About this house rental
Imagine this...you are sitting in the jungle, the trees are huge, towering above you, the forest is alive with the chatter of birds and insects, big blue butterflies glide lazily around you. The air is damp and smells like the earth after a good rain. You are connected to the nature around you, at peace...tranquil!
This is how you will feel when you stay at Casa Pericos (House of Parrots). A wonderful tropical two story A-frame home nestled among the mango, papaya and coconut palms on a hillside overlooking Carrillo Bay. Sitting on the covered lower or upper sundeck, surrounded by 2.5 acres of tropical splendor, you are alone with the birds, butterflies, iguanas and howler monkeys! You are one with nature. You can observe flocks of parrots (yellow naped amazons and smaller orange fronted parakeets), motmots, trogons, kiskadees and an array of different birds flying by at any given moment. In the mangroves below the crescendo of birds, frogs, crickets and other creatures is quite melodious. At night you can sit and watch the bats zipping around your head, devouring the unsuspecting insects, see the geckos scampering after moths and chirping loudly for mates, and in the distance watch the blinking lights of the fire flies. The longer you sit the louder everything becomes! From our large new upper deck, you can enjoy the sun during the day and watch the spectacular stars at night.
Although Casa Pericos is very private and secluded, it is a mere 5-10 minute walk downhill to Carrillo Beach. This is one spectacular white sand beach lined with coconut palms and warm, gentle surf and untouched by any buildings whatsoever, acclaimed by the guidebooks to be among the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. The 3 kilometer long crescent beach is protected by a coral reef which keeps the waves small and is a great beach for families with children. It is a popular beach for surfing, boogie boarding, kayaking, sunbathing, swimming and relaxing. It is also the place to be when the sun sets over Carrillo Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A brilliant, magical experience!
Food, Shopping, Local Activities: Hungry? A 10 minute walk up the hill and you're in the center of town. A quaint little fishing village which hosts several good restaurants and three little grocery/liquor stores. For something a little more happening take a 10 minute local bus or cab ride into Samara where you will find several waterfront restaurants, live music, water sport rentals, several internet cafes, two banks with ATMs, tourist shops, two surf schools plus massage and language schools.

Incredible view and location.
So many positives about the property! This large home was perfect for our family vacation over Christmas week as it allowed us plenty of bedrooms and baths. Watching the sunset from the decks of the home or from Carrillo Beach was magical. The beach really is only a 10 minute walk, down to the beach and uphill to the house! The kitchen is well appointed and has a huge island, very much appreciated. The property manager, David Ortega, could not have been more helpful and responsive to a couple of problems we had and to set up tours for us through his company, Samara Adventure Company.
However, although every place we stayed in Costa Rica had a few ants, this house clearly needs some attention to ant control. In addition, many of the bath towels are stained or just beaten up and should be replaced. The bathrooms also could use some updating.
All in all, we very much enjoyed our stay at Casa Pericos, but we hope that the owner will give it some needed attention.

Top place
Wonderful place, more spacious than it looks in the photos, with amazing views over forests to the coast. Nicely sitting in very quiet location close to the beach - and once one has detected the village close by, one doesn’t even have to go to Samara for lunch or dinner ;-). We can thoroughly recommend renting David’s property.

