The space
Staying at Mel's Place cabin is a great way to see how easy it is to adjust to off grid life. The whole experience is really a non-issue, but it is probably a little different than what you are used to at home.
A few things to know about off grid life in the desert. Water is a very precious resource here. There's plenty for your stay, but please be mindful of your use. (That's the whole idea! ) The electricity is provided by the sun. We have a more than sufficient 13 kw system. Due to natural power limitations mainly after dark, please do not bring other appliances (without asking) as overloading the system may cause an inconvenient power failure.
*We are asking guests to bring their own (only if possible) queen bed linens & towels (bed pillows & extra blankets ARE provided).
Because we are in a severe drought & water is even more precious than usual. Every little bit helps.
*If you CAN NOT bring your own due to your travel itinerary, no worries! We will provide everything, but let us know when you book, please, SO THE CABIN CAN BE PROPERLY PREPARED FOR YOUR STAY*
*There is great AC and heat and a small fridge in the kitchen.
*The composting toilet is clean, odor free, not gross at all and simple to use. Most guest are pleasantly surprised that it's no big deal.
**We look forward to hosting your vacation & perhaps introducing you for the first time to the magic of Big Bend!!

The cabin and 20 acres, mostly south and east of the cabin. The property line is directly behind the casita, where you park, and the majority of the property lies in front to the east (towards the mountains and the road in). Please do not wander across the property line north or west of the parking area. My neighbor is unforgiving.
We live on site 400 feet from the cabin. Far enough to not affect your privacy or mine.
The cabin is self checkin. Our level of interaction is up to you. Please add the vrbo app to your phone so that you can easily receive a text in case we need to reach you about anything important, such as eminent severe weather.
Come experience the quiet solitude, starry skies, and the harsh beauty of the desert.
We also have a campground on
the property. It's a good distance from the cabin and doesn't affect privacy.

We had a great stay at Mel's place. Had everything we needed: cozy and comfortable accommodations, close to BBNP and Terlingua, privacy and scenery. Highlights included off the grid living, watching sunrise from bed, stargazing on the open air bed, and the delightful decorating and organization. Would rebook if we go back to BBNP!
