Very well stocked and taken care of property The use of kayak , paddle boards and other marine floats was a lot of fun! The start date for the camp was changed in short notice for us. This was difficult as some of the adults had already scheduled their vacation time months before

We had an amazing stay at the Adirondack “Big House”. Plenty of room for the family. Kids loved the lofts. Loved the charm of the cabin, not one of those new eyesore McMansions. Easy waterfront access to Fourth Lake and Inlet/Old Forge via South Shore Road. Many nights spent around the fire pit watching the stars.

We had a wonderful week-long stay at this property. It was clean, had well-stocked kitchen, had lots of seating areas, and it was large enough to give 10 family members their own space when wanted. Outside, there is a big fire pit with a huge supply of firewood, and there is a canoe, paddle boat, and kayak for venturing out on the lake. Finally, the owners of the property are quick to respond if you have any questions or problems. We enjoyed every moment we spent at The Big House.

The area was beautiful. Peaceful . Enjoyed the kayaks and pedal boat. Plenty of space in the house for everyone. Plenty of extra supplies. The only thing was the beds. They were very uncomfortable. Worn! Great place to vacation with large family!

We love coming here and sprawling out. Everyone has their own space which is important with Teenagers. Plenty to do with 4th lake, hiking, inlet and old forge.

However, there is definitely a mold issue in the basement. While there the upstairs toilets and showers leaked down through the main floor and the Main floor bathroom leaked down into the basement bedroom. The size of the camp was great but it needs alot of updates and improvements first and foremost of the plumbing.

We (4 couples) had a great time staying here for the weekend. Late October on 4th Lake is a bit to chilly to enjoy the water. The fire pit managed to keep us warm on night and the inside fire place the next. This house is a perfect example of "Grandma's House". Big.cozy, lots of rooms with room for everyone to stay over. It is NOT a 5 star Hotel, nor did we want it to be. Bring you own linens and towels. Feel free to use the kitchen, wash up when your done. Have fun, go home. We hope to stay here again.

Process of renting was easy specially we decided to travel 3 weeks before traveling.
The out doors is lovely with kayaks and row boat, canoe, paddle boat . The setting is great but the cabin needs a lot of updates
All the screens are broken
We had mice and mice droppings every where and occasionally we had chipmunk in the house
We spent a full morning vacuuming the enclosed porch using a very heavy ancient vacuum cleaner that spewed out the mouse droppings.
Kitchen had two coffee machines
But no tea kettle
Kitchen sink drainage was broken the first day and we spent time to fix it
If the renovation of the cabin is done the place will be great .

The location is very beautiful. You are right on the water and it's very serene. We loved sitting on the dock or sitting on the screened-in porch looking at the water. The stars were beautiful at night! We also really enjoyed the firepit - it's a really nice, newer one and we enjoyed starting a fire almost every night. We had one cooler day and started a fire in one of the two fireplaces in the house and that was really nice, too. We also loved taking the kayaks and paddleboat out into the lake and exploring. The property owner responded quickly to any of our inquiries and everything was organized well.
The home is older, although the kitchen is modern and fully equipped. There is plenty of space in the home and many people could stay here. The basement is huge and my kids loved taking all their toys down there and having the run of the space!
My only thing to note is that you really can't swim right off the dock. It's mucky. And the property owner said this and my kids said this, and other reviewers said this, but I had to try it myself to see how bad it really was. I used to swim in the Niagara River and Lake Erie, and I thought my kids were just being sensitive. But no, it IS mucky with silt/sand that will come up to your thighs. The property owner told us we could take the boat out to the middle of the cove or out to the lake and we could easily swim there. We would have definitely done that, but my kids were too nervous. We did end up going to the small public beach in Inlet and my kids got their swim fix there. I know there is one in Old Forge too, but we didn't try it.
You have to bring your own linens and towels. There is a very nice washer and dryer that we made use of. The TV is equipped with a DVD player and there are a ton of DVDs there, but you may want to bring your own. There is no cable, but you could bring an HDMI cable and try to stream something from your phone or tablet. The internet was slower, but not as slow as I was expecting. I had to work a few days there and was able to use the internet for emails. The phone service is minimal, although they will let you use the landline for local calls. There are also a ton of books and kids books, which my kids ABSOLUTELY LOVED discovering.
Overall, it is a beautiful location. You can't beat the views and the nature that surrounds you. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a relaxing getaway.

Massive home that feels comfy and offers best views and easy access to either Old Forge or Inlet.

great place for fourteen people. the water craft and all of the other amenity's made for fun filled days. a great place to stay.

