About this house rental
Welcome to 'RiverWest', a little piece of 'Paradise' on the Russian River. At our place you will discover the true meaning of “on the river” with what may be the best combination of panoramic views and easy access to the Russian River. This truly is an idyllic setting! And our reviews reflect that fact. Perfect for a romantic getaway, or vacation for the whole family.
Our Location:
In the redwoods, above the wide, lazy curve of water, with the tree-lined ridges fading to the west, our vacation home offers a tranquil and private setting for relaxation and that 'getaway feeling.' The north and west walls are almost entirely glass, which creates a light and open atmosphere, giving you a sense of freedom and flight as you gaze at the the osprey, gull, and heron. Through every moment of your day you’re surrounded by this expansive view of the river and mountains that few other places have. And, when looking is not enough, step down the stairs to the riverbank to use the four single kayaks, or row boat (in season) to enjoy the wild, scenic lower river from Duncans Mills to the ocean.
The home is located about a 3/4 mile from Duncans Mills, a quaint little town with coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping for art and collectables. "Gold Coast" the coffeeshop with daily fresh baked pastries, as well as Cape Fear and The Blue Heron restaurants offer full dining. The ocean, and all the great Sonoma Coast Beaches are about seven miles west. On hot summer days, when the rest of California is 100 degrees or more, the soothing ocean breeze cools our place into the 70-80's.
Our Home:
The two-story home is nested on the side of a hill overlooking the river. The top floor is 950 sq. ft. with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, living room and kitchen. One bedroom has a queen bed and a beautiful view of the river and mountain, and has its own 8X16 foot deck. The view is like being on the bow of a ship at sea. The second bedroom has a bunk bed for the kids and also has double doors leading to its sunny morning deck. The bathroom has a Kohler corner shower with curved glass enclosure and a sink from France. The living/dining room is open an airy with large picture windows and doors to the deck. The remodeled kitchen has stainless steel and black granite countertops with new appliances. The 1st floor studio offers 650 sq. ft. with a bedroom, bathroom, and combined living, dining, and kitchen area. There is a comfy queen bed in the spacious bedroom that also has a 8X16 foot deck with bistro table and chairs outside the French doors. The beautifully tiled bathroom has a separate tub and shower. The kitchen has is equipped with the basic utensils and dishes for preparing your meals.
Together, both floors offer 1600 sq. ft. of living space with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and two kitchens! The house will sleep 6. The lower flat is private. The floors are accessible by two sets of stairs on the outside of the house. There is no stairs inside the building from floor to floor. There are numerous decks and two terraces with patio seating. This makes a perfect setup for vacationing with Mom and Dad, extended families, or friends.
Encircling the home on two levels is 700 sq. ft. of barefoot-friendly Trex decking with bistro table and chairs. Another terrace has a Weber 3 burner gas grill and more patio seating, and a fire kettle. All decking, stairs, and patio areas have railing or fencing to safeguard young children.
THE IMPORTANT HOUSE RULES BEFORE BOOKING :
BRING YOUR OWN BATH TOWELS. Bath mats and kitchen towels are provided.
THERE IS NO SMOKING IN THE HOME.
PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
6 PERSON LIMIT (ANYONE OVER 2 YRS. OF AGE) ON THE PROPERTY AT ALL TIMES. No other guests are allowed to visit during the day or night, no exceptions.
Grounds:
Beyond the decks, we have upper and lower terrace areas surrounded by the natural riparian forest - massive redwoods, maple, river willow and buckeye trees, with ferns, and sorrel beneath. We leave the vegetation in its natural state to support the redwood's ecosystem and the great variety of animal life that abounds in the area. We have no neighbors downstream; we look into the river forest as it continues to the west. Upstream, are two undeveloped lots filled with forest; so, we have great privacy and seclusion. There are masonry steps and gravel at the bank making it easier to get in and out of the water with the kayaks for young and old. Kayaks are available in summer and most likely in spring and fall, but not during winter due to high water and fast currents. With any question about conditions I determine the availability of the water craft.
Rental Options:
There is a 2 night minimum (3 nights on holidays) on all rentals.

Spending the weekend on the river was wonderful. The house is well maintained. I would recommend this house.

This property was such a lovely spot on the river. We wanted a getaway from the city and be in nature. There are so many beautiful birds that constantly fly by the windows or land on the banks below the house. You could never leave the home and have a great time watching from the deck or big windows. You really feel transported somewhere else.
The beds were comfortable and the home remained a nice temperature since it was surrounded by trees that kept it shaded on many sides.
Cameron was very quick to respond to any question I had, which was much appreciated.
The only thing I might need improvement was the downstairs living space that had a musty smell that needed ventilating a bit when we arrived. But overall we would recommend this place to others and stay again ourselves.

