About this cottage rental
Heron View Cottage is a charming retreat located directly on scenic Machias Bay, on the spectacular Downeast Coast of Maine. This picturesque, historic 200-year-old cottage has all modern amenities and is cozy and affordable. It's the the perfect getaway for a couple, small family, group of 3, or an individual looking to experience the Maine coast in an idyllic setting. The lovely 2-bedroom cottage has beautiful, sweeping views of Machias Bay from expansive windows in the dining room, bedroom and even bathroom. An enclosed porch also has magnificent bay views and is always a wonderful place to relax. Features of the cottage include comfortable country antique furnishings, and the spacious living room features a fireplace where you can enjoy the ambiance of its soothing warmth and comforting crackle. There is one bedroom on each floor and a fully-equipped galley kitchen. Please note that rentals have a 7 night minimum stay. Rentals are Saturday to Saturday (although some exceptions can be made).
The Outdoors: Heron View Cottage is just a short drive from Jasper Beach, with its expansive, half-mile-long cobble beach and surf. There are several hiking trails located in Cutler that are only a 20+ minute drive from the house. The Bold Coast, Boot Cove and Hamilton Cove (among others) trails skirt along the edge of rugged ocean cliffs and scenic vistas. They are “must do” hikes when visiting the Downeast coast area.
Another “must do” while in the area is the Atlantic Puffin boat tours offered by Captain Cates of the Bold Coast Charter Company out of Cutler harbor. These beautiful and rare parrot-like seabirds only frequent a few of the rugged offshore islands along the Maine coast. Your destination of Machias Seal Island, only 9 miles off Cutler, is the largest puffin colony on the Maine coast, with thousands more birds than any other site. But if you want to do this, please book early!
Lobsters and Whales: The cottage is only a short drive to the lobster wharf in Bucks Harbor where you'll have the opportunity to pick out your own fresh lobsters near the pier. You can also hop on a whale-watching cruise departing from Eastport daily. The cottage is only 1 hour from this popular and picturesque whale-watching port.
The famous Machias Wild Blueberry Festival in August!
You won't want to miss the Downeast event of the year – the annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival in Machias. This is a fun-filled celebration of the blueberry. The Downeast region produces nearly 85% of the world's blueberries. The residents of the area are proud of that fact and it shows. There’s no lack of exciting events for everyone at this event – a Main Street parade, blueberry farm tours, magic shows, fabulous food, fireworks, crafts and fine art by regional artists, live music and, of course the blueberry pie-eating contest!

I love this cottage! The placement , the age, the ocean! Everything about it is amazing! If you are looking for a quiet ocean vacation , this is the perfect place! Nothing but ocean, birds, and tides going in and out!! I will be returning many times as I can!

Unusually hot weather kept us from staying in the cottage. Even with fans going was impossible to stay inside due to the stifling heat. Sleeping was impossible We had to leave after one day of our paid week stay. A disappointment for us. Certainty not the fault of the owner

This lovely cottage served as the centerpiece of our week long vacation. No matter where we went, it was a pleasure to come back to it and just hang out there. We would do it again!

We absolutely loved this little 200 year old cottage and the whole historical area. It’s off the beaten path but close enough to civilization to get things you really need. It’s a great place to just relax- read a book or two and just sit and watch the tide flow- the birds forage and the breeze cool your day. If you love the outdoors- it’s a great landing spot for day trips to great places to see the beauty of the area. Ed is a great host- available and helpful when or if he’s needed. We enjoyed every minute!!

Amazing location for a quiet vacation with my Aunt. Lot's of history in this area. Visited Eastport, Lubec and Bangor. The Lobster from Mother Shuckers was delicious!!

My husband & I found our week, at this cottage, to be very enjoyable. The view of the bay, from the deck & enclosed back porch, was peaceful & beautiful. Watching the tide go on & out was interesting. We did see an Eagle a few days. The living room furniture is a bit uncomfortable, but the tv & cell phone reception were excellent. The bed was very comfortable. Getting in & out of the claw foot tub was a little tricky (we are both in our mid-60’s) but the water pressure was great. The yard, with roses & lupines was so pretty. The location is convenient to towns. GPS took us directly to the cottage.
We took a couple day trips to go on a Puffin watch tour, with Captain Robertson (Robertson Sea Tours) in Millbridge & then to Lubec to visit that town & to go to the Quoddy Head State Park, where we enjoyed a nice hike on the coastline & saw the lighthouse. We highly recommend both ventures.
Ed was very easy to rent from. He responded quickly to text messages.
We would definitely rent this cottage again & hope to do so.

