The Space:
Samford Barton Farmhouse is the epitome of an idyllic countryside getaway. You’ll approach via country lanes surrounded by ponies, sheep and the rugged Dartmoor countryside. All is private and quiet, yet you’ll have access to the national park’s thousands of acres - with walks and cycling paths accessible from the door. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you on your stay, although we do ask that they are not left in the house alone and are kept downstairs and under control around livestock.
Step through the doors to find a space that’s homely and welcoming. The property retains much of its original charm, whilst ample modern amenities ensure ultimate comfort. Original features run throughout the rooms, including slate floors, sloping wooden floorboards and beams, as well as granite fireplaces and large sash windows. The farmhouse is Grade II listed. The kitchen, utility room, boot room and bedroom one date back to c1650 with many original features remaining, whilst the front of the house dates back to c1840.
The fully-fitted kitchen boasts a four-oven aga that’s perfect for putting a roast on whilst you head out for a walk. After long days out in nature, nothing beats settling into the cosy living room with the wood burner roaring and a film on the Smart TV. You will also find a large games room, dining room and garden room all on the ground floor. Starlink provides superfast internet (normally 100-300mbps depending on cloud cover) and there is a dedicated working desk in the garden room, ideal for anyone working remotely.
Upstairs, eight guests sleep across 4 well-sized bedrooms, 2 with spacious super kings beds, 1 king bedroom and 1 twin bedroom. There is also an additional exercise room, which is perfect for your daily pilates or yoga routine. The rooms share two contemporary toilet and shower rooms one downstairs, whilst the Master Bedroom has its own en-suite.
Guest Access:
Guests will have full access to the property.
The Neighborhood:
Samford Barton Farmhouse is located on a private, 155-acre estate in the hamlet of Sampford Spiney, Devon. It is situated on the lower slopes of Dartmoor National Park, surrounded by miles of wild, ancient woodland and countryside. All around, you will hear nothing but the gentle hum of nature. Set off on long walks or cycling trails straight from the door.
The village of Yelverton is just a short 10-minute drive away where you will find shops for essentials like a good butcher, small supermarket and cafes, whilst Tavistock is 12 minutes away where you can visit the Pannier Market, browse the shops, visit local landmarks or enjoy the local cafes, pubs and restaurants. Supermarkets can be found just beyond the town centre.
Dartmoor is a spectacular, vast moorland and one of the UK’s most beautiful National Parks. Trails wind through valleys, where you’ll find Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farmhouses. This area is renowned for its outdoor recreational activities - the nearby Burrator Reservoir provides a stunning backdrop for walking, cycling and fishing. Meanwhile, the moorland offers endless trails for hikers and nature lovers. The area is rich in wildlife, with sightings of wild Dartmoor ponies, deer and a variety of birds.
For thrill-seekers, there are opportunities to enjoy climbing, kayaking or wild swimming in the area’s many rivers and granite tors. Additionally, for golfers there are courses nearby or if you are a horse rider then why not try a hack on the Moor from the local riding centre.
Find more local tips and tricks in the Guest Guide, which is available upon booking.
Getting Around:
Due to the remote nature of this part of Dartmoor and nearby Cornwall, a car is recommended for getting the most out of your stay here. Or just park up and escape from the daily hustle and bustle, chill out and enjoy the privacy, peacefulness and tranquillity of the farmhouse. There is ample space on the drive and undercover in the pole barn to park as many vehicles as you need.
Other Things to Note:
For safety reasons, we do not recommend children under 10. This is because there is hard slate flooring throughout the downstairs
together with some small granite steps between rooms and also a small stream and other bodies of water on site which are not fenced off.
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate electric vehicle charging at this time, all EV charging is prohibited but Ohme EV Charger is coming soon. Zap Map can provide you with information on the closest charging location should you need it for the meantime.
Interaction with Guests:
We will be available via message, email and phone during your stay. Any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
