About this cabin rental
The original cabin was built circa 1930, and remains true to this day to it's beginnings; however some years later the kitchen, bath and bedroom were added to offer more space and the modern conveniences. The log walls in the living room are chinked with real buffalo hide and all the décor pays homage to the history and settling of the area. We have displayed a collection of Indian related items and artwork, as well as memorabilia of the old west, homesteading, hunting and trapping...all of which were a part of Black Hills history. The cabin sits on several acres, sharing a border with Forest Service, and only about 1500 ft. from the entrance to Custer State Park, one of the largest state parks in the USA.
The large living room's focal point is a beautiful, native rock arched fireplace with a gas log to take the chill off on cool evenings as well as contribute to the cozy ambiance. There is a full-size sofa bed. With the queen bed and double bed in the bedroom, there is room for up to six people to stay. There is a large, flat screen TV also in the living room, and access to internet. We do have a washer and dryer available for longer-stay guests. The charming country kitchen has a wonderful, huge window above the sink, affording a lovely view. And, the kitchen is equipped with full-size appliances, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, dishes, pots and pans. We also stock basic staples such as coffee, sugar, salt and pepper, and also condiments like ketchup and mustard. We are actually licensed as a B&B, but instead of preparing a meal for you at a set time and place, we simply provide you with some fresh foods in the fridge, fresh fruits, cereals and most often something freshly baked. The well water here is so good you will not want bottled water, and has been tested periodically for safety. We have bicycles for your use, with a hiking, bicycle paved trail adjacent which goes to Custer. In Custer, this paved trail joins the Mickelson Trail, which is a rails-to-trails pathway which transverses the entire Black Hills south to north, with many trail heads to access sections.
If you like wildlife watching, just sit outside (or simply look out any window in the cabin) in the morning or maybe at sunset and don't be surprised if you see deer or turkey watching you. We will keep a supply of feed available to give them a treat, but be warned that if you do, they will be back!
As owners, we take pride in keeping the cabin up to your expectations. We do our own cleaning, and do not charge a cleaning fee. We are the new owners and our goal will be to do all we can to ensure your visit here is pleasant.
NEWS BULLETIN: We have just finished building another cabin on the Stockade Lake Cabin property. This will enable a larger family or group of friends to book both cabins and have more space and bathrooms! Or, for just two or three guests who don't need the space of the big cabin and want to save money, as "Hunter's Cabin" will be available at a much lower rate. The vrbo listing number for Hunter's Cabin is 1349230, so please check it out. The new cabin is a rustic type, one room concept with full bath and kitchen, and covered porch. I have included some pics of Hunter’s cabin on this site, so you can see what is available if you are needing two cabins on same location

Was a great location during a very busy time due to the bike rally. Felt safe and was easy to find and come and go. Plenty of space yet cozy. Beautiful quiet mornings and evenings.
The one issue was it stated there was internet but it did not work, however probably just as well, kept me from doing too much work on vacation :)

Roberta was a great hostess, who walked us through everything about the cabin, was available if we needed her, but left us alone. The cabin was spacious, decorated with unique antiques and replicas, had a great front porch with a view of Stockade Lake. The location was right at Custer State Park entrance and about five minutes from the town of Custer. Most other attractions were close by, so it was the perfect location for visiting Mount Rushmore, hiking, biking, kayaking, seeing lots of wildlife, visiting caves, and shopping. We had never been to the Black Hills and thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay!

We felt instantly welcomed and at home. This is a fully furnished cabin with all the comforts of home. Charming decor, a little bit Native American and a little bit Country and whole lot cozy.

This cabin is the perfect location for visiting Custer, SD and surrounding area. Roberta was a terrific hostess, complete with fresh fruit and blueberry muffins upon our arrival. Although we never needed anything, no doubt she would have been very accessible and responsive to any needs. An added bonus was seeing deer in the yard each morning and evening.

Convenient location to the sights. Private location and interesting historical decor adds to the experience of the Black Hills. Lots of amenities that make you feel like it's your home too.

The location of the cabin is just up the road from the entrance to Custer State Park, which is a beautiful park with many lakes, hiking trails, lodges/restaurants. It’s also close to Mt. Rushmore which is a must see. The cabin itself is incredible with the original living room built in the 1930s with a gorgeous rock fireplace and large front window looking out onto Stockade Lake. My husband and I drank our coffee every morning and watched the deer every evening from the big front porch deck, which is one of my many favorite memories of this trip to the Black Hills. Roberta, the owner, was there to greet us when we arrived and even left us with homemade pistachio muffins, which were delicious! We had an issue with the bathroom sink draining very slowly, and it was fixed immediately and with no inconvenience to us. It is a beautiful cabin in a beautiful setting, and we hope to be back someday soon.

Cabin was cluttered with a lot of stuff! Cabin had a very musty smell! The walk up too the cabin was long and rocky! Price was high for only two adults!

Roberta is the best hostess. She's very sweet and wants to make sure you are happy. The cabin is very charming and clean. There are plenty of plates, utensils, etc. The view is fantastic. The location is excellent to get into Custer State Park or the heart of Custer. There is no a/c, but it was not necessary during our stay in early July. I assume it's rarely necessary. I highly recommend this to couples looking for a quiet getaway.

This cabin is truly a home away from home. Roberta was beyond welcoming and so very kind. This cozy cabin is in the perfect location and allowed us to experience and see so many different things that South Dakota has to offer.

