About this cottage rental
'The Cabin' is a pretty, coastal, two bedroom cottage on West Mersea Island, Colchester, Essex, England. It is a few steps to the sea on a much sought after quiet lane. There are beautiful beach walks and bike rides. Stop on the way at Dukes Sea Food, Seafood at Dawn, The Coast Inn, White Hart or the infamous Company Shed for some fabulous fresh fish either to take home or eat in.
The cottage sleeps 6 in two good sized bedrooms, one with a Super King size bed and Tempura mattress & and one with a King size double and a bunk bed, only children on the top bunk please). Black out blinds in both rooms and so so quiet... Watch for the red squirrels in the garden in the early morning.
The bathroom is upstairs and has a large walk in shower cubicle.
The kitchen is well equipped and has bright seaside design which continues into the comfortable living room. It has a small enclosed private courtyard garden which is a sun trap in the summer and out of the wind during the colder months.
Well behaved dogs are welcome, there is a gate and hose in the back garden for muddy paws.
There are two sailing clubs close by, a Stand up Paddleboard and windsurfing rental shop and Fishing trips are available.
Coming to Mersea is a little like stepping back in time, well known for it's traditional sailing and fishing boats. There is a nature reserve on the other side of the island and a perfect spot for walking, birdwatching or photography. You can also have the use of the two man kayak for a small extra fee.
There is a smart TV with use of Netflix and Amazon Prime (payment per view).

Great Location
Overall lovely house lots of lovely quirky bits, just a couple of grubby bits. Small garden quite overgrown making it hard to walk up the steps, the wooden bench outside starting to rot. None of this detracted from our enjoyment, obviously the great weather helped 😎

Quiet position but easily accessed. Keen sailing family's genuine holiday home. Cosy feel but good size rooms with everything you'd need and thoughtful touches on arrival. Room for 6 but only 2 bedrooms, 2nd bedroom with 4 bunk beds. Private sun-trap courtyard.

End of summer break
Lovely house. Very well equipped for adults and children. Brilliant location for the harbour. Part of a small group of modern houses but very quiet and relaxing. A couple of very minor cleaning issues easily resolved

I grew up on Mersea and wanted to return with my teenagers. The cabin was perfect for us, both in location and layout. We loved its homely feel and would definitely recommend.

We chose this location as it is close to family in Colchester who we hadn’t been able to see for many months. Having spent my childhood in Essex I can’t believe that I didn’t know about the island. I absolutely loved it and hope to return. The cottage is perfectly located and has everything we could have wanted. It feels like a home as soon as you arrive. We unfortunately managed to lock ourselves out one day and it was dealt with extremely promptly. Thank you

A real cosy cottage that feels light and airy, with every home comfort. Within walking distance of the coast and all the walks that the island has to offer. Great food in the locality, from traditoonsl fayre to seafood specialities. Loved our week.

Family trip
Fantastic experience from start to finish! Arrived to radio on, windows open, fresh flowers and snacks, milk, butter etc.
The Cabin is absolutely delightful, so welcoming and plenty of storage space so you can unpack, get rid of the suitcases and feel at home.
Emma was very responsive if we had any questions although there was a comprehensive book with lots of info about the cabin and facilities in the surrounding area.
Absolutely loved our 2 week stay and we will definitely be back. Thank you!

Amazing house close to the sea
The pictures don’t do it justice. It’s a fully kitted out house with 2 bedrooms (1 kingsize, the other with 4 bunk beds), big kitchen, living room, bathroom and garden (where, if you’re lucky, you can see the red squirrels). It’s very close to the sea and all the local seafood places, plus a fair few pubs. Really enjoyed our stay and loved checking out the local area.