Good stay but with some frustrations knocking it from a 5 star to a 3 star stay - needs repairs
Could be a great rental, but I didn’t like spending my time trying to fix their appliances. Owner lives in US; manager (in Samara) replied to texts in 5 to 30 minutes. At check-in, upstairs AC was leaking water, so we weren't able to sleep in the room I wanted (the only one with a view of the bay). Within 24 hours the AC was sort of repaired. By that time we had spent the night downstairs and didn't feel like moving rooms, or climbing stairs every time we needed something. The repair man said the solution would be to replace a major part, or the entire AC unit, neither of which was done. So, after our kids moved into that room, the unit continued to leak a lot of water. AC still needed repair when we left. Now I see another June 2019 renter reported the same, known issue. Why not just replace the unit already? The clothes dryer also didn’t heat up, and that repair man offered the goofy solution of being sure to slam the dryer door extra hard because a plastic toggle is broken. This worked about 3 out of 4 times, causing further frustration. Again, why not just replace the broken part? As pointed out in a July 2017 review, the couch was very uncomfortable due to the worn-out cushions. Kitchen has only 3 barstools, so to eat a meal for 6 indoors, we had to use patio chairs and eat from our laps. We saw crabs, iguanas, geckos, and birds, but not a single monkey. Paradise-type beach, but waves can be surprisingly rough (it’s easy to get flipped upside down by waves and even dragged along the bottom – my younger son got a forehead sand-burn from that, and my wife had her leg wrenched in its socket). Still, we loved this beach. This is “one of the best beaches for children” in the whole country, according to multiple sources – but CR isn’t exactly known for having the best swimming beaches in the region; it’s a wildlife destination. We had great fun at the beach; just keep in mind your skill level, and that this is the Pacific Ocean. Ate at Soda La Plaza a lot. A rental car would make life easier. Taxis to town were about US$10. No AC in kitchen or living area means it will be very, very hot noon to 4pm. Loved the outdoor shower, modern kitchen, wi-fi, and dryer (the times that it worked), DVDs and CDs. I’m torn over leaving just 3 stars – probably the lowest review this place has had – but I think it’s necessary to point out that not everything is working properly in this house, and for the price we paid, it should have been.

Good Property
We were 2 families of 4. Kids ranging from 8-11. The house was plenty big to fit all of us. The views from the property are spectacular and the beach is close. We did not walk to it, we drove each day. Beach is so nice and clean. We played there for hours every day. The house has a couple iguanas that must live close and would be waiting for us each morning to come out and feed them fruit. The kids loved it!
I did have to contact the property management cause one AC line was clogged and the AC was dripping into the house. They were very prompt and sent someone out first thing in the morning and got it fixed.
The only negatives of the property for us were that the beds are pretty hard and the living room furniture is also pretty hard.

Dream Vacation!
The house was beautiful and met all of our needs. There were nine of us staying and there was more than enough room of all of us. Fantastic location walking distance to a beautiful beach, several lovely restaurants and small grocery stores that carried most things that we needed. Special thanks to David at the Samara adventure company for showing the first arrivals around the area and coming promptly (At 8pm in the evening!) when we had a small problem with one of the air conditioners. He and his staff at the Samara Adventure Company were also was very helpful setting up excursions for us and helping us to find drivers to get us to and from Samara.

Perfect spot for two families with young kids
Our stay at Casa Pericos was fantastic. The location is perfect; walking distance to the beach (we brought two collapsible wagons for hauling stuff as there is a bit of a hill and and it's a dirt road) and to restaurants and the grocery store. We wanted a place we could stay without a rental car, and Casa Pericos was perfect!!
The house itself is a bit rustic, which was just what we wanted; just know what to expect. The kitchen isn't fancy but is totally functional. We loved having a safe to store our passports and valuables while we were at the beach. The house takes advantage of the amazing view and its natural surroundings. We loved sitting on both decks and greeting the wildlife and "hola" parrots next door.
Both Davids (owner and property manager) were very helpful and kind. One night the power went out and David came to check on us to make sure we had flashlights etc. We definitely recommend his company, Samara Adventure Co. for airport transfers and any excursions you want to do. We hope to have the chance to stay here again!

Can Not Wait To Return
Casa Pericos is everything all the reviews we read said it was. The house is spacious, comfortable, and very well equipped. The animals refuge next door was a nice plus. We spent a week here and the days just flew by. We were three couples ages 60-70's and walked everywhere. The beautiful Playa Carrillo was wonderful and we spent most of our days enjoying the sun and sand, exploring the beach from one end to the other. Trip advisor directed us to a couple of beaches that we were able to hike to through the jungle on a dirt road. We were the only people there. Wow! And yes the sunsets did not disappoint. Even though the community is small we were able to eat at a different soda or restaurant every night and the food was wonderful.