This is our group’s 2nd time at the Big House. The owners updated the kitchen nicely w new cabinets, countertop, floors and a more open feel. The finished basement area - bedroom, sitting area and bathroom gets water (parts of carpet are wet regularly) and has a pretty strong mildew smell. We cleaned the filter and restarted the dehumidifier when there but it needs more. The first and second floors are fine. The house is huge without even using that area if it bothers you but something to be aware of if you are a large group and people sleep down there. I am sure the owners will try to alleviate it as best they can. Overall we enjoyed our second visit. The house sits on a quiet cove and has a good bit of privacy which is really nice. Kari is responsive as an owner.

We had an amazing time. We as a family get together every Memorial Day weekend and this by far was our favorite trip yet. Thank you for your gracious accommodations.

Great place, super roomy, easy owners
We are a group of families with small children and loved staying here. The house is so spacious and everyone had plenty of space without being on top of each other. It’s a bit dated but we didn’t mind since it gives a laid-back unpretentious feeling. The owners were great to work with - checked on us once, were available if needed, but gave us our space.
Kitchen was fully stocked w all the cooking utensils you need. Having so many bathrooms was a lifesaver. The fire pit is really nice and there are a lot of Adk chairs to lounge in.
The beach is very, very mucky. They don’t advertise swimming as an amenity but we overlooked that. Plan to swim at one of the local beaches nearby or the DEC day use island you can kayak to and pay for.
Overall it was a comfortable place, conveniently located, with a great view and we look forward to returning.

Great for Families!
Plenty of room for a large family and a few water craft to use. Loved the large screened porch facing the water. Good size kitchen and very well stocked with basics. The fire pit was fantastic with plenty of firewood. Would definitely recommend.

We are a party of 3 families - 6 adults and 4 children ages 8 to 4. This is our first time renting in the Adirondacks. We found the house to be very comfortable, fully equipped and a great spot for families with young children. Our favorite places to be were the huge screened in porch overlooking the lake and evenings around the new firepit. The house is huge with plenty of room for all of us. The lower level suite including bedroom, bath and family room was great space for peace and quiet. Most of our time, however, was spent outdoors enjoying our surroundings, swimming, hiking, enjoying the canoe, kyaks, and paddleboat that were provided. We were close to the village for shopping, water park, beaches and movie theater for a rainy day. We did know to bring our sheets and towels as well as how to deal with the garbage so these were non-issues. We found this to be a wonderful place to "get away from it all", and we ALL loved our stay at the Big House.

Beautiful Area and a Great Value for a Big Group
We are a party of three families (six adults and six children ages 8-15) who have vacationed annually in different mountain locations for the past three years. Finding a house large enough to host our group comfortably is a challenge. This house worked very well for us. The kids enjoyed sleeping together in the rooms with the lofts, but if privacy is an issue, pick another bedroom as you can hear between the rooms with the connecting lofts.
The kitchen is on the smaller side, but has a lot of kitchen utensils to easily cook and serve 12. The outdoor grill is convenient to the kitchen, but is on the older side and a couple of the burners didn't work as well as the others.
The real winning items in our opinion were the huge screened-in porch overlooking the lake and easy access to the lake with the kayaks, canoe, and paddle boat on the property. These two things made the house a tremendous value. We spent a lot of our time sitting and talking on the porch and a lot of time exploring the lake with the water crafts provided. The porch is next to a large living room and there is also another living room downstairs so there was lots of space to spread out and get quiet time if needed.
There is a binder that tells the story of the house's previous owner and how the house got its name. There are a lot of items in the house from the family matriarch and after a short while you do feel like you are in home rather than a rental house. I found it to be warmer and more interesting than other houses we've rented for the group. That said, it is a house that has been lived in, so if you are looking for new and spotless, this house isn't for you. The shower water sometimes cuts in and out depending on who else turned on the water, so you have to be prepared to roll with it.
Other things we would have liked to know about the house and area:
- You need to bring your own towels and sheets. We didn't realize that, so were not prepared, but the owners were kind enough to bail us out. There are 2 queen beds, 3 full, 6 twins.
- There is a big TV, but there is no cable/sat, so you can watch DVDs on it only.
- There is wifi, but if you are connecting multiple devices or using a VPN line for work, there can be slowness at times.
- There is poor cell service/GPS in the area. Plan ahead for directions.
- Be prepared to drive your trash and recyclables to the transfer station a few miles away.
Loved our stay!!!
