Where is Costa Adeje?

On the southwest end of the island of Tenerife — the largest of the Canary Islands — is an archipelago belonging to Spain called Costa Adeje, though it’s located off the southernmost coast of Morocco. This coastal suburb is two miles south of downtown Adeje and was developed in 1966. It is serviced by Queen Sofia Tenerife South Airport.

What is Costa Adeje known for?

Costa Adeje is one of the most important tourist towns in the Canary Islands and is home to the largest concentration of five-star hotels in Europe. Costa Adeje contains six beaches, including Playa Fañabé, Playa del Duque, and Playa de Torviscas. The area offers an endless array of vacation activities including beaches, waterparks, watersports, zoos, hiking, and go-karting. Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the world’s second largest carnival, found on the island’s capital of Santa Cruz, 36 miles north of Adeje. Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes up the entire center of the island, home to Mount Teide, the world’s third tallest volcano as measured from the base. It is also considered Spain’s highest mountain at over 12,000 feet.

A quick guide to Costa Adeje

  • Playa del Duque: A large, clean golden sand beach dotted with restaurants, bars, and shops along the upmarket promenade, Playa del Duque is only a short 10 minute walk from downtown and also walkable from Playa Fañabé. If you want to spend your day under the sun, umbrellas, beach loungers, toilets, and showers are available for rent.
  • Playa Fañabé: Playa Fañabé is a lively beach with plenty of restaurants, shops, and a live music scene for all tastes and costs. This stretch offers all the beachside amenities one might hope for, abutting Playa de Torviscas and just north of town in the middle of it all.
  • Siam Park: A Thai-themed water park that first opened its doors in 2008, Siam Park is widely reputed to be one of the best in Europe. The park includes 25 buildings and attractions such as a wave pool, a lazy river, a water coaster, river rapids ride, multiple waterslides, and a ProSlide Freefall. Just across the street is Siam Mall, a similarly themed shopping plaza made up of 70 different stores.

Popular destinations near Costa Adeje

  • Tenerife Zoo Monkey Park: A small primate zoo and breeding program for endangered species, Tenerife Zoo Monkey Park also includes exhibits of parrots, guinea pigs, and lizards. Buy a tub of food at the front desk to get up close and personal to feed them by hand. The zoo is easily accessible, being a short minute taxi ride from most neighborhoods and resorts.
  • Castillo de San Miguel: Castillo de San Miguel is a modern built, medieval-style castle that offers nightly dinner shows of medieval knights-themed performances, complete with horseback jousting tournaments. Head over to the castle for a boisterous night of fun after a day spent lounging at the beach.
  • Barranco del Infierno: A special nature reserve area with a rugged hike up through a gorge to a small waterfall, Barranco del Infierno takes about three and a half hours to hike and is found on the northern outskirts of Adeje town. Prior reservations are necessary, as only 300 people are allowed inside the park per day to preserve its natural beauty.

Best neighborhoods in Costa Adeje

  • Costa Adeje: The main village of Costa Adeje is directly on the coast, offering everything a vacationer could want, including large clusters of resorts, beaches, restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs, and shops. Siam Park, Siam Mall, and Aqualand are all centrally located close by.
  • Playa de Las Américas: South of Costa Adeje, Playa de Las Américas is a vibrant 1960’s era resort community with a strong British influence in its restaurants, pubs, and shops. Local attractions include sailing, windsurfing, golfing, and the nightlife hub of Veronica’s Strip. The local beaches include Playa de Las Américas, Playa de las Vistas, and Playa del Camisón.
  • Los Cristianos: Los Cristianos is a smaller village adjacent to Playa de Las Américas, found in a protected bay known as the watersports hub of the area. Other attractions include whale-watching and swimming at Playa de los Cristianos or walking the promenade at Playa de los Tarajales. The ferry leaving the port heads for the north end of Tenerife or other Canary Islands. If you want to explore more, the Monkey Zoo and Jungle Park are also nearby.
