With direct views over the Tagus and a fabulous terrace where you can wind down at the end of the day, this apartment is close to one of Alfama’s main streets. Yet it is quiet as it is located between a street with no traffic and pedestrian alleys leading down to the riverfront. With colorful interiors and close to all that matters in this fascinating quarter, you could not pick a better apartment for your short (or long) break in Lisbon.
DESCRIPTION
The apartment’s main feature is its privileged terrace overlooking the never-ending changes in the colors of the Tagus – from dawn to sunset -, and the misty, thin line of houses, backed by the Serra da Arrábida mountains, far across the river, on the south bank. The terrace is equipped with chairs and a table for meals and a patio umbrella to protect guests from what can sometimes be a blazing sun. All around the terrace are lovely rooftops and colorful façades. The apartment has 3 bedrooms (one of them windowless) and multicolored, modern interiors with lovely lace curtains in the bedrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped and the sun-drenched living room is connected to the terrace. The perfect accommodation for those who enjoy tradition, scenic views and proximity to cultural attractions.
NEIGHBORHOOD
The apartment’s location is perfect, not only as it is next to some national “jewels”, but also because it’s close to streets where the locals greet each other from balcony to balcony and buy food from nearby shops, many of which haven’t changed for decades! This is the true soul of Lisbon, a lively, fascinating quarter with layer upon layer of history.
This fascinating quarter is a unique combination of centuries-old monuments, craft workshops, hidden palaces, lovely corners, old-time cafés and hanging bougainvillea that bring color to white-washed walls and lively squares where you can have a lovely meal for a very reasonable price - sardines are typical, so don’t forget to eat some with the usual baked potatoes, grilled peppers, maybe a crème brûlée for dessert, accompanied by plenty of sangria (or wine). Fado restaurants and taverns are also numerous here, because Alfama is the true heart of Lisbon’s Fado, a song whose influences go back to the time of Arab occupation (8th – 12th century AD). Yet, it only became Portugal’s national song in the early 19th century, when the Portuguese royalty fell in love with it (as did everybody else). Since 2011, Fado has been considered part of UNESCO’s intangible heritage.
This is a neighborhood of people who chat from balcony to balcony, where they sometimes hang out their clothes to dry. Typical and traditional, Alfama is a soulful quarter where locals are intense, monuments are beautiful and the many streets and corners wonderful to photograph. This is probably Lisbon’s most romantic quarter. From here you can reach most of old, historic Lisbon on foot. On your way, you’ll also come across grocers, shoemakers and other artisans who have been selling their products for over 40 years! This is real, genuine Lisbon, the one most visitors fall in love with at first sight.
The apartment is within walking distance of some of Lisbon’s highlights: 5 min from the Fado Museum, the National Pantheon (where the Portuguese royal family and prestigious Portuguese are buried) and the convent of São Vicente de Fora; São Jorge Castle and the Sé Cathedral are about 10 min away; Praça do Comércio and downtown Rossio square no more than 20 min; aristocratic Chiado and alternative Bairro Alto quarters – about 25 min. Of course, you’ll also have to explore Belém – the museum quarter. So please take a bus or a tram and spend some time there. There’s loads to see in Belém!
Nearby, less than a 5 min walk away, runs the ultra-famous 28 tram line which passes through some of the city’s best historical areas, as well as Santa Apolónia metro and train station, which links Lisbon to all the major cities. The metro network reaches a good part of Lisbon. Metro and buses can also take you to Cais do Sodré train station, which serves the beautiful Cascais and Estoril summer resorts, or to Rossio train station, from where you can reach Lord Byron’s beloved town of Sintra.