Short break
Clean, comfortable, stylish and spacious cottage. Excellent base for walking, cycling, kayaking and boat trips. Within less than five minutes walk there are plenty of lovely places to eat and watch the sunset. Turn right at the harbour for a wonderful walk along the water towards the Strood. The cottage itself is tucked away down a quiet and idyllic lane with easy parking if you come in two cars.
Highly recommended this cottage and the Island. We have come away with wonderful memories and some fantastic photos! Have already recommended this cottage to friends and family. Thank you Emma for your attentive communication and comfortable stay. Chris and Gill

Great little house by the sea
Lovely location, a stones throw to the waterfront, in a beautiful quaint lane.
The house had everything we needed and the owner added extra homely touches too. It was cosy yet spacious at the same time. A real seaside vibe.
We came with our dog and had some nice walks.
We visited the vineyard on Mersea island and got some good wine too.

Cottage by the sea
The Cabin is a dear little cottage just a few yards up a quaint lane off the shore. It is light and airy, quiet and with beautiful, nautically-themed decor.

Will definitely stay again if available.

Perfect holiday house
This is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday. The house is so comfortable, well equipped, cosy and welcoming. Extra touches for dogs were much appreciated too. It's location is great - a couple of minutes from the waterfront for walks and seafood. We loved it and hope to return.

Lovely coastal town - great walks and fab seafood
Great place to stay for a week. Very peaceful and the cabin had everything we needed. It was warm and cosy and great place to chill after a long walk along the beach. Back entrance to garden and hosepipe ideal for washing down sandy dogs before taking them inside. West Mersea is lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our daily walk along the beach. The Lane is a great location as very quiet yet only 2 mins from the sea front and the only a few more minutes walk to lovely pub/seafood cafe....The Coast Inn and both seafood cafes along the front are fab but my favourite was Mehalahs - a 5 min drive from the Cabin - where the seafood was the best I’ve ever had. A truly relaxing break :-)

Delightful cottage in lovely location
Well appointed cottage in good location for the seafood restaurants and walks along the estuary. Added bonus of enjoying owner’s paintings. Thank you.

Perfect House!
I booked this house for two nights with my three kids. The house is very well presented, tastefully decorated with everything you need supplied. It also has a small garden which catches the sun. The best thing about this house is the location, it is situated on an old lane with ancient cottages that gives it so much charm. It’s a stone’s throw from the waterfront marina which has many fantastic seafood restaurants and a great pub, The Coast Inn.
We booked a private kayaking lesson with Mark from Mercy Island watersports, it was great fun kayaking around saltmarshes.
We also hired bicycles and cycled around the island which is the best way of seeing the area.
We also had picnics on the beach which was lovely. The beach is clean and does not get too busy. There are also some beach huts which you can hire.
All in all it was great short break on Mersea Island and can’t wait to go back.
Thank you!

Lovely comfy house
We had a fantastic week, thoroughly enjoyed West Mersea and surrounding areas. We went to, hopefully, see the Thames Barges as I wanted to paint them. They were sailing in the bay so I was happy
The house was very comfortable and well equipped, only I’m afraid, let down by the cleaners as the shower was not clean, in fact I had to clean out the plug hole before using, a shame as otherwise we were really happy
We ate in the pub which had very good food and picked up shell on prawns and fish pate for picnics
A lovely week, thank you

Warm, cosy and comfortable and clean
We really enjoyed our short break staying at the cabin. It felt a home from home.
Everything we needed and more. The situation of the cabin was in the prettiest part of West Mersea and close to the beach, nice walks and the town.
Thank you Emma for a lovely stay.

Wonderful weekend
The property is a very short stroll to the water and Mersea island is wonderful. All the rooms are tastefully furnished and all the equipment you need is there and I slept like a top in the comfortable bed but the best thing is the atmosphere of the property its just soooo relaxing and even our dog who can be a a bit nervy relaxed straight away in fact she didnt want to leave at the end of our stay but then none of us did. The garden is enclosed and a suntrap and we had a wonderful weekend and hope to return.

Seaside peace and quiet
Cute, seaside cottage with a nautical theme throughout. Much of our stay was conducted on foot, Mum, Dad, 8 year old and not quite 2! The Lane is quiet and relaxed. People of West Mersea are lovely; very friendly. The Cabin is comfortable and well equipped and so close to everything you may need. We did not want to leave!
