Old-house fanatics like us will take any opportunity to stay in homes turned hotels like this one. It is very cozy and welcoming despite ornate details at every turn. The staff and concierge team made us feel at home and were a great help coordinating special parts of our first visit to SF. A critical eye would find a few faults in the small details where properties go from good to excellent. During our stay we were often the only guests to be seen or heard, and the absence of bar service or their former in-house restaurant were small letdowns. Some elements of room prep are quirky for frequent travelers. None of that is a problem nor should it dissuade someone from staying. It’s in a safe area of downtown SF and close to anything worth seeing.

What was once a beautiful building now feels like a faded star. A sense of neglect lingers over the house. The rooms are clean and the bed comfortable but there is a lack of facilities which look like they used to be there but have been stripped out. Our room had a living room filled with seating and a sideboard with a tv point and a tv unit but no tv? No fridge in the room which is pretty essential when its mid summer in the city. No drinks facilities. There was an espresso machine on the ground floor but not self service and no sign of staff to operate it for you. Even at breakfast when the sad ghostly continental offer was laid out, we were left with an automatic coffee machine and the espresso sat unused. The bar held remnants of the past with half opened bottles of wine, old cans of beer and scattered glassware. When we asked for a glass of wine we were offered some of the opened bottle which was ancient and undrinkable. Asked for a beer instead but the fridge was broken... Why not clear it all away and make it clear the bar is closed, the next day the opened dusty bottle of wine was still sat there alongside several others... Overall it felt like the place was closed and we had snuck in, it was sad.

We stayed in this hotel for one night. This was our second time because we liked a lot our first stay. I would highlight 3 things about this hotel: 1) Friendly and helpful staff (Amanda and others). They went above and beyond to make us happy from making coffee, carrying luggages, opening parking doors, and most importantly having a pleasant conversation. 2) Beautiful art throughout the building. 3) Great location, walking distance to Japan Town and Fillmore shops and restaurants.