Delightful and dreamy!
Our family vacation to Casa Pericos lived up to every expectation that we had before our arrival. The house is roomy and well laid out. There was plenty of room for all 9 of us to enjoy our family vacation (3 generations). Our granddaughters were absolutely thrilled with the howler monkeys climbing on the trees 30-50' away. They didn't even complain when the monkeys woke them up at 5 AM a couple of mornings, haha. We would go up on the upper deck with them and watch all the activity....the monkeys, hummingbirds, parrots, etc. They loved it and so did we! The small zoo next door had a parrot that called out "hola" repeatedly in the morning and kept the little girls giggling.
The kitchen at Casa Pericos has everything a guest could conceivably need and more. We only used the air conditioning in the bedrooms and toughed out the heat in the living room and kitchen (it was 90 degrees all week). We drove rather than walked down to gorgeous Carillo Beach and swam 1-3 times a day (nighttime swims under the full moon are highly recommended :-) The surf was a bit rough 3 out of the 6 days, but when we went out a little farther, the surf was very manageable and we just bobbed up and down. Our daughter and son-in-law went snorkeling out on the right side of the beach and saw a sting ray, a turtle and tons of fish near the reef. Our toddler granddaughter was in heaven using the pails and shovel provided at the house, not only at the beach, but also collecting loose stones along the driveway. Sweet!
Samara is a cool town, and we'd recommend Gusto Beach for a fun dinner out (we went the last night). Roots Bakery had delicious bread and pastries, Franks was a nice stop for a quick bite or drink (kind of a local hangout). The little town of Carillo is nice too, small and quaint. We bought local dorado (mahi-mahi) there to grill for dinner one night. Delicious.
We've all agreed that we'd like to go back to Casa Pericos before long. I wouldn't hesitate to book it for a vacation; I don't think you'll have any regrets whatsoever!

WOW - Amazing property and perfect beach!
The sunset was our entertainment. The kitchen has good equipment for making your our food if you wish. The house Is spacious with large porch and open deck on second floor for night sky viewing (or sunning).
Two of the top rated restaurants in the area on the dirt road where the house is located. Don’t let the outside of Chez Nou French restaurant fool you. Inside is a hidden gem with wonderful chef and owner making mouthwatering meals. Also up the hill is Cabinas El Colibri steakhouse with open coal grilling. Easy walk but take a flashlight.
You can also walk to the beach or take your car. We always have a lot of gear. The beach is beautiful with palm trees for shade and a few cement tables and benches for picnicking. My husband and I spent so much time in the water. Usually gentle surf in this protective cove.
David Foster the beach house owner and David (from Samara Adventure) the on-site manger were both responsive to our needs.
Goodbye Player Carrillo hope to return in the future.

