History of Glendevon
Although we're not sure exactly how old Glendevon is precisely we have a documentary records dating from the early 19th century up to the present day
We know that the cottage has been inhabited by a succession of families working in seafaring and mining - industries and occupations of importance to the local area. Glendevon is a genuine fishermens' cottage
The profession of Master Mariner features in the ownership records commentary - a Master Mariner was the highest qualification possible in the Merchant Navy
Local Staithes names are connected to the cottage - Ward - Shippey - Crooks - Theaker
In 1861 Glendevon had 3 residents - this had risen to 8 in 1871 and included a young girl as a house servant - Sarah Crooks, and a lodger Ann Theaker
In 1881 one of the sons of the household Matthew Ward was at sea and is recorded as serving on the 'True Love' a fishing vessel from Whitby manned by Staithes fishermen
By 1911 Matthew was in the fish business on his own account as a Hawker owning his own horse and cart. It is not hard to imagine Matthew shouting his wares on 'The Staithe' then delivering orders by horse drawn transport to local villages

We loved our stay in Staithes. The cottage is in the centre of the cute, quaint and dog friendly seaside village. The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and Anne was very helpful with setting up a travel cot and advising where best to park. We highly recommend staying here, and when you do make sure to visit Betsy & Bo!

Loved the location, good communication and check in process. The way it was listed led to some confusion re ammenities and upstairs shower needed a more thorough cleaning but overall we enjoyed our stay.

This was a lovely cottage in the beautiful village of Staithes. Had everything needed for a comfortable stay, the biscuits were a nice touch. I did feel it could have been cleaner, it didnt really bother me but if you are a clean freak it might.

Glendevon cottage is well equipped and well positioned with a sea view plus the Cod and Lobster pub and small beach nearby. Staithes is a very picture postcard place but be prepared for some hill climbs, there are many alleyways to explore and a stroll around the village is well worth while, cross the bridge near the Royal George pub onto Cowbar and enjoy the views.

Staithes is mine and my partner's favourite place in the UK. We have stayed in Staithes a few times now and I can honestly say I would recommend this cottage to anyone. The location is perfect with a bit of a sea view from the bedroom window. The cottage has a lovely cosy feel to it, beds are really comfy and has everything you need for a short/ long stay. Thank you Anne!

Superb location. Cottage has everything we needed, comfortable and cozy.

Quaint property no more than 100 metres from the beach and pub/restaurant. Efficient check-in arrangements. On the whole, a very enjoyable stay. If walking to the car parks, turn right when exiting the cottage and follow the path. Walk is only a few mins and gradient quite gentle compared to the road.

It was very quaint and superb as a ‘little home’ to come back to, at the end of the day. Lovely warm and snug, particularly when we sat down to an open fire.. lovely treat. Beds comfy and warm… just what you need for a break away!! Ps bonus was a few yards away is a pub, which accommodates food intolerances. Why go anywhere else!!

Great cottage fantastic location. We did struggle to park in the carpark which surprised me as we are regular visitors to Staithes and have never had a problem in peak times.

Staithes cottage.
Cosy cottage close to beach. Steep narrow stairs and limited room in shower rooms. Sunny sitting area at front but not enclosed if you have dogs.