We loved our stay in Heron View Cottage! The view of the water was amazing and we absolutely loved waking up to the ocean right outside our bedroom window. The cottage definitely reflects classic coastal Maine and Ed provided us with plenty of guides and maps to aid us in our exploring. Ed was very communicative and whenever we needed anything he was ready to help. One thing we’ll warn you about is the bathtub/shower is more just a shower as the tub is old and has paint chipping off the bottom. So if you need a tub this may not be the place for you. However, this town and area is fabulous and definitely worth a stay! We’d recommend checking out all the local shops and chatting up the locals as they’re so kind- Coffee and Crisp was a great breakfast place! Thanks Ed!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the house. The view over the bay was better than I had expected. Bed was comfortable. The kitchen is very small. It was difficult for two people to pass each other in it. But it was extremely well supplied as was the whole house. The location is great for proximity to fantastic hikes, mostly along the coast. Highly recommend this home.

This is a completely charming, lovingly decorated historic cottage with an impressive view, which we enjoyed from the outdoor patio and indoor porch (with multiple windows looking out on the bay). There are lovely paintings and knickknacks throughout each room, which probably makes it less suitable for folks with very young children. The main bedroom was spacious and also has bay views. There is a very small bedroom upstairs, but that's seems not as usable. While the kitchen is indeed tiny, we found it to be very well-equipped, and we prepared several meals in it, including lobsters, which we steamed in the huge lobster pot thoughtfully provided by Ed. There were also lobster picks and crackers! The plumbing worked very well, and the soap and fluffy towels were nice to have. Ed's recommendations for nearby hikes and eateries came in handy. We strongly recommend Helen's. We did several hikes, including one at Quoddy Head Light and one on the Cutler Preserve. We also enjoyed an afternoon at Jasper Beach and trips to Canada--to Campobello and to St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. While there's no washer/dryer (something the listing was upfront about), there was an excellent laundromat a short drive away in Machias. All in all, we very much enjoyed our stay in this magical place!

The cottage was warm and charming, better than the pictures show. I went to hike, bike and paddle, and the location was perfect, it offered a lot more than I could do in a week without travelling very far. The only down-side was the road noise, it took away from the enjoyment of the cottage. Part of that is I live on a quite dead end street. Other than that, everything was perfect.

Spent the week on the deck or in the screened porch watching the river go in and out with the tides. The house was cozy, the bed was comfy and I liked its proximity to Machias for groceries and Lubec for hiking

Wonderful Escape
Heron Cottage was delightful. It's small and relatively remote. The quiet surroundings were relaxing, we loved watching birds and seals and deer and just sitting in the back room and porch watching the ocean. The property is perfect for two and a superb choice for relaxing and decompressing.
Ed, the owner, was so easy to work with and accommodating it made the trip that much better.
It's well worth the trip!

Best of Maine
This charming cottage offers a cozy, authentic Maine stay with a stunning view of the bay. This is a place that has obviously been treasured and decorated by someone who enjoys the area's great natural and nautic history, and has everything for an easy stay. The hardest part is deciding whether to sit on the porch watching the wildlife and tides, or exploring the many parks and beaches in the surrounding area. The cottage does sit close to the road but doesn't distract from enjoying this amazing spot. If you're traveling with young kids or pets you just need to be aware and plan accordingly.

Fantastic
This is our 2nd visit to Heron Cottage and we will return again. The siting is fantastic, the house perfectly unique and warm and the area is spectacular for hiking. One is content to just sit watching the tides go in and out and the weather shift.

Quintessential Maine Experience
Charming small DownEast cottage with serene, closeup views of the Machias River estuary. Private; well-equipped,; with everything you need to cook - including a lobster pot - essential in this area!

Beautiful! Peaceful!
Staying at the cottage was like being in a cozy peaceful Christmas movie. Rustically decorated with all that I’d expect in a Downeast Maine cottage. The view from the main bedroom is magical. The nighttime skies were clear and without light pollution. If you want a decompressing stay the cottage has all you could need. But, if you like to be on the go you are close to Canada, Campobello, or multiple beaches and state parks on the mid-coast. I will likely return.