Great communication, very clean, very attentive management. This place has a lot of old world charm and I would believe it if someone told me it was built in the late 1700's. :-) The very old hardwood floors are beautiful. The outdoor sitting space is gorgeous with an incredible river view. The decor is near perfect and the furniture is wonderful.
you'll find a ton of quaint restaurants and shops within steps of the front door.
Some realities: Two bedrooms are on the street side which is very noisy at night. There is a lot of traffic and loud people leaving the until well after midnight. A community garbage pick up point is right outside the front door and under two bedrooms. When they pick up at night, the sound is deafening.
One of the bedrooms has zero windows and the ceiling fan did not work for us.
While the river view was amazing, every day of our stay we had one or more gigantic cruise ships just outside on the river docks. The photos of the listing are old and dont' show the facilities but there are large loading/unloading ramps and elevated walkways to handle the cruise passenger traffic.
That being said, my family enjoyed our stay.

I absolutely loved the location of this property. Alfama is one of the older neighborhoods in Lisbon and is packed with life, lots of little shops, restaurants & bars wedged into little nooks & crannies up and down its narrow streets. There are a lot of hills, so be prepared for the occasional steep climb. But totally worth it, IMO.
The apartment itself was very nice, with three bedrooms and two baths with showers. Kitchen was bigger than others I've seen and also includes a washer for laundry. The front of the property offers two bedrooms a street view, while the living room in the back opens to a sizeable patio overlooking the water and narrow streets below. Truly a stunning view and worth the price of admission alone. The AC unit worked very well at keeping the space cool with the weather hot outside.
Hosts were very communicative and helpful in getting us into the property a bit early and provided some valuable info on sites to see in & around Lisbon and transportation options (hop on tram 28 at some point!). Keycodes provided made getting in and out a snap.
Overall, I loved Lisbon and the Alfama neighborhood in particular. Would rent this property again in a heartbeat.

The check-in process was smooth with lots of great information. The apartment was spotless and the terrace was definitely the highlight for us. The lounge area looked a little bigger in the pictures but was quite adequate. The third bedroom is windowless as mentioned in the description but being there in May, when it was not too hot, did work. Being an older apartment it does suffer a little with plumbing issues so keeping doors closed helped. This is a great apartment for exploring Alfama and the rest of Lisbon. We were happy with our stay.

Great location, super property, perfect for catching up with friends. The house has everything you need for a city break and is right in the heart of the old town in Alfama. Supermarket and restaurants on your doorstep. I would advise using the airport taxi rather than uber from the airport as the uber taxi can't drop you at the door and the streets are steep and cobbled and full of holes so my friend had trouble getting there with her luggage. The plus side of course is that uber is cheaper. She paid 11 euros, we paid 21 euros in the airport taxi. Highly recomend this property and this area of Lisbon.

This was a great location and apartment. It worked well for our group of 6.
Thank you!!

There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the sunrise and sunset on one’s terrace. We had a front row seat to that EVERY day! Our apartment was on a lively street. We became neighbors with shopkeepers, cafe owners and the local mercado clerks. The famous # 28 tram was close by, but learned from the locals it was better to take the Red tram rather than the yellow one. The train station was at bottom of hill and we took it to several cities outside Lisbon. The prices were reasonable and the adventures were wonderful.
Our hosts were OUTSTANDING! I have used VRBO for many stays across the world, and I will tell you that they are the Best!
A friend that was staying with us for a week of the three we were there, asked if we would ever go back and the answer is definitely YES! YES! YES!
Thank you for introducing us to such a beautiful city!

What a fantastic vacation! In early June, My sister-in-law, two nieces, and I had the pleasure of staying at Paula's place in the Alfama area of Lisbon. I was traveling from Singapore and arrived later than the others who came from the U.S., so they met Carlos for the check-in. They said he was great! He shared lots of tips that came in handy during our stay. The apartment was perfect for our needs. It overlooks a quaint street lined with excellent restaurants and bars, which can be quite loud as the night progresses, but the windows are equipped with additional closures that reduce the noise significantly. I preferred to fall asleep to the sounds of people partying and having fun right below my window.
The balcony at the rear of the building provides a beautiful view of the river and it was fun to watch the cruise ships come in and leave each day - all while overlooking the incredible tile roofs of the buildings surrounding us. We stayed for nine days and got to know the local restauranteurs and shop owners. They treated us like family. We hope to return to Lisbon, stay at Paula's place, and see our newly-made friends again! Thanks, Paula and Carlos, for the memorable stay in Alfama.

