The Barcelo Funchal Oldtown hotel is the hotel to stay if you want to be right in the center of the historic district of Funchal and right across from the Lido Promenade and from the Cathedral. It is walking distance to all of Funchal sightseeing sites. This is a wonderful hotel. It is very clean and nicely decorated. The rooms are of a nice size and the bathrooms are impeccable. The lobby and the bar area are lovely and spacious. The breakfast offerings are generous - with a very wide assortments of items. (They even make the omelettes and fried eggs to your liking.) The hotel has a super nice rooftop pool area (on the 5th floor), with an infinity pool and with panoramic views of Funchal. (It also has a spa and a small gym - which we did not get to use.) As this hotel is located in the very center of the oldtown, there are plenty of restaurants right outside and around the hotel, as well as many shops of all kinds (e.g., gift, clothing, gelatto stores). Right around the hotel, there is even a taxi stand and even a McDonalds!) This hotel is very well maintained (I was told that it was recently opened - so all rooms, bathrooms, etc, appear as brand new.) The reception staff is terrific, and if you have a late flight out of Madeira, this hotel has a safe room right behind the reception area where you can store your luggage after you check out of the hotel and which you can pick up before you leave for the airport. When I return to Madeira, I will definitely stay here.

Absolutely loved everything about this property (except the parking situation.) I loved the way it smelled when we walked in, the front desk staff was polite and friendly, the room was clean, the bed was nicely sized, the sheets were amazing, the air condition worked great, the bathroom was fancy, the pool had an amazing view, and there was so much to do within walking distance.

Their roof top view of millions of lights at night is spectacular! Plus there is a bar and pool on that deck. Hotel is beautiful, easy to reach harbor, funicular, great restaurants by foot. Breakfast had huge varieties of everything from cold cuts to fresh exotic fruits, great fresh baked bread and omelets if you like. Would stay there again!

No parking on site. But otherwise this was one of the best hotels we have stayed at. Food was excellent, bed was big and comfy, amenities were great, staff was friendly, breakfast buffet included which was delicious. The rooms were spacious and beautiful - super clean. The rooftop pool and bar was very relaxing and the view was spectacular. Would stay here again.

Must be the best hotel in Old Town Funchal! Greatest location, nice modern interior, rooftop has the best views, awesome pool, and great bar. The included breakfast was delicious and we looked forward to it every morning. Do have to park in a garage a few minutes walk away but I think that is every hotel in this area. And the walk is through lovely Old Town. Perfect hotel!!

Great hotel right in the heart of old town Funchal. Amazing rooftop top pool and bar with probably the best cocktails I had my entire trip. Beds and pillows were comfortable and very clean. Breakfast was amazing. Would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone travelling to Madeira.

Our stay at the Barcelo hotel Funchal was delightful. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was lovely. We had a room with a side balcony. Not big enough to sit on, but it gave us a view of the sea. Breakfast was always plentiful and had good choices. We didn’t eat there in the evenings as my husband likes craft ale and they only served Guinness. Whereas many other restaurants had Portuguese real ale. But that was a preferential choice. I would recommend this hotel.

Beautiful new property in the best location in old town part of Funchal. They had entertainment each night on the patio, which was beautiful and the dining options were also very great. The rooftop pool is small and not deep, but it was beautiful view and the water was clean and nice. The staff And property are both very upscale

Our stay at the Barcelona Funchal was our first to a Barcelo property and it won’t be our last. The location is perfect for exploring the central old town tourist district and is within walking distance to the cable cars, Se Cathedral and tons of dining options. The room was beautifully appointed and exceeded our expectations. One tip is to remember to pre-arrange a boxed breakfast if your flight leaves early as we did not request until the evening prior which was too short notice for the kitchen.

Great location in centre of Funchal. Rooftop pool and bar very nice. The only negative is if you have a car you have to park it in a parking lot about 7minute walk away at a shopping centre. It was fine but some may not like that option. Otherwise a very nice hotel.

Very modern clean quiet hotel. Central to everything. Fabulous enormous walk in shower with the best rainfall shower ever. Bedding and bed wonderful. Water and chocolates in the room. Hotel environment very modern and unique. Situated right in the middle of everything. Rooftop pool and bar an oasis in the middle of a busy town. There is nothing bad to say about it. All excellent.

