Lovely Historical building. We had a large room but the water would not get hot or even warm for showers. Hotel just needs to have a bit of a update with new sheets and refurbished bathrooms. We still enjoyed our stay though as the location is great.

What can I say? Not a five-star hotel, but a five-star value and historical relic. Queen Elizabeth and Chekov stayed here, so can you.
Perfectly clean and adequate, centrally located.

This is a very old hotel and the rooms are very old too.
The saving grace are the staff. They are ALL fantastic.
One person in particular needs a special mention is Mr Chandika the reception manager. He was just amazingly helpful.

Very old and historic place and you can get a great place for small money. The crew is really helpful and try what they can.

The Grand Oriental is a wonderful building. Unfortunately it has been unsympatheticly renovated many years ago and is tired and worn which maked it difficult for staff to keep it clean.
On the plus side its $1.50 $AUS tuk tuk ride any nunber of great places.
It's got a great dinnig room, open all day
And the staff are terrifically helpful
And it was only $35 aus a night.
I arrived at 1.30 am and it was a bit of a shock but after 4 nights I'd stay there again

The property is old and not maintained well. First room no hot water on first night. Second day water flooding due to AC break down in room. Room change on second day. Limited choice for breakfast. Daily choice of eggs toast butter jam and tea and coffee. Very difficult to order from menu for Lunch or Dinner, Buffet choice every day.

Too old building though the entrance look good
It took around 15minutes to run hot water.

It was close to what I expected, maybe the only two surprises were how huge the rooms were and how much history is there behind this hotel. With all that, with a little more effort in maintaining it, they could make it a dream place. But on the other hand it would probably be much more expensive then, so I kind of liked it as it is.

My room (301) was the one where Queen Elizabeth the Second stayed when she visited the colony according to the information of the hotel’s history I saw on the wall of the corridor. Awesome!

Only Reception area is renovated and looks great but the rest of the hotel is in poor condition, There was no hot water for bath, Broken windows and doors, Furniture very old,
Lots of Maintenance require, looks like management have no clue of Environment, Energy loses in the buildings.
