Or you can enjoy all that the greater Bangor/Brewer area has to offer: Waterfront Concerts, Cross Insurance Center for trade shows and concerts, Penobscot Theater for live theater, the Bangor Symphony, unique brew pubs, numerous parks with hiking trails and so much more. There is something for everyone!

If you are looking for privacy, solitude and enjoy the outdoors, this is the place for you. From the deck you can watch the eagles soar... from the shore you can catch a striper... in the summer you can while away the hours watching the boats go by ... in the winter you can listen to the thunderous cracks of the ice flows in the river. Imagine painting, writing and creating with nature’s inspiration!
The 1-acre Orrington, Maine property boasts over 100’ of shoreline, with magnificent southerly views down the Penobscot. Bordered by a stream and seasonal pond, and filled with the fragrance of wildflowers and perennials, the wooded lot is a haven for wildlife. The home is reached by a well-maintained private dirt road.
The home was constructed in 1978 on the site of the Union Ice Company, which was founded in 1882. The remains of the old ice house foundations and artifacts of the past can be found in and around the property.
The unique round design of the house is reflective of mid-century modern organic design... with a funky twist. It is actually giant yurt design! Radiating from a central spiral staircase, the open concept and curved walls create a smooth continuous flow. The expansive wall of glass that encircles the main floor connects one with the outside ... as if perched in the treetops. The remarkable architectural design is in harmony with nature … its forest green wood siding blending into its surroundings.
The Main Floor amenities include:
• A fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar
• Expansive open Living, Dining, and Den areas... all with spectacular views, bamboo floors and exquisite wool rugs, leather and teak furniture.
• Den area has a convertible full size sofa bed and Roku TV

Our stay at the River House was truly perfect. We had visits from owls every night, had scavenger hunts in the wooded paths, lounged for hours on the dock and jumped in the river. It was also close enough to explore Acadia National Park and the neighboring cities. The house was beautiful and clean and Sue, the host, was great!

A charming house in a very quiet, secluded area but still only 15 minutes from shopping and restaurants. The house was clean and very well appointed. The welcome basket with local treats and snacks was a nice touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the River House and will definitely return.

The house was so clean and peaceful upon arrival and I really appreciated that everything we needed was already there! Very doable drive for day trips to bar harbor and acadia, about an hour. By far, best part was the beautiful river view. Thanks so much for a lovely stay!

Had a great time in a beautiful house. Very peaceful surroundings. We had nightly visits from a family of barred owls and saw eagles as well. Great experience.

Gorgeous, very unique property. Very quiet, felt as we were in the backwoods to northern Maine (with all the comforts of home) and still being 10 minutes from downtown Bangor!. Was an easy hour drive to Acadia NP and MDI. Was visited a few nights by several Barred Owls as we enjoyed the campfire. They landed on the tree right outside the house! We also observed a large Bald Eagle that landed during breakfast one morning on a tree overlooking the river 100 feet from the house. As a family we enjoyed the beach area and the kayaks at low tide. Amazed on the tide range.
The house was very clean and inviting. The kitchen had everything we needed. Loved the separate pantry area to store our food and essentials.
Sue was wonderful to deal with from early on in the booking process with a reservation issue to giving us suggestions of things to do. Even letting us know of the large community yard sale that could cause traffic issues.
Would have loved to stay longer . If we visit the area again we would definitely stay at The River House!

We had a wonderful time at the River House. Everything was perfect, especially the million dollar view of the river! Susan makes every effort to make her guest's feel comfortable. The home is tastefully decorated and the yard is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend this home!

The River House was a great place to stay and everything we could hope for. The view of the river was awesome and the hosts were terrific! They asked us over for a BBQ and boat ride which was great and there immediate response to our questions was fantastic! The central location in Maine gave us easy access to awesome hikes in Baxter, Acadia, state parks, and other places. Bangor is just a very short drive away. We would definitely stay here again.

