It opened to the public in 1991 and is one of the few Turkish castles that is now a museum; it housed local residents in 18 apartments until 1979. The view from the castle offers a stunning panorama of Marmaris Bay.
- Heaven Island and Nimara Cave: Heaven Island is a peninsula a few miles south of Marmaris most known for the Nimara Cave. Though a place of worship for over 12,000 years, it also includes ancient ruins such as city walls, a watchtower, and ancient homesites. The cave is also notable for being the home of trogloxene butterflies which live part-time at the entrance to the cave. The peninsula can be reached in about an hour’s hike from Marmaris. The cave and island were declared protected areas in 1999.