We absolutely loved our stay at this apartment, it was very comfortable and quite spacious by European standards. The view was spectacular and the neighborhood had many shops, bars and restaurants. We found ourselves ending the day near “home” before retreating to the terrace for a relaxing glass of wine while soaking up the ambiance. Would definitely stay here again

We have stayed in this unit for both of our trips to Lisbon. 2021 and 2022. Absolutely LOVE the location and the patio. We had some pretty severe stench in the unit due to the toilet releasing a sewage type odor. Maintenance did try to repair but it didn't help much. The TV was not working, which is fine because we don't spend much time watching TV in this beautiful city, but it should be operational. A unit as potentially beautiful as this, could definitely use some updating and renovation.
Still love it. Thanks for reaching out

There were 3 adults and the apartment was very accommodating for us. We weren't inside much during the day so we mainly enjoyed the terrace at night. There are restaurants, grocery markets and plenty of wine options just outside of the apartment. Fantastic location with much to see and do within walking distance. I would not hesitate to stay here again! Only demerit is the bed that I slept on...it was very low to the floor and no side tables, as space was limited.

This was exactly what we expected. Alfama apartments are generally smaller, but the best feature of this place is a great terrace patio with a fabulous view of the Tagus river and the sweep of the opposite shore. Really spectacular and we spent every evening there sharing stories, drinking in the view along with wonderful Portuguese wine.
One of our best vacations ever!

Firstly let me say that this property is in a good position for sight seeing. The roof terrace was quiet and with a good view. The guy who checked us in was also very friendly and even helped my husband when he was having trouble booking some tickets. We are very grateful for this. The property was clean.
I then have to point out we are a family group of seven adults and we stayed during a heatwave.
Unfortunately not all was good.
We found the property a bit tired. For example our bedroom door handle was broken meaning we couldn’t shut the door at all. Although it advertises as having air conditioning this is only in the small lounge and there is none in the kitchen or bedrooms. It was knock out heat in the bathrooms too.
None of us could sleep due to both the heat and noise. Lots of shouting in the street at night. We have stayed in lots of city apartments (just this year in Rome, Barcelona and Budapest) so we expect a bit of noise but this was pretty bad. If you opened the windows (which we had to) you could not sleep. There was often the thud of the drumbeat from the music from the cafe directly below us too.
When we arrived we realised that the beds in the bedroom with no windows at all, have legs that wobble all over the place. As our daughter has a serious back condition, we did not think she should sleep here so my husband and I took this room. The door does not open more than the length of a ruler as the bed is in the way and as I’ve said, it doesn’t shut either. There was no air in the heat at all. All the bedrooms were much to hot.
Despite all the noise the roof space remains quiet which is where we were when it wasn’t too hot to be out there. However the furniture is not comfortable to sit on sadly.
The lounge has the only comfortable seating and that’s a sofa for two. The rest of the chairs are not for relaxing in.
I nearly always give five star reviews, but given the price we paid and even taking into account the fact that cities are more expensive, we were disappointed with our accommodation. There definitely needs to be air conditioning in the bedrooms at the very least.

Wonderful getaway for 30th!
This place was cozy and very well situated for our 30th birthday trip. The views are stunning from the back patio and the location is really fun for grabbing dinners and exploring the area. Also very convenient for our train to Porto. 5 gals fit in the each of the single beds, which was just fine. Maybe stronger fans would have been helpful- very European but without AC in bedrooms it’s a trade off for shielding light when you sleep, letting air in, or closing windows for also protecting noise. Otherwise wonderful stay!

