One may expect that Lake Anna is great for a spring or summer vacation — which is true — but what they may not know is that Lake Anna is worth in the fall and winter, too. There are endless things to see and do, both on and off the lake and each season brings a new and unique experience to be had.
Spring
Things to Do
While you might be cold if you take a dip in the water, spring is the perfect time to take out a kayak or canoe, as it is the official start of paddling season! With over 13,000 surface acres of fresh water, Lake Anna is a paddler’s paradise. It’s also a great time to cast a line. There are plenty of fish to be caught and there are much less anglers on the water during this time.
Things to See
Lake Anna is magnificently colorful in the spring, making it one of the most gorgeous times to visit. Beautiful flower buds appear, painting the landscape in bright colors. Walk the trails at Lake Anna State Park and witness firsthand life sprouting forth — green leaves reappearing and blossoms everywhere.
Eat & Drink
Imagine this: The weather is starting to warm up, the sun is shining and you’re dying to enjoy a great meal outdoors. Restaurants line the perimeter of Lake Anna and the surrounding counties have numerous restaurants with outdoor patio seating, many of which also live on the water.
Summer
Things to Do
Cool off by diving into the water of Lake Anna. Whether it’s boating, waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding or jet skiing, you’ll never run out of water sports and excursions. You’ll almost forget that you’re in Central Virginia when you lounge and play on these white sand beaches. You even might find some hidden treasure, as summer is prime time for gold hunting and this is a wildly popular activity in the area, as Lake Anna State Park pays homage to the area’s history with Stampmill Sam’s Gold Adventure, a gold-themed event held during summer. The program includes a trip to Goodwin Gold Mine, where the area’s first gold was discovered. Get a lesson in the methods used to mine gold and a chance to do some gold panning yourself at Pigeon Run.
Things to See
If you’re here in July, make sure you get to see the incredible firework displays that take place Fourth of July weekend. Whether you’re firing up the grill and getting ready to watch from where you’re lodging our you’re planning to head out by boat and enjoy it on the water, this patriotic firework display lights up the sky and you don’t want to miss it!
Eat & Drink
Many farmers markets take place in the area, like the Mineral Farmers Market, allowing you to shop for locally sourced produce and ingredients. You can find fruits and vegetables, as well as handmade baked goods, fresh seafood, fresh flowers and more. You can also cool off with a refreshing beverage at one of the many local distilleries, wineries or breweries.
Fall
Things to do
Now is your chance to take advantage of the last few weeks of perfect weather, while also learning about the area’s rich history. Some of the most important battles of the Civil War happened just a short distance away. Fall is the perfect time of year to tour these important locations and learn about our nation’s history because it’s neither too hot or cold to explore.
Things to See
Without the scorching sun, your family will love hiking the trails surrounding Lake Anna and take in the scenic vistas that feature fabulous fall foliage. The trees become vibrant with color—the reds, yellows and oranges of a lovely fall landscape. You will quickly understand why people from all over come to Lake Anna for leaf peeping.
Eat & Drink
Fall is also the best time to experience Virginia’s wine country. Take a tour of the local vineyards during the height of their beauty, with luscious grape bunches coloring the laden vineyards. Blaze your own tasting trail through wine country. The Lake Anna Grapes & Grains Festival is a can’t-miss fall event featuring craft beer, local wine and great food—all right on the lake.
Winter
Things to Do
Life slows down around Lake Anna in the winter, making it very relaxing for a secluded winter getaway. If you’re looking for a weekend of pure relaxation, Lake Anna may be exactly what you need. Book a rental home or visit one of the local bed and breakfasts for beautiful environments at a fraction of the cost. Don’t let the cold weather scare you off the lake, either. Local anglers know that even in the winter, Lake Anna is still prime for fishing. The warm water from the North Anna Power Station makes the lake a refuge for both baitfish and gamefish, especially striped bass and largemouth bass.
Things to See
Christmas cheer exuberates Lake Anna and the quaint counties that surround it. See a small-town parade or get cocoa and crafts at the local Christmas fair. The Louisa Christmas Festival and Parade are holiday traditions that have been going on since 1742. Board a trolley or hitch a hayride through a forest of lights at the Festival of Lights in Bumpass. Explore downtown Orange as it transforms into an old-fashioned village at the start of December. The streets are filled with holiday music, seasonal vendors and, of course, Santa.
Eat & Drink
Without the crowds, you can get right into the best restaurants without waiting. Lake Anna and the nearby cities and towns offer some unforgettable cuisine. If you are a gourmand, you may want to plan your visit around Louisa County’s Restaurant Week. This is a great opportunity to visit the county’s diverse restaurants at a discounted price.
We hope to continue seeing you year-round here in Lake Anna, so you don’t miss out the local seasonal secrets and delights.

A nice place in a lovely location. We enjoyed the well stocked kitchen, the access to boathouse, grill and fire pit, as well as enjoyable game room and scenic views.

We stayed here with family members from VA and Hawaii this past weekend. The house was perfect and definitely the best appointed of all the vacation rentals and time shares we have had. The deck at the boathouse was perfect, as were the 2 kayaks, numerous tubes and floats, and the life preservers. There are tables on both expansive deck levels, a great grill my bbq-expert son claimed was the best he ever had used, chairs everywhere (sunny and shaded), and a fantastic fire pit by the dock with wood (and axes to cut more from a huge pile). Great for s'mores! Full refrigerators, coffee makers (drip or K-cup, your choice), and every imaginable appliance in both the main floor kitchen and in the huge 2nd kitchen downstairs. The master bathroom had a 5x5 shower with showerheads on 3 different walls and 2 side sprays (all the bathrooms were large). TVs everywhere, lighting was perfect, shades and decorations fantastic. The game room has ping-pong, foosball, air hockey, and board games galore.
The owners answered every question promptly and, although having owned for only a year and a half are obviously quite talented in running a rental property. They have anticipated pretty much everything guests would want. Would give extra stars if possible!

