Interesting hotel. Historic property with some beautiful architecture and features but plastered with garish signs and furnished with unusual pieces.
Overpriced in my opinion.

Very nice building with a good breakfast. Rooms very comfortable for sleeping- quiet, climate controlled and double curtains

Hotel is beautiful but not a lot of amenities for the price.

The hotel is in a beautiful, renovated historic building. The rooms are unique with very high ceilings and very tall windows.
There are several public sitting areas. We had a short overnight stay but would definitely stay here if we return to Buffalo.

Beautifully restored building with lots of history. We stayed 2 nights and walked the grounds, went to the museum and learned the history of the building. Very friendly staff, as well as good food and wine at the bar. It’s also about 30 minutes to Niagara Falls.

Beautiful property, large spacious yard with tables and benches to relax by the large trees. My son’s reaction was there is no way we are staying here, it’s a castle!
Great service from the friendly staff. Beautiful artwork throughout the massive hallways and rooms.
Nestled right beside the state university and in walking distance. Breakfast has egg frittatas, pancakes , cereals, bread/ bagels, yogurt, fresh juice and fruit.
I would definitely recommend this place and hope to come back one day.

This is the first time staying at the Richardson. The hotel was clean, architecture amazing, staff wonderful. The history of the place architecturally and as a former Asylum is awesome.
I will definitely be back.

Amazing Hotel. Well maintained and staff very friendly. I do recommend it.

Very interesting hotel, especially from an architectural and historic standpoint. The staff is nice. The rooms are clean. But there’s a few problems. The pillows are terrible hard as rocks. The food of breakfast is disgusting. It’s hard to believe a hotel that builds itself as a four star serves this putrid dog food to humans for breakfast.
The room is filled with plastic wrapped cups in the house. Coffee is terrible as well.

I stayed there overnight on the drive home from a weekend trip. This is a stunning historic property that was built by a renowned architect to house a progressive for its time, state insane asylum. I loved everything about the building and the decor. There is a small museum downstairs and a phone tour of the grounds is offered. Guided tours available as well. The room was comfortable and I got my much needed rest after a long weekend and a 6 hr drive. My only complaint is that, when I arrived on Labor Day evening, there were no food options at all, not even a vending machine, not even a microwave to heat up a service-area sandwich I'd brought (after reading the reviews about there being no food options) luckily I had other food supplies with me, as I was too tired to go out searching for a place to eat. The breakfast was offered and was lovely! The staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful. Will recommend to friends!

Rooms were clean and quiet. The structure is amazing. The continental breakfast was pretty poor.

This place is really cool!! Especially if you like history. Other than the smell of really old building and the missing refrigerator in my room that I know I paid for it was really nice.

Incredible place with tons of history. Architectural exhibit on Buffalo worth the price of the stay. Such a hidden gem!

This was an amazing property. The service, bedrooms, large hallways, food…just all the Accommodations were perfect. Make sure you watch the video about the history … hard to believe the effort to create the hotel from an insane asylum which was in dire need of repair.

From the front desk (Benny) or the bartender (David ) they made us feel good about staying at the Richardson.

The Richardson Hotel is undeniably a magnificent architectural masterpiece that captures the eye with its stunning Granger and Romanesque design. The original architects’ vision is beautifully preserved, and the renovations to modernize this grand structure have been executed with great care. As you step inside, the spacious hallways invite you to pause, offering ample seating areas perfect for reading, playing games, or enjoying cocktails outside the lounge.
The guest rooms are equally impressive, boasting likely over 20-foot ceilings and large windows that flood the space with natural light. This design creates an atmosphere of openness, allowing guests to unwind without feeling cramped. While the furnishings are minimal, they do provide a comfortable experience; however, those who prefer a softer bed may find the mattress a bit too firm for their liking.
Unfortunately, the hotel does have its drawbacks. Upon entering, guests are greeted by an overwhelmingly strong floral fragrance that can be disconcerting, especially for those sensitive to strong smells. This scent permeates the entire space, making it a potential issue for some visitors.
While the front desk staff is charming, it’s evident that service is not prioritized by management. There are no uniforms or name tags, which detracts from the upscale experience one would expect at a hotel of this caliber. Additionally, the absence of a concierge and the lack of consistent staff pr

The facilities, the room, the beautiful building that looked like a castle, it was all breathtaking! The staff was incredibly kind and helpful as well. Breakfast was also great!
I did however find a used bin with disposables inside the bathroom and the bedroom from a previous guest which I wish had been emptied before our arrival.