Nestled in a safe neighbor, we had an amazing stay filled with great food, cozy cafes, and wonderful, kind people. The view of the Tagus River is unsurpassed. We will definitely book here again.

We had a great stay in Lisbon largely due to this property. Located in the heart of Alfama, near Santa Apolonia station, you are in the perfect spot to explore the city. Because of the exceptional weather, we spent every evening on the patio as the sun went down. Communication with the host was fantastic. A word of warning that does not affect the overall rating, this is on a popular street and there will be street noise until 3:00. We are used to city living so it wasn't really a bother for us but, if you are a light sleeper, take ear plugs. Don't let it keep you from staying in this excellent property.

Amazing apartment with beautiful terrace!
We couldn't have been happier with our stay here. It was on the most perfect cute street with tons of friendly people working in the shops. Beautiful spacious terrace (which is hard to find in Lisbon) that overlooked the water and buildings. Great location walking distance to a ton of sights, restaurants, shopping, etc. We'd love to stay here again!

Mooie locatie in autovrij deel van Lissabon. Niet heel groot en hier en daar verouderd. Een slaapkamer zonder raam maar leuk dakterras. Prima om van hieruit Lissabon te verkennen.

Lovely apartment with great views
We enjoyed our stay and spent every morning and evening enjoying the great views from the terrace. Adriano met us on arrival and provided us with all the information we needed to get around the city and explore. As Americans, we like a good shower, and the hot water was plentiful despite four of us using the two bathrooms. The bedrooms were comfortable, though two of the three are on the small side so I would not recommend more than 4 adults. There are nice touches, including a welcome bottle of wine, hair dryers and even an iron (!) which came in handy after two weeks of traveling in the countryside.
The Alfama is a great old historic neighborhood, but unfortunately has become a lot more touristy of late due to the arrival of large cruise ships etc. Still, you can easily walk to Pracio Commercial, the castle, etc. and are a short bus ride from Belem.

Location, location, location
The appartment was exactly as described and the views from the balcony even better. It was really nice to eat breakfast at the balcony and have a glass of wine there in the evening. The property is well-maintained and really well equipped. The location of the appartment is superb! Couldn't be any better, everything you need is within walking distance. Customer service before arrival and during our stay was excellent. Fatima and the rest of the team answered to our messages really fast and made us feel that they really care about their customers. Jose did our check-in and we got some great restaurant tips and suggestions what to see in Lisbon. It was our first time in Lisbon and we all fell in love with the city and the food. Also the local people are really friendly. We would definitedly book the appartment again. We would suggest taking earplugs with you if you wake up easily because of noices. The building is old so the sound proofing is not the best in the world, but that's something we new beforehand and it wasn't a problem to any of us (we didn't need the earplugs). You might hear some noices from the staircaise or from the street when they are emptying the trashbins.

Fabulous apartment in a vibrant area
We found the apartment clean and very well mentioned. We arrived at lunch time and were allowed an early check in. Both Fatima and Daniel were very friendly and helpful, providing lots of information about the city etc. The apartment had a fantastic view of the river from the roof terrace - the sunrises were spectacular. The area was vibrant with lots of bars and restaurants around. I would thoroughly recommend a stay in this apartment.

Lovely apartment for a short break in Lisbon
The apartment was nice and in a great location. There were 6 of us (all adults) and we found that we had enough room for 4 nights, although 2 of the bedrooms were quite small. The terrace really made the apartment and we used it throughout our stay. The owners were helpful and accommodating. I would certainly recommend staying here whilst exploring Lisbon.

Out home in Alfama
We spent 5 nights in the apartment located in Rua de Remedios, one of the main streets of the historic center of Lisbon. Arriving in the Alfama and having a sight from the apartment exactly the same as it’s reported in the pictures, is really breathless. The property is clean, you can’t expect a very modern one in the Alfama, but it’s well maintained.
