Very unique accommodations that's part of an art gallery. The proprietor (Thelma) and staff (Mateo) were both amazing and friendly and we chatted (via google translate). Thelma also made a beautiful breakfast!

The Modernistas hotel is a true gem. We're an American couple who were staying in Rio for one evening. The hotel is small, adorable, unique, and in a terrific area, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs within walking distance. It's also only a short cab ride to famous Rio destinations, including Ipanema, Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, etc.
Do keep in mind that this is a very unique establishment and won't be a good fit for some travelers. The rooms are bizarre (but in a good way!) and it's all old-school. For example, you get a set of keys for getting in and out of the place, with no keycards or other fancy systems. There's no room service, no full restaurant, no pool, etc. If you are looking for those types of things, this isn't the place for you.
If what you're looking for is a unique establishment to spend a nite or two at, this is a terrific fit. This is perfect for travelers like us who spend as little time as possible at the hotel and enjoy something different.
One more thing to note: the rooms have very, very high cielings and are cooled by a mini-split. With Rio's temps easily getting up to 100F, the little machine needs to work pretty hard to keep the room cool. We were comfortable, but if you want your room to be an icebox, you won't be happy.
Finally, the woman who owns/runs the place is incredibly sweet. We speak very little Portuguese and she speaks very little English, but she was patient and friendly while showing us the ropes. Would stay again!

My room was accessible in the foyer-like lobby adjacent to the art gallery. The door appears to be an extension and people may try to walk-in so best to look your door with a little turn-key in a key hole. My room was large and fit a king bed with room for a night stand a a desk. The bathroom was sizable also. There's a door covered in small mirrors that open to a very cute private patio. Also there are literary quotes printed on the walls from a popular author.

Hidden fees if check in late. Not only that while it is eritter R$50 for late check in, owner is not shy to charge $100 or more depending on customer. No one is available after 6pm and so you are on your own. Own claims to cancel my pre paid reservation eithout proper refund. Even Expedia still showed reservation to bevthere and that means that it is not acserious business or basically a scam depending n who you are. Nightmare, just avoid it at all costs.

The hotel is cute as it's located inside a gallery, but it's infested with mosquitos. We woke up every morning covered in bug bites. It was the only terrible hotel experience of our three-week trip. We got bitten nowhere else in the country except in this hotel so going back to our room was repeatedly unpleasant. Told the owners about it and they accused us of making it up. We would never stay there again.

This is a small hotel with comfy beds and cool style. We loved being in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood! We missed having a common room in the hotel, but the cafe and gallery are lovely.

Apart from being centrally located in a historic neighborhood with a lot of artistic flare, the staff are very welcoming here. I thankfully arrived to the hotel when there was an art walk. It was great to be there and visit all of the galleries, that the Modernistas Hotel participated in as well. I highly also suggest having the breakfast. It is really good! The staff were also really nice to provide us with clean towels every day and recommendations for what to visit in the area.

Beautiful boutique hotel in the artistic area of Santa Teresa. Friendly and accommodating hosts and delicious breakfast in an art gallery. Street-side rooms have street noises but nothing earplugs wouldn’t fix. We hope to get the chance to return.

I stay at many hotels. This is one of my new favorites. Small hotel. Bed and pillows were great. Stayed in room with balcony. Nice size room. Had bathtub. Water was hot. Very clean. Pay for the breakfast. It was great. Gourmet. Felt safe in the area. Police station is right up the road. Try Explorer Bar. Good food good price.

If you are looking for a cute and practical small venue with amazing food and hospitality, look no further than Modernistas. Our hostess was helpful and gracious. The room was unique but clean and comfortable. It is walking distance to restaurants and cafes, as well as several tourist spots. It is in a neighborhood and we felt safe.
The art gallery and art from local artists in rooms and common areas was a bonus.

What a fantastic hotel/gallery! This was an awesome base for our trip to Rio! It was our first time in Brazil and the people at this hotel were helpful in terms of where to go (and where not to go), experiences and highlights only locals would know about, recommendations! The breakfast (optional) was a three course event every morning that was the perfect start to the stay! Also this is a safe and nice and quiet area which is also another reason I would strongly recommend this place! Santa Teresa is a very pretty neighbourhood and if you like art/culture you cannot pass up the opportunity to stay at this hotel!!!!

This is a small family-run-type hotel, probably having 3-5 rooms, if that, for staying. It is some form of art house. And there is a gallery next to it. There are two ladies, Lorena & Thelma who run it and they are on site. They are delightful people. Lorena speaks good English, which is rare in Brazil and is ultra-helpful and nice. She showed me the ATM/cash machine on arrival which is nearby (the R$24 convenience fee of ATMs are ubiquitious, it seems, in Rio, at least). The rooms are clean, with good shower and very well-functioning air conditioning. The rooms are cleaned daily. They upgraded me to a bigger room, for my first night of stay, free of charge. They provide breakfast which is nice, but you need to pay: R$25. They also provide sandwiches and juices and a form of Brazilian/Portuguese chicken dish which is very nice. Thelma is the cook. The area is fantastic. I was there in the time of Rio Carnaval and the bloco in Santa Teresa was the best one. Lorena told me all about their times. The area is also nice to walk about and ask Lorena which parts to avoid as potentially unsafe. There is noise in the house, as people are busy doing things; but I was able to sleep until 11.30 am everyday, as I was coming very late from SambaDrome, so it was not bad. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay and Lorena and Thelma are fabulous and if it were possible, I would have rated it 10 out of 5.