I had yellow jackets in my room. Idk how. The staff made no attempt to compensate when I checked out. If I had been stung, there would have been a large fallout with this hotel. The check-in process took over an hour due to a lack of front desk knowledge and operation.

The property is magnificent. Very friendly staff. Clean well kept rooms. Nice bar. Very nice breakfast. Loved the first floor architect gallery and history of the Richardson.

What a gorgeously restored historic building. We loved the Centre for Architecture onsite. The building has a fascinating history! Everything was exquisite. We will definitely stay there whenever we are back in Buffalo to visit our son who attends UB.

What kind of establishment are you running when hotel staff enter rooms with 'do not disturb' hanging on the door in the evening? Then again in the morning having another staff member trying to open the room with us still inside saying "we thought you checked out already?!"
Other than this, the hotel was extremely beautiful and was a complete treasure

Very fun, unusual hotel. The historical aspect and architecture information in the mini museum was really interesting. We took the time to wander around a bit and took several pictures of the amazingly high ceilings and beautiful staircase. The room was very comfortably and clean. Happy to have a kuerig-compatible coffee maker, too. No fridge but we were only there overnight so it wasn’t an issue. Easy location for downtown Buffalo.

I stayed here many times when it was the Hotel Henry and the hotel has changed a bit. Good and not too good but all in all a pleasant stay.

It's a historic building and well restored. Unfortunately my room was not ready at 4:30 in the afternoon and the restaurant was closed. But I was given a complimentary glass of wine at the bar.
The hotel is close to the Albright Knox art museum and the Elmwood village. Parking is free. The continental breakfast is included and was lavish!

The hotel is very poorly marked to get into the parking lot to begin with!
there was construction that prohibited the drive-through to unload our luggage! Nobody there to greet us or help us! The design of the bathroom was very inefficient where you must be all the way in the bathroom in order to close the door otherwaise it almost hits the toilet! theshower door is also to large when open is too close to the sink! and the surface of the Shower floor is VERY SLIPPERY and dangerous, a lawsuit waiting to happen!

There was extensive renovation happening near the entrance and in the floor where I stayed. There was no indication and no notification about it.. that area was also not restricted for public use. Also the room was not properly set and manager had to be notified. Dustbins were left without liners, shower door handle was broken, no fridge.

I had booked a room at the property for two days i.e. from 29th to 31st for which I made the payment upfront. When I arrived on July 29th to check in, they told me that someone from their management cancelled my reservation on July 07, 2024, for which I did not receive any prior notification. However, the manager arranged for a room. Then on the 30th at 11:00 PM, I get a phone call from the reception telling me I was suppose to check out on the 30th again I did not get any prior notifications. I was then asked at 11:00 PM if I wanted to extend my stay. Mind you I have already paid for 2 nights, with no other option I had to agree as I had an exam the next day and I did not want any unnecessary hassle. The next day when I went at the front desk to speak with the manager and sort the confusion no one was available to speak with. I was told that the manager will be available in the evening so I went again in the evening but again no one was available to help me with the situation. The lady at the reception gave me emails of all the people I could get in touch with I have send emails to all of them but I have not received any answers from anyone.
My experience was not the most pleasant one with them, there was no coordination amongst the staff, their systems was pulling up completely different information from what was communicated to me during my reservation.
All in all not a good experience.

The property is amazing with a fascinating history. While our room was great, the hotel was not able to provide the king room I had requested. So the romantic getaway was a tad less romantic. Bummer.
While the hotel appears to be a luxurious place, it falls short on a number of fronts. I love baths and discovered that they don't provide stoppers for the tubs. So, I used a plastic bag. And, there is no mini-fridge. My partner needed to store a medication in a fridge and had to leave it with the front desk where we were advised that we could order a mini-fridge for an extra charge. He opted to rely on the hotel fridge which worked just fine, but not having a room fridge just seemed odd.
Just the little things, but not a 5-star experience.