An enchanting cottage, an enchanting visit
Heron View Cottage was just the restful time for which we hoped. There are lots of wonderful mini road trips in the area and time to actually watch the heron, the cormorants, the gulls, and the dramatic tides. And it was wonderful to get away from the constant drone of news! I would recommend highly.

Its about the view
The view is the star of the show at this place. Absolutely beautiful. The home is eccentric but cosy for two. If you like old houses, you can forgive the quirks. The road is close but not intrusive.
Interesting stuff everywhere. Go to Helen's to eat and use the tiny kitchen minimally. If you have a lot of hair, bring a your own dryer. Rent a second kayak from Rob and enjoy the water right from the house. He delivers. Best hike is Long's Point. This is all good.

Beautiful view
A cozy place to stay with amazing views of water, hills, and sea birds. In a convenient location near Machias and Machiasport. The cottage is filled with antiques, which makes the place charming and pleasant. However, there is an overabundance of bottles on the windows, so many that they have dried bugs and cobwebs, and opening any window requires the removal of many of these bottles. This is not a big deal, but it may not be to everyone's taste. We enjoyed the back porch as it's the best place to sit and enjoy the the view.

Staying in Machiasport on the River and Bay.
This was swell located and attractive cottage right in the water. Machias is a friendly community which is quiet and at all touristy in June at least. Excellent trails and birdwatching - including trips to Seal Island for Puffin viewing. I enjoyed it.

This is the only way to experience Maine!
This was our 3rd stay at Heron View and it topped all the rest. Over the course of a day you see the effect of the tides on the wild life. Over the course of the month you see the changes of the Sun's and Moon's effect on the tides. This time we also had the eclipse and it's effects on the wild life.
Love it all!!!

Look forward to another stay
This is our second time at Heron View. It was immaculate and well equipped with all necessities. Owner, Ed, could not be more accommodating and helpful. The antique decor makes the cottage feel feel like you are living in a story book. It is a beautiful, peaceful spot and convenient to many interesting places (Bay of Fundy, St. Andrews, Campobello, Roque Bluffs, Jasper Beach etc.) Herons, egrets, bald eagles were a few of the visitors. We look forward to returning.

Living in an antique collector's storage!
This was a wonderful two weeks. You actually live in an antique collection while vacationing.
Views were fantastic and access to many other areas of interest were extra special.
Listing accurately depicts the property. It was clean and the owner provide personal service to ensure things were as expected.
I would recommend this property for couples. Helen's is a great place to eat. Would recommend a trip to Jaspers Beach and Roque Bluff.

Heron View lives up to its name
Heron View Cottage should really be called heron, osprey, eagle, seal, egret, plover, sandpiper and more view Cottage!
Gorgeous setting, very sweet cottage, light streaming into virtually every room. Everything you might need from lobster pot, to coffee grinder, to CD's, to kayak to reading materials are provided. When planning your trip know that you will need to plan for many hours just sitting on the back deck, with a coffee in the morning and a glass of wine and local lobster in the evening, just drinking in the view. The coast road 191 from Cutler up to Quoddy has a number of nature preserves with hikes of 2-3 miles to the coast and back. Each one merits a picinic and a pair of binoculars.

Charming Heron View Cottage
Our stay at Heron View Cottage last summer was one of the best vacations we have had. My husband, our 9 year-old, and myself, had a very relaxing stay, getting out daily for Bold Coast hiking, beach combing & exploring, leisure drives, historic touring, and many more adventures. Yet each day we found ourselves returning earlier and earlier to Heron View. The cottage really is charming, filled with antiques and Americana. All that we needed to make our stay comfortable was there - and the town of Machias had all stores and amenities.
The sunrise is spectacular, especially when viewed from the enclosed porch overlooking the bay. Within a couple days, even my 9 year-old was up to join us for this early morning ritual. We used the cottage's kayak and ventured out on the bay a couple times, warmed up by the fireplace after a few rainy outings, and even kicked back with some board games. I was even overruled one day when planning a day trip, & was told that they preferred spending the day at the cottage - thus we each kicked backed in our own spaces reading and relaxing - the ultimate R & R. Heron View Cottage had that strong a pull on us. And, yes, we are returning this summer. It's a bit of a long drive for us to get there, but it certainly is worth it!