The views from all the windows are astounding. We had such a relaxing time kayaking, swimming, and playing card games. The house is very clean and close to town. It feels very private and there is no one close by. We had a really great time here and will definitely return.

This is an amazing property! It is the perfect house on the river for a group of friends or two families. Kitchens are stocked, plenty of refrigerator space. The beds are comfortable. Super clean.
The access to the river is incredible. The boat and kayaks were lovely!
Cameron communicated clearly and quickly. We celebrated our 50 year birthdays here. It was so sad to leave because it was amazing. Highly recommend and will book again!

The most idyllic setting with fantastic split-level accommodation which exceeded out expectations. You're immersed in the riverside experience and wildlife-watching (seal, otters, herons, osprey, deer, etc).

We are a family of 6 adults and there was plenty of space. The 4 kayaks and the small dock on the river allowed us to paddle up and down the river or go swimming whenever we wanted. The wifi was good and we were able to work from the house and stream Netflix movies in the evening without issue.

Exterior of the home is disgusting. Mold, tree debris, fungus, bird droppings etc throughout the decks. Not very safe!
Many issues within the home. Water heater wasn’t working, occasional propane smell, scents of fungus, mold and mildew, flies everywhere inside, oven didn’t work, refrigerator is under the counter with no freezer, chemical odor from cleaning supplies, exterior lights not working in areas.
Apparently the host does take the initiative to assure a clean environment and take time to make sure that everything is operating correctly.
I will say that it has a great floor plan and beautiful views.

This location is perfect for a family that needs two living areas. It is right on the river and appealing to those who like to kayak or canoe. The drive to the coast is only 15-20 minutes.

What a relaxing, beautiful place! We enjoyed the comfortable, clean, well-kept, home with amazing views! We used the kayaks each evening to glide along the misty, foggy river. We enjoyed watching seals, otters, bats, and a variety of birds doing what they do in the wild. We loved being at the end of the road (very quiet) and lounging on the multiple decks. What a perfect long weekend to rejuvenate!

I have been to the Russian River area dozens of times and the location of this property allowed me to enjoy everything I loved about the area. The river is at your feet, easy access to the Armstrong State Park, family wineries and a short drive to the Sonoma coast. The property was clean, well kept and the communication from the owner was excellent. We were grateful to have the opportunity to stay at this property!

We had a great time at Riverwest! Nice house with wonderful views and very clean! Easy walk to Duncans Mills where you can spend time shopping at the cute shops and have a nice meal. Cameron our host, was very nice and communication with him was great! We enjoyed using the kayaks that are available to guests. We definitely want to come back again to this tranquil setting. Thanks again Cameron!

The property sits on the shaded side of the river bank. This time of year it is cool and with the morning fog it then makes it musty and damp. Leichen covers everything. There is sun in the late afternoon for a couple of hours on the deck but not much.
Though it was pointed out in the docs, we were disappointed that there weren’t any hand towels in the bathrooms. I’d rather pay a little extra for that convenience. We were asked to bring bath and beach towels..

The cabin is in a perfect location, secluded but not too far from shops and vineyards. Proximity to the river was key for us and we used the 4 kayaks every day. Communication with the host was easy and response was fast.

Everything positive that has been said about this property is true! The setting is beautiful; having the road washed out just beyond is a plus. The home is so comfortable! We had to search sometimes for the kitchen item but always found what we needed. We enjoyed the upper deck for coffee, the lower deck when wanting some warm sunshine, and we used the grill. Being able to kayak from the house was great! We also adventured to Armstrong Redwoods, Fort Ross, and several beaches. Although it is a 4000 mile round trip for us, we plan to return!

Great River House!
Had a ton of fun at this house, it has an excellent view of the water, and plenty of space for 2 groups to stay. We enjoyed the road closure toward Duncans Mills, walking our way to town. Had a blast by the river, would definitely stay here again!

