El Meson is a quaint basic little hotel. It’s centrally situated at the south of el Centro and convenient to the city. It’s a bit rustic but very nice. In the lower level is a restaurant offering a discount to residents. It offers clean rooms, shower, daily maid service and friendly staff. If you want basic amenities, I give el meson my top rating.

Hotel has a great location. The street has a lot of traffic, so if you are sensitive to street sounds this would be something to consider. Bed was comfortable.
The front desk was very helpful getting me a taxi when I was leaving.

For the price this is a very good option to be in the center of Xalapa. Our room was small but we only needed to crash for a night. The coffee in the room was excellent the shower was very good and walking out there were many excellent options for breakfast.

We are very pleased with the staff. They have a good helpful attitude. The rooms are unique, vintage. If you get a suite, specify which one you would like as each one is different. The food in the restaurant owned by the same property is excellent!! Thank you for your hospitality

I absoulutely loved our stay here! The rooms are spacious and clean. The air conditioning was an added bonus. The staff was kind and attentive. Great location within walking distance to the historical area. The free breakfast was delicious! We will definitely be back!

Absolutely beautiful property. We fell in love everywhere we looked, and always looked forward to breakfast in the morning. The staff was wonderful and the dining room- beautiful, elegant, and super-welcoming. Thank you for everything. It is our new favorite hotel, and we'll be back soon!

Beautiful small oasis within walking distance to the historic center and lake. Helpful and professional staff. Extraordinary restaurant that was a delight to have breakfast in. Only downside was the noise level at night. There is a bar less than a block away that blasted music till well past 1am, which made sleeping very difficult.

Every room is unique and when I arrived they showed me some options so I could choose where I wanted to stay. Very friendly staff.

This is one of the wort places I have ever stayed in a long life of travel. The reason? A nightclub spend up RIGHT NEXT DOOR and they BLAST music all night long . As I write this it is now 3:12 a.m. with no signs that they will stop . I am sorry about this because the hotel is not at fault. Their business will be destroyed by this and they (probably) don't deserve it, but you cannot expect people to spend sleepless nights. Oh, and just how loud is the music? I have high quality earplugs in and I tried sandwiching my head between two pillows . No good. It seems to almost shake the building.

Old world charming hotel, centrally located. Nice breakfast. Would stay again.

This is a revamped historic mansion, oozing charm. But not for Seniors. The best rooms are two-story suites with the bedroom on a balcony and the only bathroom downstairs. For people who get up during the night, a steep wooden stairway is not appealing. Our other gripe with the hotel is that it isn't part of today's electronic world. There was only one outlet in our room, an impossible situation for today's cell carrying, iPad /laptop generation. No where to plug everything in. We've seen other historic hotels in Mexico upgrade and deal with this problem with a simple installed outlet "strip" on each side of the room, multiplying the outlet possibilities to accommodate every need.
Otherwise, the hotel is lovely, central, filled with plants, immaculate and has the best breakfast restaurant in town, with an amazing menu. We stayed four days and never ran out of interesting breakfasts. Seems like the whole town eats there. The staff was great. If you book at Meson, plan on a smaller room on one floor. Not very exciting but certainly better than the Holiday Inn Express next door.

Personnel is extremely helpful: Before my arrival there was a traffic incident and the police was deviating the traffic one block behind the hotel entrance, on that deviation I noticed that we were at the hotel's parking area and asked a person that was opening the door for help, he let me park inside after I explained that I had a reservation and took all my luggage with him in a street with a pronounced slope uphill. The welcome was warm and check-in fast, the hotel has a couple of garden areas which invite you to relax. The rooms are old hacienda style, with very high ceilings, very quiet, the beds are comfortable and clean. Inside the rooms there is a second level all made of wood which adds charm to it. The hotel has HD TV and WIFI access on every room. The hotel has one of the best restaurants in town and has an excellent location close to the government offices and downtown. I wish my stay was longer but I had to continue my trip and thanked the personnel on my way out. Definitely I will go back to this hotel on the future.

If you are looking for colonial charm, but want a quiet, comfortable room - the Mason del Alferéz is perfect. The bathroom is older but everything works. There is a heater high up, and this provides the hotels only real challenge - how to keep the loft from overheating while the main level is chilly

Good value hotel. Great location.
City can be noisy with bars and music though.

The rooms are nice but the ammenities are minimal. The furniture is not confortable and the fans very noisy.

If you are lucky enough to visit Xalapa – a busy town sprawling on the side of a lovely valley – and you wish to meet some of the best aspects of Mexican traditional culture, you could do a lot worse than staying in the El Mesón del Alferez (this means “the Lieutenant’s Inn” – ask for more information!).A small jewel of a hotel situated on an intersection in downtown Xalapa, right next to the Holiday Inn and a few good restaurants. Once you step inside you are immediately charmed by the colonial aspect, the elegant wooden furniture and the flowering plants growing in every possible space. The hotel is part of an original colonial building and has been beautifully restored and maintained. We stayed there for 12 nights and found the hotel to be spotlessly clean everywhere (just try and look for a cobweb anywhere – there aren’t any, not even in the highest beams!). The personnel is absolutely charming, well-trained and very hard-working. Our bed was perfect – a firm mattress just like we prefer it. Everything in the room was in good condition and worked. We ate breakfast almost every day in the restaurant downstairs – a wide choice of traditional Mexican dishes as well as some simpler breakfast choices are available. The coffee is excellent (of course!) and the cooking delicious. All juices are fresh and just-pressed. The personnel was helpful and pleasant. As everywhere in Xalapa, the language is Spanish not English.

Meson del Alferez is right in the center of town, two blocks from the main park. It is an old building, well maintained, with a friendly and efficient staff. The rooms (our room, anyway) are on two levels --- living area and bathroom downstairs, sleeping area up a fairly narrow stairway. Our room was fairly dark inside but had enough lights. Due to the location in the center of the city, one hears traffic noise, traffic police whistles, sirens and so on. More problematic, hotel guests sometimes gather outside their rooms and talk loudly until after midnight.
The rooms have very old doors and locks, so that they are not very secure. But the hotel provides a lockable safe box, and I strongly recommend using it.
The hotel restaurant is well known and serves excellent food. A "continental breakfast" is included in the room cost, and many good choices are available without extra cost. I bought an "upgraded" breakfast one day and decided it wasn't necessary.
Overall, we liked Meson del Alferez and would stay there again, although I would be more clear with the staff that I hoped for a room farther away from public areas of the hotel.