We loved this hotel - new, clean, well maintained and in an excellent location. Service in the restaurant for dinner was pretty slow but breakfast was very good. The rooftop pool is amazing, just what we wanted, but admittedly it’s a small rooftop so often is at capacity. I’d recommend reshuffling the layout of beds/tables etc to have more sun beds and parasols! Otherwise, all excellent.

The hotel was right in the middle of Funchal old town - a perfect location for exploring. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was amazing. There was very limited space at the rooftop pool and bar which was slightly disappointing as it was extremely hot and a dip in the pool would have been welcome!

Very comfortable stay. Close to all the restaurants shops and seafront boat ride departure zone so extremely convenient. We didn't find the outside street noise to be intrusive, having read other reviews. We were at the front of the hotel. There was a street singer on one evening but it wasn't very loud, the songs were good and it didn't go on late. Breakfast we found to be exceptional in terms of the food choices. The breakfast area gets a little crowded at times but it's a downtown hotel that you're staying in for the prime location. The bar at the front of the hotel is comfortable and quite well stocked. Prices are typical of elsewhere on the island and traveller's will be pleased with value compared with 5 star hotels in other destinations outside Portugal. The hotel is very new and the room and bathroom were decorated to a very high standard. Transfer to the airport is 25 minutes by car. I would highly recommend this hotel for travellers who want to be near to the large number of excellent local restaurants and who are planning on boat trips for whale watching and jeep tours. The rooftop pool was more than enough for us to cool down in and our 5 yo daughter enjoyed using it greatly. If you want to hang out by a large pool all day then this hotel may not be the right choice for you. We found the staff to be efficient helpful and friendly.

This hotel met our needs - clean and pleasant rooms, good beds, good breakfast buffet, helpful staff. We were not pleased with the coffee service, nor did we find the lack of parking near by the hotel helpful. We were especially pleased with the assistance the front desk staff offered us around our very early departure and treansportation to the airport.

We stayed at the Barcelo Funchal Oldtown for 9 nights, and found the hotel to be exceptional, with outstanding staff. Our king room was very clean, and the public areas were immaculate as well. The biggest surprise was the wealth of offerings in the included daily breakfast. Food included made to order omelets, a number of other hot items, fresh fruit, fresh baked pastries and breads, juices, automated coffee machines, cold cuts, cheeses, and many other offerings. The decor was ultra modern, and we understand the Barcelo was named the top hotel in the world by Time magazine. It has only been open for a year. The rooftop pool and seating area is very scenic and relaxing, something we visited every day. I highly recommend the Barcelo as a top notch hotel in the middle of old town Funchal. Transportation from the airport to the Barcelo by the Aerobus is very inexpensive (6 euro one way or 10 round trip - use stop 5 or 6 with a half block walk from either), and there are hundreds of shops, restaurants, bars, and entertainment businesses within easy walking distance. Enjoy!

We loved this hotel and will definitely go back on our next trip to Madeira. Although in the touristic area, it was really quiet. There is no parking on site but one is conveniently located at a walking distance. We enjoyed the location closed by the water to walk at night after dinner. Staff is welcoming.

Property had a good location right in the centre of the old town surrounded by bars and restaurants. This however means some noise on an evening especially from an adjacent club which was annoying. The hotel is new and well maintained but lacking luxury that you would expect at a five star, for example minimum toiletries (you have to ask via app) and average bed. Breakfast was good and included egg station, hot and cold dishes however was busy and due to being serve yourself coffee sometimes you queued a long time for the coffee machine Comfortable stay for a few nights but for me a good 4 star quality not true 5*. Location excellent and staff were very helpful when I contacted them in advance when I asked for help

Fantastic 4 nights in the barcelo funchal oldtown.Hotel in immaculate condition, everywhere was clean and tidy. Staff were approachable and friendly, aswell as professional. Room was excellent, very large king size bed, large bathroom with an excellent shower. Air conditioning actually worked and was most welcome after a hot day of sightseeing. Breakfast was good, lots of choice a two rooms of seating.....only slight problem kept breaking down, but staff on hand quickly to try amd remedy. Highly recommend this hotel ,its location was perfect for funchal oldtown, plenty of restaurants to choose from in the vicinity. Would definitely stay again if visiting funchal.