The best get away on the Russian River!
Wow! This property is exactly how Cameron explains and more! Getting back into the property is like a fairytale with the overhanging trees and the artistic neighborhood perched clear up the hill. There's a convenient store within walking distance where you can get the items you need that surprisingly stayed open until 11p. (we stayed in early June)
The property is secluded, beautiful, and perfect for two sets of families/friends that need private entrances. The balconies on each level are fun to explore! Sit on the top and have your morning coffee while you watch the fog roll in, sit fireside with friends and tell stories (bring firewood it's $10 or more a small bundle by the coast), grab the kayaks and set off on a journey , or grab a fishing pole and bring in a bass with your kids.(like we did) The tv and all appliances worked great, there were plenty of supplies already in the house as well. (seasonings, blankets, pots/pans,blow dryer, toaster, cooking oils) There's also a BBQ on property if you do bring in that fish! Great for older kids, my 11 year old son loved it! The property is only a short drive to the adorable town of monte rio, 15 mins to the ocean water cliffside, and less than a 30 min drive south to Bodega bay where you can find great restaurants (The Tides has great scallops and clam chowder yummy) and shops, or go fishing off the jetty for $7 daily fee into the park.(Doran state park) The house is kept very clean and offers such a wonderful stay. Cameron was attentive, polite, and explained everything you needed to know IN DETAIL for you so you don't have to wonder about the house's details. He was available the whole trip for questions and we will be staying again if we make it down to the Russian river again. Thanks Cameron.

Magnificent
Five of us celebrated a birthday and Mother’s Day together at RiverWest. We had a wonderful time. The house is situated perfectly on the river for amazing views. We kayaked everyday from the house on our favorite stretch of the river. It is very private and wonderful. We walked to Duncan’s Mills and the Gold Coast Coffee Company from the house—an easy 20 minute walk. The beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were clean. Having two kitchens was a plus. The kitchens were ample enough to prepare three gourmet dinners for the group. We had every meal but one at the house. Everyone enjoyed the house, and we will definitely return.

Relaxing Family Getaway
We LOVED staying here. It is such a peaceful place to relax away from the stresses of everyday life. We had great quality time with our two teens--talking, playing board games, watching movies and, most fabulously, kayaking! Walking down a few steps to the river was heavenly. We will stay again!

Beautiful and Peaceful
Sitting above a quiet stretch of the river, watching the fog slowly retreat while ducks and herons skim across the water. That was our every morning experience. And the rest of the days were great too.
Cameron's place gave us a great base for a very relaxing week in the RRV. Easy access to lots of activities, walking distance to Duncans Mills, and a perfect place to just chill when that's all we wanted to do.
Cameron gave us lots of great info, made sure we knew what was up with the property, and just generally helped make it a great vacation.

Perfection on the river
IT. WAS. PERFECT. I have no need to ever look for a different place to stay on the Russian River. The place was beautiful, COMFORTABLE, quiet, and allowed for us to really spread out if we wanted to, or to hang out together. The two levels of the house function as two separate units (separate entrances), allowing for real privacy at night, and togetherness the rest of the time. The bed! Oh, the comfortable BED! I found myself getting up early so that I could sit on the couch and just watch the wildlife on the river. We had thought we'd go out to dinner for the last night of our stay, but then we realized that none of us wanted to sit at a restaurant and waste the time we could be spending at the house, basking in the peacefulness of the river. Cameron was GREAT to communicate with. The location is spectacular -- right on the river, and perfectly situated to go on short drives to hike at Armstrong Woods or explore Jenner and beaches, to drive a little further and visit Fort Ross or Point Reyes or all the gorgeous backroads of Sonoma County. None of us wanted to leave. I can't wait to go back!

Wonderful Weekend
We celebrated my husband’s birthday with our daughter and her family. Riverwest was the perfect house for a family gathering. The cozy living room with the full river view, the spacious kitchen, and the nicely situated bedrooms were ideal. It was very clean and well appointed with everything we needed. Next time we’ll plan a stay in warmer weather so we can better enjoy the outdoor patios and river access. Cameron was an excellent host.

Privacy along the Russian River
Top and bottom living spaces have a great view of the Russian River. We were unable to enjoy the wrap around decking due to the storm, but the view is just as good. We did lose power so I suggest bringing flashlights and battery operated lanterns. This is CA and the power goes out in the good and bad weather. The road is quiet above the house and the neighbors are as well. It is a very peaceful area (I can only speak of off season). Both living spaces were very clean and open. We found the shops were open limited days and hours. The Safeway in Gurneville is the best place to shop for groceries, the little market in Monte Rio didn't have much fresh produce or meat. We ate at the Northwood Restaurant, which was great simple food for a reasonable price plus the Long Island Ice Teas were terrific! We were not impressed with The Tides in Bodega Bay and very $$$. Our host, Cameron stayed in contact with us if we had any questions.