This place is perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. The house is right on the river on a dead-end street, so it is very quiet. We enjoyed sitting by the river and watch boaters go by. The house has enough space for 5 people to spread around. It's clean and the kitchen is stocked with all the necessities to make meals. Our hosts greeted us with a basket of delicious Maine treats. They were friendly and offered us a boat ride which was a special treat. We would definitely stay here again since it's perfectly located to see other places.

We loved staying at The River House on our vacation. The property is well maintained and Joe and Sue were so helpful and kind. Close to town but also a private location. We would definitely stay there again!

The Riverhouse was the perfect location for our vacation. The house is beautifully furnished with all amenities a home needs to be comfortable. And from the moment of our arrival we felt welcome and at home here.
The view of the Penabscot River and surrounding area is spectacular and the location was perfect for romantic walks and sitting with my family around a fire in the evening. The nearby dock and our wonderful host helped feed our son’s newly found fishing habit.
It’s close enough to town to grab supplies or a coffee from Dunkin but secluded enough to feel like you’re away from it all.
I have recommended this property to a close friend and my family is already planning another visit…hopefully in the fall. I bet it’s stunning.

Beautiful & restful, yet close enough to take beautiful drives to various locations; small town feeling & safe; very close to Bangor. Joe & Sue were wonderful property hosts! We stayed a week, and we quickly realized that we wished we could've stayed longer! We really enjoyed celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary while staying at this beautiful River House and location❗️❤️

Unwind and take in the view:
Unique layout with all the windows and enjoyed looking out onto the river and surrounding trees. We were lucky to see 2 eagle sightings over the week in a tree right by river embankment. Kitchen was very well stocked for multiple types of cooking needs. Pet friendly property. Communication with owner was easy and found them very responsive to our questions/needs. On our arrival found the downstairs where beds are located to be very damp/musty and poor for sleeping. Informed owners the next day needed dehumidifiers and they had them up and running by mid day. Made huge difference within 24 hours. Every thing very clean but some furniture could probably stand to be replaced. The main couch seating has lost most of its support and the dining room chairs could be sturdier and maybe a little wider seat. We are an average weight couple and did not find them comfortable . We ate primarily at picnic table on the deck. Last is water access. You do have to go to the owners property right next door through a trail to make it down to water and area where kayaks are stored. Was a nice quiet secluded spot. Plenty to do in area and they also have a book full suggestions.

Fabulous River House
We spent 3 weeks at the River House. It is exactly as described. Being on the river was magical - the daily eagle show was mesmerizing. Joe and Sue were wonderful hosts, very attentive to all our needs and questions and equally respectful of our privacy.

Treehouse in paradise
Me my wife and two boys arrived aug 10 for the week and had the most incredible time. We could have stayed another week because there is so much to do. The river house was immaculate and was stocked with everything you could need. Just bring food lol. The views are beyond description and sue and joe are just wonderful. We fell in love with Maine and can’t wait to go back. The pictures don’t do the house justice. To much to do not enough time

Relaxing on the River
Our stay at the River House was fabulous. Sue and Joe were helpful and accommodating. Joe taught my husband how to fish which he enjoyed immensely. The house was perfect for the whole family. The upper level is comfortable, the perfect space to relax and watch the river. The lower level is quiet with enough separation between rooms for everyone to have privacy. The location is quiet and peaceful but close to shops and restaurants. My favorite spot on the property was the cliff overlooking the river. Great for morning coffee!

Best experience ever!
The River House was all we had hoped for in a vacation, and so much more. The property being right on the river with easy access was fantastic! Joe and Sue are wonderful people and they have thought of everything. Arriving to see a bottle of wine on the counter and music playing made us feel welcome the second we walked in the door. The house was full of essentials (even in the kitchen) making it feel like this was our home. There are walls of windows, all with great views of the river or trees on this fantastic property. Everything was super clean and there was something for everyone (so many magazines to read, puzzle books, games, etc.) inside the house for the early mornings or evenings relaxing with the family. I can't say enough about this experience. From kayaking on the river in the mornings, being centrally located between Bar Harbor/Acadia and Mount Katahdin (both a "must see"), to Joe helping our 10 year old son catch the biggest fish he ever saw (right on the dock at the property!), this will be a vacation we will always remember. Our family would like to thank Joe and Sue for all they have done. We will be back!

