GETTING AROUND
For convenience, we recommend our guests reach the apartment by car. The apartment is about a 5-minute drive from the center of Menaggio. Public transportation is less convenient, although there is an ASF bus service, line C10, connecting Como to Menaggio; however, from the center of Menaggio, you will need to switch to another bus (ASF line C14) to reach the area where the apartment is located.
In Menaggio, you will also find the pier, where local ferries will take you to Como, Bellagio, Varenna, and other towns around the lake. Please note that in high season, there may be long lines at the ticket office. Tickets can also be purchased online on the Navigazione Laghi website. There is also a ferry that carries cars. From Como San Giovanni station, there are regular trains to Milan Central Station and Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno). From Como Nord Lago, there is a rail connection to Milan Cadorna. The nearest airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Orio al Serio in Bergamo. A direct shuttle service to and from the airport can be arranged at an additional cost. For further questions about transportation, do not hesitate to contact us: we will be happy to help and ensure you reach your preferred destination!
TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the wonderful towns around the lake. Como city is the urban center of the area, but the small towns are gems with beautiful lakeside villas.
When getting around and walking along Lake Como, especially in the small towns, comfortable shoes are essential.
There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also potable. You can bring your reusable bottle!
If you are looking for a relatively easy hike in the area and still want to enjoy mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is an easy-to-follow trail that connects the lake towns from Colonno to Griante and does not require too much climbing. A bus will take you to the starting point in Colonno.
Look for traditional restaurants to taste local dishes, such as those based on fish from Lake Como.
In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close in the middle of the day, so be sure to plan your purchases accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. However, for those who wish to take a dip, there are some options. There is a beach (lido) in Menaggio. Locals and visitors also love to go to Nesso, where the more adventurous swimmers can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido di Bellagio and the pebbly beach of San Giovanni await those who want to explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the two branches of the lake.
Lake Como is located in a mountainous region. The surrounding Prealps may not seem very high, but the climate is still influenced by the nearby mountains, and temperatures can change rapidly. Pay special attention to weather conditions during hikes and bring warm and waterproof clothing!
