About this cottage rental
High on the Mendip Hills, sits a stone cottage on a working farm, with breathtaking views over the Somerset Levels. The cottage was built around 1850 and was formerly occupied by the local shepherd grazing his sheep on this area of the Mendip Hills. Today the land is grazed by the traditional breeds of Longhorn Cattle and Wiltshire Horn Sheep, well suited to managing the natural grassland on the farm. Cheddar Gorge, Site of Special Scientific Interest, lies to the north of the farm and Mascalls’ Wood, an ancient woodland, lies to the west. Cheddar village and local shops are a distance of about 1 mile from the cottage. Ideal for walkers and close to the Mendip Way.

I single mum went with my daughter to stay few days, but our terrible experience left a scar on us..
On arrival, two big dogs ran towards us jumping on us. My daughter did freeze as one dog nearly her height, jumped on her, the owner did not ask the dogs to step down. The property inside was infested with clouds of flies in our room, so I asked for assistance, the lady offered that we apply a spray, but the other owner said, "You will have to get used to it, we have them everywhere."
There were also numerous of giant spiders and webs above our beds, I had to remove and clean all this, certainly not what I paid for. When tried to cook, there were also spider webs in the drinking glasses, grease and dirt on the pots etc, seem an issue of hygiene. Once the night fell, we were disturbed by loud noises from rodents above us, giving us anxiety and making it impossible to sleep.
The worst was in the morning, after I politely notified the owner of my concerns and stated that I had no choice but to leave, requesting a partial refund, I was packing our belongings in the car, when the owner, approached us shouting at me with much anger, using offensive language, saying that he was “very angry” and that I would not “see my money back”. His behaviour was very threatening, he was waving and raising his arms on my face. Frightened by the owner attitude we quickly got in the car and left immediately.
This was utterly unacceptable especially in front of a child, as I said left a scar on us.

This was such a precious place. Judy and Paul are very kind. Great location, beautiful views, comfy living situation, and amazing dogs that I will miss. Loved the wood stove. Thank you so much for having us, Cheddar was a great experience! Neighborhood is amazing, walk around it if you can

Paul was very easy to work with prior to trip and a delight in person. The converted barn has all the ingredients for a restful retreat nestled in a beautiful farm looking out over Cheddar and surrounds. We had a great time with hosts that got the balance right between friendly and helpful and leaving us to do our own thing. Would be back in a flash if Australia wasn’t so far away.

We had a very lovely stay. The Shepherds hut has everything you need for a relaxing stay, location, views, facilities and very welcoming and kind hosts. We really enjoyed the tranquility and the abundance of unspoilt nature and wildlife at the property and beyond. We were warmly greeted on our arrival, parked our vehicle and there it stayed until we had to leave ( didn't want too!) Great local area to explore on foot, with lots of helpful information and tips from Paul who made us feel very welcome including our little four legged rascal .A big thank you and we very much look forward to returning

Paul and Judy have an ideal retreat waiting for you to enjoy a peaceful exploration of the area. The cottage sits atop a hill with a glorious view to enjoy after a days walking in the hills and woods. The accommodation is basic but perfectly comfortable and has all you need for a break from the everyday pressures of normal life. The shower has real power to wake you up too. Paul and Judy a very hospitable and are unobtrusively available should you require help. Their two dogs are extremely friendly. All in all a very good choice for a stay in the area and we thank you for looking after us so well.

The owners of the farm are very friendly but I feel that the cottage needs a little TLC to bring it up to standard.
I am a little slow on my feet and I feel there ought to be some mention of the steep steps to the front door can be quite slippy although there is a well positioned handle to help.
Through no fault of the owners we had very heavy rain throughout most of our stay and the ground in front of the cottage and path at the rear were very slippery.
The view is fantastic but it is such a shame that there is a broken down old car to the left of the cottage slightly blocking the view and having some effect on parking which is very narrow and slippery to drive into and get out of the car.
Internally it was a little disappointing with paintwork dirty and holed (bathroom door).Due to the heavy rain the front wall had significant damp halfway up in the kitchen. The lounge/bedroom window is single glazed and draughty. The 'cooker' was two electric rings and a microwave and the dining area a small square table with two folding chairs.
The bathroom was basic, the shower excellent but again at the window a net curtain pinned up with rusty drawing pins.
The log burner was very welcome but small, the front door of the log burner difficult to close which was a little worrying as the beds are in the same room. The beds are the top and bottom of a bunk bed but quite comfortable.Kitchen utensils were usable. The whole cottage became very cold in night without the burner.

We spent a wonderful 2 night stay here. Paul and Judy and their 3 dogs are lovely and made us feel so welcome and comfortable.
The shepherd hut is great with lots of character. You are left a large supply of free logs for the fire which makes the place feel so cosy, told if you run out to just leave the basket outside and it will be filled up again for you. On arrival they told us the history of the hut which was fascinating. Kitchen is small but with all the basic equipment you will need
You feel like your way out in the country but it’s only a 5 min drive from cheddar town and a few mins more to the gorge. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway I would highly recommend it. It’s also a great base for walking

Thank you Judy, Paul, and your lovely dogs for the warm hospitality. We felt at home the moment we got there. The cottage is comfortable and warm. We appreciated that the woodstove was ready for us the first night and for the suply of wood. The view of Cheddar from the cottage is amazing, especially sunset. Loved the quiet, peaceful nature and farm sounds in the morning while drinking my coffee outside and seeing a beautiful deer in the field on my early morning stroll. We also enjoyed our walk up the hill to the view of the gorge. Spectacular view. The only dissapointment is that we had to cut our stay short due to my spouse not feeling well. Otherwise we would have stayed longer. We would recomend a stay at your cottage and come back ourselves if we are in the area again.

Cosy hillside shepherd's cottage
This is a former shepherd's cottage on a working farm run by our welcoming hosts Paul and Judy. It is compact but has all the amenities for a comfortable stay for two. The farm has rare breed cattle, sheep and chicken and our hosts were also able to offer their own products for sale at reasonable prices. It is on a hillside overlooking Cheddar and about 25 mins from the cathedral city of Wells. We enjoyed or stay very much. Recommended!

Lovely Short Break
Shepherds Cottage is the ideal place to get away from it all! You find everything you need inside the cottage and the views are just amazing. It’s so quiet, I slept like a baby. Judy and Paul are the perfect hosts and the dogs Meg and Tess are just cute. It was lovely to light the wood burner in the evenings. The farm eggs are delicious and Jusy’s raspberry jam tasted really good! I walked to Cheddar Gorge (it really is only a 20 minutes walk away from the cottage) and enjoyed the lovely views over the Gorge. Cheddar reservoir is also great to watch the sunset. The hill up to the cottage is steep, but nothing to worry about. There is plenty of hiking opportunities. Glastonbury, Wells and Wookey Hole Caves are only a short drive away. I’d always come back!
