The extraordinary England House, built in 1902 by the master stone cutter William England and Barbara Michelbach-England, has been carefully preserved for your family to enjoy. The red-and-white stone is locally quarried, and hand cut and the design of the home itself is unique. Barbara, a hard-working woman who was part of several societies and worked as a nurse, lived in the home for over 30 years and built it as a family home. When her husband died of strychnine poisoning, she was accused of his murder and later acquitted after only 20 minutes of deliberation. Her cousin, Steve Eck, moved to the area and finished the home with Barbara. Steve also had a hand in building the Church of the Nativity (one of the most famous buildings in Northern Arizona), the Harold Colton house, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and many structures on Northern Arizona University campus.
Settled right in the heart of Downtown Flagstaff, it is just blocks from the City Center. It is less than 20 minutes to Snowbowl Ski Resort, half an hour to Williams, Arizona. the Polar Express Experience, and Bearizona, 45 minutes to the stunning scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon to the grandeur of the Sedona red rocks, and only a 1 ½ hour drive to the South Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park!
Be welcomed to England House by a beautifully landscaped property. The traditional red and white sandstone home stands formidably at the front of the property. Past the front porch and front door, you will be transported back in time. The entryway boasts beautiful decor including Victorian era furniture. The entire home is filled with restored Louis XIV and XV French antiques. To your right, you will find the sitting room boasting a bay window seating area, three chairs and a couch. The built-in bookshelf and large armoire hold books, games, and DVD films for you to enjoy during your stay. DVD and Blu-Ray players are located in the living room and cellar. The wall mounted, flat screen TV is cable connected and has smart capabilities, allowing you to watch your favorite shows whenever you want!
The delightful kitchen sits beyond the sitting room. With modern amenities including a dish washer, double oven, stovetop, microwave, and refrigerator, you will feel right at home in this space. The cabinets are filled with beautiful, traditional china and glassware. Brew the perfect cup of coffee with our traditional coffee machine in the corner of the room, or perhaps make a cup of tea with the tea kettle nearby. With an abundance of amenities, this kitchen can make something to please everyone. Off the kitchen is the sun porch, a perfect area for the family to sit and relax in the mornings or enjoy a meal.
Under the stairs is the first of five bedrooms, all aptly named. The Pantry, once the actual pantry in the home, holds a queen pillow top-bed on an iron frame, two end tables with lamps, and a sizable private bathroom with a neo-glass and onyx walk in shower.
Up the stairs you will find three gorgeous rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms.
To your right, you will find Star Gazer and Song Catcher. Star Gazer is a fanciful room with a late 1800's French earring bedframe holding a Temper-Pedic queen sized bed. The small table and chair set to the right looks out on Mars Hill. The attached private bath has a jetted bathtub and neo-glass and onyx walk-in shower. Song Catcher is just across the hallway and is furnished with Louis XVI French antiques. A chair with a footrest sits in the corner and a table for two graces the bay window that looks out onto the front yard. This private bathroom has a traditional clawfoot bathtub and shower. Both beautiful bedrooms also hold wall-mounted, flat-screen smart and cable connected TVs for your entertainment.
The third upstairs bedroom, the largest of the three, is called Stone Cutter. With its own sitting room and gas stove, it's the perfect place to relax after a day of exploration. In the small private sitting room is a love seat, chairs, and a twin trundle bed nestled behind velvet red drapes. The bedroom is furnished with Louis XV French antiques and a comfortable TempurPedic queen bed. The private bathroom has a sizable walk-in shower.
The fifth bedroom is located in a beautifully renovated cellar. This large room has a fireplace, cozy chairs, a table with barstools. The bathroom boasts an antique claw-foot tub with shower option. The exquisite woodwork and pressed tin ceilings lend to the room's unique character. A final wall-mounted, flat screen cable connected smart TV is in this bedroom, along with a DVD and Blu-Ray player. The cellar bedroom is accessed by steep stairs which are not suitable for all parties. Use the cellar stairs at your own risk.