Beautiful property, quiet location (at least before Memorial Day!). Walking distance to Stockade Lake and a beautiful walk in the forest surrounding it. Roberta's place is clean and stocked with thoughtful treats for us boarders. Recommended stay.

Everything was great, except for extremely spotty WiFi and no Dish network. We made due but expected those amenities to be there. The location is great and the cabin looks just as is advertised. I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The pictures of the interior of the cabin don’t do it justice. Very charming, clean and comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised at how large the living room was. Large window with a great view of Stockade Lake and surrounding mountains. Frequently saw deer on the property. Would love to come again.

Roberta is a wonderful host. She communicated with us regularly before our stay providing us with clear directions to easily find the cabin. Upon arrival, she cheerfully met us at the door, making us feel very welcome, with details about the cabin, i. e. WiFi, laundry area, trash, and her phone number in case we had questions. There were fresh muffins for us as well as orange juice and English muffins. What a lovely surprise!
The cabin itself is fantastic. The bed was very comfortable, the best we had on our 3-week trip. The kitchen is well-equipped and the dining area was pleasant for our evening meals. There were fresh flowers on the table. Roberta has furnished the cabin with many nice touches. Our favorite thing about the cabin was the front porch that overlooks the lake. We spent a lot of time there enjoying the view, watching deer, and eating delicious pie from the Purple Pie Place in Custer (don’t miss it!).
Custer State Park is a gem with great hiking trails, the bison and burros, the beautiful scenery. Roberta’s cabin was the icing on the cake and we are happy to recommend it. You won’t be disappointed.

Our three day stay at Roberta's Cabin was perfect. Location was well located a few miles from main town and a short drive to the entrance to Customer. The views from the large porch were amazing. The cabin is an excellent balance between providing the cabin feel while offering the amenities of one's home. Roberta was extremely welcoming and provided all the small amenities that really put this cabin above the rest - access to laundry, fire pit, tv, plenty of towels, etc. The cabin is very spacious. Roberta provides some key perks like home made muffins, fruit, orange juice and some other small things that put this cabin above any other. My girls are a little spoiled and like the convenience of a nicer hotel but they loved this cabin even more because of all the extras. There is even a great small fishing spot right off Stockade lake that we went to every night. Great experience and hope to be back!

The Stockade Lake Cabin was perfect for my family and I to use as basecamp as we explored the Black Hills and surrounding areas. The place was clean, well stocked, and had plenty of room for us three to hang out. Dining on the deck was a great way to start and end the days. Wish we had more time to spend here and will definitely be back! Roberta was great!

This property sits right on the edge of Custer State Park which is an ideal location for all things South Dakota. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, motorcycling or exploring nature this place has something for you. The property owner and her son greeted me upon arrival and were very inviting. It was basically like staying with an aunt for a week. Once I began my stay I was never bothered once for anything and she was only 100 feet away if I needed anything. Comfortable beds and furniture, nothing was outdated or worn out.

Wonderful experience
The cabin was very clean and had all the items we needed for a comfortable stay. Roberta was very accommodating and allowing us to use her kayaks. We loved the view from the deck and spent quite a bit of time out there just watching the traffic go by and the animals. Our grandkids had a great time. Would recommend this place. It was also very close to Custer which made it convenient for grocery shopping and restaurants and other shopping. It was also located close enough to all the attractions to get there within a short timeframe. We overall enjoyed it very much

Beautiful Property
Beautiful cabin and grounds. Only downfall is no A/C. Would not recommend children under 10 staying there. Roberta is very accommodating and there were plenty of supplies and towels, etc. Very clean place to stay as well and cozy.

Black Hills Magic!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Stockade Lake Cabin! Our host thought of everything and made us feel welcome from the start! The cabin was an experience in itself with the decor and view from the back deck. It was close to town, but remote enough to get the feel of the hills. Highly recommend this awesome place!

wonderful
have been in many vrbos, however, this is the first where the hostess had muffins, chocolate, juice, etc. for us when we arrived so we wouldn't have to go the store right away. Roberta is the best!!

Piece of heaven in the heart of the black hills.
Wonderful experience. The owner is great, and went out of her way with small details from fresh fruit and muffins to orange juice and refreshments in the fridge. The cabin is a living part of local history with all the comforts of home included. Too many details to list!
Location is perfect as well. Far enough from town to get away from the crowd, but close enough to get supplies when needed. Right outside the entrance to Custer state park and close to Rushmore. Lots of wildlife around, and right in the yard!
Wonderful stay, only wish we were there longer than 4 nights.
Thank you Roberta!

Beautiful Cabin/Home in Custer
Roberta... Thank you!!! This is our second stay in your fabulous cabin/home with all of the extra bells and whistles you have added. All of your hospitality was wonderful. Again... We have stayed in many VRBO properties and yours is #1. We hope to bring our 4 year old great grandson with us next year. Wow! We left a day before your snowstorm. Our weather was spectacular. The wildlife we saw this year was incredible. Big horn sheep, mountain goats, deer and turkeys. We hope to see you next year. Susan & Tony (Kansas City, Mo)

Wonderful cabin stay
We stayed here for 5 glorious days. Fantastic location right outside west entrance to Custer State Park. Easy drive to all the major lodges and trails in the park and two miles to the Center of Custer, 10 minutes toCrazy Horse. And the cabin was beautifully decorated and the host was so-welcoming. Great views and right across from Stockade lake. We could have stayed another 5 days if our scheduke had allowed.