I've stayed at the Subshine House numerous times and it is as charming as ever with the new ownership. It's a serene oasis! The sunrises from the deck and expansive views from the house are amazing. The house is clean and well stocked and there is a TV in each room. My dog enjoyed playing in the big yard and water. Kiran was super nice, communitive and helpful. I will definitely come back again.

We can’t speak highly enough about our stay over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Our family really enjoyed our time. The views are incredible (especially at sunrise), the house is spacious and clean and is well stocked with cooking equipment and had has lots of games/activities. The hosts are extremely helpful and accommodating – our best host experience so far with VRBO. We brought our boat and the host let us dock it by their boat house and gave us access to their kayaks, inflatables and other water activity toys. We had a great week, highly recommend the property and will be back.

The location is perfect. It offers a slice of heaven! The water was sooooo warm.

This was a nice location and the views were amazing. I gave it 4 stars for several reasons. Not that four stars isn't good. First of all. I have been staying at various different locations for 5 years with vrbo and I have never had to make my own bed. I paid $85 for a linen fee and we still had to put on the sheets on every bed. It was left on the bed. I felt like housekeeping should have done that. Which was an additional fee of$175.00. I think some changes should be made in that aspect. Now every room had access to the lake which was amazing and very entertaining to say the least.
The lake house was clean with additional cleaning supplies available. I usually bring my own though. I loved the shower in the master bedroom which was huge! With it's own private bathroom. The bonus was a TV in every room. We spent most of our time on the lake. Would have been nice if there was a pedal boat but they had several kayaks available. Beautiful place to visit. Definitely won't be disappointed with the amazing views. We stayed out there for hours :)

The Sunshine House was perfect!!! It was everything we needed and more for a great family getaway. The house was very well equipped- with absolutely everything we needed - kitchen appliances, lake toys, (floats, baby toys, chairs etc.) TVs in every bedroom, and paper products. Our hosts were amazing and very responsive to all questions we had. The house was very clean and everything was labeled for easy use. We will be back!!!

This was a great spot on the private side of the lake. We brought a boat with us and it was easy to get in and out of the lake. The house was well stocked with games, towels and water items and there were plenty of normal size cooking items for a group of 8.
The sunrise over the lake was beautiful. The upstairs deck is gated at the top of both staircases which allowed me to sit on the porch and not worry about where my dog was headed off to. The water temperature was a little warm but it was July.
Kiran responded very quickly to questions and did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.

We stayed at the sunshine house with our dog. We had a great time! The views from deck were really nice! This property is very convenient to the private boat launch which was very easy to launch a boat. Will definitely stay again!

We had a wonderful stay at the Sunshine house. Our family of 5 reunited with our best friends and their kids for our stay on Lake Anna. We spent most of our stay outdoors - on the lake, on the deck and in the backyard. The deck which was spacious, provided a beautiful view of the lake and was well lit at night. The island and dining table provided enough space for our 2 families (9 people) to eat meals together. The kitchen was well stocked and the house was clean. We used the kayak and paddleboard provided. The paddleboard needs to be replaced but was able to hold one small adult who has experience paddleboarding - it has many divets of exposed styrofoam and is pretty thin. We enjoyed the games in the basement and grill as well. It was a short drive to the grocery store and taphouse. Would definitely stay there again!

Such a delight. Sheila was very responsive prior to our arrival to answer questions. The house was perfect. Clean and had everything we could possibly need. So peaceful. Gorgeous views. We were up every morning to watch the sunrise. The beauty of nature. Herons, geese, and even a magnificent bald eagle. Deer, fox, and even delightful cows. Just what we needed. Thank you Sheila for your place of sunshine for all.

We loved our family stay at the Sunshine House. What a nice restful several days we had! The home had everything we needed and a plethora of games to choose from. We actually found some that we plan to but to continue to play at home. The water was really warm and on the hot days it was too hot for us to get into but we still had a wonderful time. The sunrise on the deck was well worth the trip. Thank you for letting our whole family stay there including our fur babies.

I love staying at the Sunshine house! This is my 3rd stay. The views of the lake are great and the water warm enough for us to swim in April. My dog enjoyed playing in the big yard. The house in immaculate and the owner has made nice decorating touches to make it feel like a real lake house. The kitchen is well stocked with nice dishes and a quality coffee maker. The tvs are big and the beds are comfortable. Shelia is very communicative and pleasant in here correspondence. We will definitely come back again.

Our adult family of 5, including one pet, thoroughly enjoyed our 5-night stay. The property was clean, location was great and allowed us to keep our two boats at the dock, and the fishing was excellent! Sheila was prompt in her communications and we are seriously considering this as our annual family vacation venue! Thank you, Sheila!

Really a very nice house for a couple. It would also be comfortable for four adults. You can fit more but it would be tight. However it ranks as one of the top homes we ever rented. Clean, everything works and great master bedroom with bathroom. A plus is the boat launch is extremly and very nice. This was a fishing trip for myself and wife. Excellent view of the lake along with great deck.