Great location
This was our second visit to Playa Carillo. For a family this little beach town is just great. The beach is wonderful and uncrowded. The area is full of wildlife and interesting walks. You can walk to various little grocery stores and restaurants so you don't have to depend on a car like many VRBO rentals in more remote locations. We have explored all the beaches between Punta Islita and Nosara and Carillo just hits the sweet spot for families. If you want nighlife and loads of backpacker types go to Samara. If you want hidden exclusive Yoga resorts go to Nosara. But for a family beach vacation Carillo is the place.
We ate a lot of meals at Soda La Plaza, a nice Costa Rican cafe in front of the soccer field that serves great traditional Costa Rican fare. We did all our tours with Carillo tours (horseback riding, kayaking, sea turtle night tours, snorkeling) and can recommend them.
The house itself is large and functional and set well off the street on a secluded lot with a view of the ocean below. The walk to the beach is 4-5 minutes down a gravel road. We had monkeys, raccoons, squirrels, iguanas, and a wide variety of birds visit daily.
The place is pretty much as shown in the pictures. Two bedrooms and two baths below. Two bedrooms and a half bath above. The kitchen is functional. We mostly used the gas range for cooking. Did not try the outdoor grill. The WiFi is DSL and not super fast. It is adequate for surfing, email, texting, even face time calls to the US. But it isn't quite fast enough for reliable video streaming. My kids did netflix and youtube quite a bit but it's just a step to slow to avoid buffering so don't count on lots of movie watching online.
The only major complaint we had and the reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the furniture just isn't very comfortable for a vacation house. Neither my wife nor I really found any comfortable place to just lounge and read. The living room furniture is old bamboo furniture with old cushions that just isn't very comfortable for lounging about with a book. The patio furniture is mostly hard wooden stuff that again, is fine for sitting for a spell but you just can't really get comfortable. There are several hammocks and hanging chairs but those really didn't work for me. I'd suggest investing in a set of more comfortable living room furniture to bring this house up to grade for an international vacation rental. And maybe some nice rocking chairs on the patio.

Perfect family house
The house was so lovely for our family (9 people total). We cooked our meals in the spacious kitchen and ate on the porch. Both the host and the property manager on site were responsive and accommodating, making everything easy for us. My 10 year old son was heartbroken to have to leave this wonderful home! Thanks so much for a great stay!

Really great place
Everything was as easy as could be. The owner was very responsive to some initial questions.
Upon arrival we were met and given a tour of the house and a demo on how to operate everything. The kitchen is really nice with modern appliances and a big granite island. There is ac in the bedrooms that was nice to use, but some nights we just slept with the fan and windows open (all windows have screens and security bars). In short, it's a very nice house.
The view is terrific and the property makes you feel like you're all alone, even though there are other houses around. It's very peaceful to sit on the porch and listen to the sounds.
The nearest beach and town are laid back. There's more of a Tico feel than tourist feel, which was what we were looking for.
One thing to note was that one night the wifi stopped working so I called the property manager on the house phone. They were very responsive and made the call to the company, set up the appointment for the repair, and waited for the technician to show up to repair. We knew this was going to be happening while we were out exploring the next day so it was not an inconvinience at all. When we returned that night the wifi was repaired and all the trash cans were emptied. I believe that this small gesture demonstrates the property managers attention to detail and true care for the renters. Sure, it's not a big deal to empty the trash cans but, hey, we were on vacation and it was one less chore to deal with! So thanks again if you're reading this.

Perfect house for a family getaway
We had a very pleasant stay at Casa Pericos during the last week of March. The house is nice, fully equipped and clean and the view from the front deck is beautiful. Playa Carillo is a quiet village with a nice beach which is way less crowded than Samara beach. There are good restaurants within walking distance of the house. We will definitely go back !

Good Value for Close to Beach in Beautiful Carrillo
This house is a great deal for a bigger family.
We were 3 generations, from 1.5 to 62 years old.
Given the price, it's a really good value.
The house is located just a 5 min walk on the road, though it's pretty hilly and dusty in the heat, and my dad opted to drive a few times with a little one).
The Carrillo beach is postcard perfect. Probably one of the nicest around.
There is an area shielded by rocks that's good for the kids, no waves at all.
Absolutely safe and not crowded.
There is a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need.
Very good AC in the 2 lower bedrooms; one of the bedrooms upstairs -- was much warmer, but we were during the week when it was close to 100 degrees.
Both the owner and his caretakers Nick and Frank were extremely responsive with whatever issues arose.
We appreciated their attempts to resolve and attend to whatever needed.
The house shares a fence with a zoo so it's a riot getting welcomed by talking parrots.
It's not as luxurious as some of the villas in Costa Rica but I think the owner prices the house for a really good value.
The House is not ideal if you have a rambunctious toddler. The 2 level porch has a pretty steep falling so you can't leave your young ones unattended on the porch.
Overall, a great place.
If you do rent it, make sure to stop by the Roots Bakery in Samara before 8:30 am -- some great baked items.
Buying fresh fish in Pescaderia in the village right before the entrance to Samara was a great way to make dinner on the grill.
And please, eat the mangoes -- they are heavenly.

