, and also has a great covered outdoor eating area. The Flowering Bridge in Lake Lure was stunning, and we had a great outdoor lunch from The Lured Market and Grill. The streamside path from the Montreat Gate to the college is a great pet walk. Everywhere we encountered in the area was pet friendly. We would definitely return to Black Mountain again and would return to this house again. Thank you to the owners for being pet friendly!

Black Bear Retreat was our home in the woods for two weeks. We enjoyed very comfortable accommodations with a well-equipped kitchen, spacious first-floor bedroom with a very large walk-in closet and bathroom with a separate shower, soaking tub and vanity. The sunroom was delightful, surrounded by shade trees, making us feel as though we were in a tree house…a lovely place to enjoy socializing or reading.
The location was ideal for us; on a secluded cul de sac, surrounded by beautiful woods but close to the interesting town of Black Mountain.
Ed, the owner, was readily accessible by email to answer questions. The guest book in the home provides detailed information on operation of the Nest thermometer, the electronics (TVs, sound system, Wi-Fi) as well as restaurant reviews and places to visit.
Would we stay here again...absolutely!

The 4 of us enjoyed our stay at Black Bear Retreat. It felt like a home. We had everything we needed. The sunroom was our favorite gathering place. The entire home was immaculately clean. The location was very convenient to any place we wanted to go. We would there again.

Excellent place! The owner was extremely accommodating when I had a question upon arrival. The location is perfect. Very close to downtown Black Mountain and easily accessible to Asheville. It was just right for my family to enjoy a quick trip to the mountains.

We loved the place and location but feel some updating needs to be done. Both bathrooms and kitchen are out of date, the upstairs bath is small and cramped. Bath and kitchen towels are old, well used and stained - need complete replacement. King sheets/comforter set are outdated and the fitted sheet is too small for the mattress - had to put back on every day. Microwave is rusted and needs replacing. Even given all that, we absolutely loved our stay and location. The sunroom was my favorite room. We'd stay here again if it were still on VRBO.

Very easy process of renting the house. Our questions were answered promptly. It was in an excellent and convenient location. The house worked out great for the two families and it was very well stocked. The office was perfect to put the infant in to nap away from everyone. The garage was an added convenience. It was a “Great” place to stay.

This property was perfect for us…two masters and lots of space to spread out. The kitchen is well equipped and each window view was filled with fall foliage.
A delightful stay!

Enjoyed being amongst the tall trees. Home is large and nicely decorated, but in need of some updates.

Perfect for two couples with lots of 2 living spaces to sit and relax indoors and outside with the covered deck. The sun room was our favorite place to sit and visit with one another.
4.6
The house is really nice . And furnished nicely as well. I was a little disappointed that several light bulbs were burnt out, one shade in the master bedroom had a note that it was broken and there were several broken venetian blinds in the sunroom. I was surprised about those but nevertheless, great place to stay.

We had a great time visiting Black Mountain. This home was very pretty, close to town, yet had a delightful woodsy, private feel. The owners were attentive and friendly. We would definitely stay here again if we wind up in the area again.Diane

We enjoyed our stay in Black Mountain, NC. The house was nice with wonderful views and a great location. Our only complaint was the mattresses are in need of replacing and caused us to have some difficulty sleeping. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Feels secluded, but we were minutes away from all amenities. Super relaxing. And really just a nice house. Homey and neat. A great deal :)

The property was super clean, totally matched the description, and in a great neighborhood and location. Could not have had a better experience. And Black Mountain is an awesome little town. We will be back:)

the area was nice and the house was beautiful.

The owners were readily available for help with a couple minor mechanical things--most accommodating. This is a well appointed modern home. We know Black Mountain very well and wanted to be close in town this stay, having always stayed in the hills in the past. It is 5 minutes from anywhere in town. There are several good restaurants. The kichen is spacious and well equipped. The upstairs master BR has ensuite bath and a study suitable for sleeping on a queen air mattress that is included. There is another BR with bath on the first floor. Additional sleeping is in a large downstairs room on a couch or you can bring an air matress or cot, or both. We grilled on the back porch. It is situated in a neighborhood in the end of an exquisitely quiet, untrafficked cul-de-sac. Except when we took walks or went out to eat, we couldn't see the nearby houses. It was ideal. When grands visited, there was wonderful play area in the long driveway and virtually empty cul-de-sac. The enclosed sunroom is also suitable for sleeping, but it was our favorite spot to sit for morning coffee, sometimes for four hours. Thanks for the use of your excellent place.

This was our second stay here in this beautiful home. We like that is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Black Mountain is a cute, fun town, grocery store is close & there are great restaurants! Phil's Barbecue & Gondoliers Pizza are our favorites, Dripolator has really good coffee. We stayed here to ride our motorcycle--wonderful roads to ride, many places to go!! (we put 1500 miles on in a week! )
While the house is very nice, we had some issues with lighting & the Jacuzzi tub. There are not a lot of "staples" provided in the kitchen. It was clean & comfortable with plenty of room--my favorite is the sun room!! The deck is a wonderful, quiet place to eat & enjoy the sounds of all the birds. On our last day, we enjoyed seeing a mama bear & her two cubs in the driveway!! What a sight~~ and so cute!! :)
I think you would enjoy this home, Ed is easy to work with & usually responds quickly to any questions. We hope to return here again!!