Magical place
This place was perfect for our family gathering. We had 6 adults and although one couple was in bunk beds, it worked out.
Sue had left us wildflowers and fresh local green beans and cherry tomatoes. So wonderful!
Some of the kitchen appliances are showing wear, but we would certainly rent this house again.

Wonderful stay!
The house is warm and welcoming. Everything you need is there from extra linen to muffin tins. Beautiful location on the river for just relaxing. Convenient for day trips to Acadia and Moose Head Lake, seaport drives, etc. Quiet and secluded but, convenient to stores and highway. Unique panoramic view of the river.

Scenic wonderland
We have visited, Maine for the past five years during the holidays to see our grand kids and this I by far the best place we have stayed at. Extremely close to downtown Bangor, Mall, Theater and restaurants. Although winter time is not for everybody, we thoroughly enjoy it. There are plenty of activities for all ages.

Beautiful! We didn't want to leave!
I stayed at The River House a couple of weeks ago with my mom, sister, and six-year-old niece. We couldn’t have picked a nicer place for our vacation. The house is in town but tucked away off of a private road. While we were there, we felt as if we were in some faraway, secluded retreat; but the convenience of shopping, restaurants, tourist attractions etc. was only minutes away. The house itself is gorgeous; it is evident that a lot of love and care has gone into maintaining this home. And it is stocked with all of the essentials that you might need, plus some extras. We arrived to find fresh flowers and a basket with maple syrup and pancake mix on the island in the kitchen. Joe and Sue also supplied us with enough coffee to get us through the entire week. Also, the views from the house are amazing and the grounds made me just want to sit and relax and take in all of the beautiful scenery. One of my favorite parts of the whole trip was getting up early in the morning and having my coffee on a little bench that is tucked away at the end of one of the trails, overlooking the river. All in all, The River House was the highlight of our trip; and our only regret was that we did not spend more time there!

Secluded Paradise
We visited Maine last year for the first time and loved it so much, we had to include it in our travel plans again this year. We decided to stay a little longer and bring our dog this time, and found this lovely gem in Orrington just south of Bangor. We were planning on using this as a home base from which to make day trips all over Maine, but we loved it so much, we only left once to go visit friends we made last year and twice to pick up groceries. On our last night here, we realized we hadn't been out to eat in the area, so we made a trip out for local fare. We also felt obligated...since we were there....to drive around Bangor and see what it was all about. That's a round-about way of saying we were so comfortable and satisfied with the house and its location along the river, that we never really got the itch to leave! Sue and Joe have thought of everything starting with all the fixings for pancakes our first morning there....which we managed to stretch out for our first three mornings! The house is completely round! It's really a ranch with a walk-out lower level. Kitchen, living, dining, and half bath upstairs and a wall of windows you wouldn't believe offering a panoramic view of the Penobscot River! We were mesmerized for hours. The lower level has THREE bedrooms (we only needed the one since it was just the two of us and our little dog) and two full baths AND a laundry room. There are a couple of seating areas up in the yard to watch the River tides roll in and out....or the bald eagles soar by or catch a fish! We got in the habit of sitting on the floating dock with our feet in the water at high tide. You can swim in the river or take out one of their kayaks available for use too. Sue and Joe were very accommodating and informative hosts. They have thought of everything. The kitchen is fully equipped, there are supplies for dogs and children. Soap, cleaning, and laundry supplies too. It has quality furniture and is beautifully and lovingly decorated. We felt right at home.

Beautifu!
The River House far exceeded our expectations! We decided to make a 4 day trip to Maine to visit a sick family member on very short notice. The owners were fabulous and very accommodating! The house is very spacious and met all our needs. We were able to have family that lives locally come to the house and share a sit down meal with plenty of room. I had surgery 2 days prior to our arrival and I cannot express enough how comfortable the house was for all of us. The owners also provided us with kayaks and lifejackets that my children (ages 17 and 22) throughly enjoyed. My only regret is that we could not stay longer.