Simply fabulous!
We have just returned from Casa Pericos to NY and all I keep thinking about is "when can I return".
Myself and my four adult children stayed for eight nights. It was just the perfect accommodation for us all to have our own rooms and a wonderful deck to relax on in the noon day heat, and to watch the spectacular sunsets. It was very clean and very comfortable. Very true to description.
David, the owner was easy to communicate with; timely in responses and very helpful with advanced information which made our trip in a rented car from Liberia International Airport effortless.
Nick, the property manager, who met us at the house was a delight in all ways. A generous, helpful, pleasant person who left us alone to our holiday but was easily accessible if needed. In fact, my son left his passport behind and Nick took care of it without fuss and without stress.
Most mornings were spent taking the walk to the beach (5mins), swimming and walking the quiet crescent. A lovely way to start the day. In the afternoon it was rest in the warm, hot sun. Listening to the howlers, spotting the iguanas, and marveling at the diversity of plants and trees; animals and birds.
Later afternoon was back to the beach, watching the sunset (around 5.30pm) and more swimming.
All the restaurants we ate at were wonderful. All previously recommended by David in the packet he sent prior to our arrival. Shopping in town was simple and we were able to make delicious fresh meals on the barbecue on the deck. The kitchen was well stocked and easy to manage.
We went on a hike with Alvaro at Werner Sauter Biological Preserve which should not be missed. It was informative and fun and it seems that Alvaro himself is well known for his warmth and kindness within the town and on trip advisor. He lived up to his reputation. We sampled the foods native to the forrest and he even convinced one of us to try termite.
We took a boat trip out with Samara Adventures and were delighted to see awe inspiring sightings of humback whales and beautiful fish snorkeling in the reef. Again, the staff were such a pleasure to spend time with.
Leaving Playa Carillio which is very tranquil, to go to Samara was also fun. It was more lively with bars and restaurants on the beach and with many places to shop, internet cafes, and lots of different adventure pursuits to choose from.
All in all, I would struggle to find any negative thing to say. It was perfect

Clean, roomy, rustic/modern, all you need
Love this place! Swinging on the front porch watching the ocean views, listening to the howler monkeys, nice! Easy walk to the 2 mile crescent beach. Everything in walking distance, with Samara a short distance with everything else. Not Michelin rated, but an incredible value!

Rusic/modern, roomy/efficient, great views
Such a great place! Plenty of room, all your basic needs. Not Michelin rated, hey, for Costa Rica I think this a great value. The views off the front porch in cool swing chairs is top shelf. 5 minute walk to an incredibly nice 2 mile crescent shaped beach. Just a great overall experience.

A tropical dream vacation!
We had the most enjoyable vacation of our lives at Casa Pericos! We found it very relaxing to sit in the swinging chairs on the deck and look out over the fantastic mangrove and views of the sunsets over the ocean. Cooking fresh fish we caught on our deep sea fishing trip with Captain Rick and the fresh lobsters we bought from the local fishermen was so much fun in the well equipped and spacious kitchen. We enjoyed the pleasant short walk to enjoy the beach and visit the charming villages where there were so many wonderful restaurants and plenty of local shopping. The howler monkeys entertained us with their funny screams and playful antics. We can't wait to come back to Casa Pericos. The best vacation ever!

Paradise!
Casa Pericos is the perfect rental property in Playa Carillo, Costa Rica. We enjoyed stunning views of the beach, tropical foliage, and wildlife (including monkeys). The house is very spacious and filled with modern amenities. The beach is just a short walk away. The porch has a wonderful ocean view and is a great place to relax in the hammocks or eat a meal al fresco. We will definitely be returning to Casa Pericos! It is the epitome of PURA VIDA!
