Aloha, we'd like to share with you the story of our property, Pu'u Menehune, which was, until recently, bull pasture for Parker Ranch. Our pristine 13-acre parcel, located in the heart of Paniola (Hawaiian cowboy) country, is blessed with a meandering stream, abundant waterfalls, and unsurpassed views of sacred Mauna Kea ('White Mountain') volcano.
As you will experience when you hike Pu'u Menehune, this area was the summer playground for Hawaiian Ali'i (royalty) who came to Waimea for its cool upslope weather, open spaces, fun outdoor activities, and beautiful vistas. This is truly God's Country!
The 1920's paniolo style home (bungalow) was formerly part of the historic Waimea Hotel and was saved by the owners from the wrecking ball when it was moved to its present location and painstakingly restored to its former glory -- a project that took the owners over 2-years to complete. Each room is furnished with period antiques and fixtures including an old, double drain, porcelain kitchen sink, period porcelain pedestal sinks in the bathrooms, chandeliers and period lighting in every room, high ceilings with original crown moldings, as well as a wood burning fireplace with ample firewood, and a wrap-around porch to entice you out of the house for the evening. During your stay, you will feel as though you stepped back in time, to a time when life was easier, when relaxation was permissible, when sitting on the front porch was the evening's entertainment.
On a clear, moonlit night, you will be treated to unsurpassed views of Mauna Kea. Feel free to do a 'moon walk' under the star-filled skies. Greet the morning with your fresh cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise as you gaze across Parker Ranch's vast pastures and grazing cattle. Watch as the sun dances across two beautiful pu'u (cinder cones) fronting the property graced with frisky horses and Jurassic Park-like scenery surrounding the bungalow-house.
Pu'u Menehune is surrounded by beautiful, native forests, horse and cattle ranches, pastures, and unspoiled forests, and has its own flowing stream with numerous waterfalls and ponds nurturing moss-covered-river-rock. Look and you will be treated to the sight of Ring-Knecked and Kalij Pheasants, Turkeys, California and Francolin Quail, as well as endemic honey-creepers and birds of prey like the Hawaiian owl (Pueo) and Hawaiian hawk (I'o). Enjoy the beauty of your own stream and the many pristine waterfalls which cascade along its course forming numerous ponds. The property is partially forested with endemic Koa, Ohia, Iliahi ("sandalwood"), Hapu'u ferns, Maile, and other native plants. Fruit trees include apple, peach, pear, plum, cherry, orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, and clementine trees. Our 13 acre ranch offers you privacy, peace and quiet, hiking, and nature walks along our pristine stream just a two-minute walk from the house, breathtaking waterfalls, and unsurpassed vistas of Mauna Kea and of the Parker Ranch lands and is vast pastures below, as well as abundant and unspoiled nature -- an artist's and photographer's delight! Located at a 3,300 foot elevation, the property offers constantly changing weather patterns and it is not unusual to find yourself standing in a cloud or mountain mist.
Although you will feel like you are in a world of your own, the charming town of Waimea is just 5 minutes away by car and offers all modern conveniences. The only thing we ask is that you join us in cherishing and protecting our historic home and this beautiful land -- truly God's Country!
Our historic, plantation bungalow features 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a day-bed, a gourmet kitchen having an antique porcelain double sink, modern stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, gas stove with an electric oven located on an island, microwave, kitchen fully furnished with dishes (some antique), glasses (including wine glasses), cutlery, pots, pans, baking pans, spices, and partly stocked pantry. Kona coffee and various teas are sometime available in the 'coffee bar'. Other features include high ceilings with original mouldings, antique lighting, wood burning fireplace, wrap around porch to enjoy those breathtaking views, vistas from every room, cable t.v., DVD player, CD stereo (music will never sound better), and a walk-in, slate shower with panoramic views! The two bedrooms have queen sized beds that sleep 4 adults. One bedroom has a princess cradle for an infant or toddler. The living room has a 'day-bed' for a fifth adult or two if you like it cozy. A stacked washer/dryer is also available.
We promise you a memorable stay! With Aloha!

We have stayed at Pu’u Menehune several times in the past and always leave with the intent of returning again. We absolutely love the peace and tranquillity that this amazing property offers, from the panoramic views of Mauna Kea, to the lush pastoral landscape. The home is comfy cozy with all the necessities for cooking, lounging and the perfect beds for sweet dreams!
The convenience of modern day living is literally minutes away, along with a great Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and multiple farm to table eateries to choose from.
We continue to be grateful to have the opportunity to stay at Pu’u Menehune and can’t wait to return!

Perfect location. Perfect weather. Exactly what we needed

Though this house is marketed as a stately home with precious antiques and decor, it is not. Perhaps it was 15 or 20 years ago; but the well worn and broken old furniture, cracked and moldy windows and walls, and overgrown brush and trees surrounding the old house show the test of time in this beautiful ranch country. The cleaning service seems to do their best between guests, but for those who expect more than surface cleanliness, I would recommend looking elsewhere. We were very disappointed.

Quiet, peaceful and beautiful, this location is ideal for anyone who wants to avoid the business of Kona or Hilo but still access the island hotspots within 2 hours. Waimea is very close and has all amenities, but you still feel like you are in the country.

My husband and I stayed at this home for a vacation on the Big Island, but he needed to work for a few hours each day--the wifi was excellent. He set up on the dining room table which looks out to Mauna Kea. So many birds! The koa trees planted on the property are habitat for many, many birds. Waimea is at 2700 feet elevation so bring a hoodie! I wore shorts and a hoodie and was comfortable running around town. Hapuna beach is just down the hill, we went almost every day. This property is the perfect location for my husband and me (a birder): quiet, beautiful, close enough to the beach.

Loved this historic ranch house. Will definitely return.

This property is quiet and beautiful to look out over, the building is in need of repair, decks and railing are to the point of replacing because of severe deterioration, windows in bedroom hadcardboard and paper to plug the gaps, much of the furniture was in various states of disrepair ! Now that being said - why did you stay? We booked a 7 week rental and the property warranted us to overlook the hassle of finding another place in the 11th hour. This property has so much potential - it’s a unique rental, the feeling of solitude is there, magnificent views, a welcoming and great property mgr, and we hope the place gets the attention it deserves in the future. Respectfully submitted Jerry P

We have stayed at Pu’u Menehune several times over the years and always leave with the anticipation of returning in the near future.
If you appreciate majestic views, all the comforts of home in a very private setting along with the convenience of being near modern daily essentials than this is definitely the place for you to stay!
We are truly grateful to Peter and Gail for sharing this truly amazing experience.

This was our 3rd stay at Pu'u Menehune and it just keeps getting better and better everytime we return to this magical spot. If you are seeking a beautiful, perfectly dialed down, comfortable, private place with views to die for, this is the place for you! The close proximity to Waimea town and all of its dining & shopping, etc (5 minutes or so?) is such a huge plus--tho you won't know you're so very close to town when you're on this spectacular property/in the home as it feels like you're miles away in your own little bubble of heaven. Amazing experience, so very special, which is why we keep going back! Hosts Peter & Gail are fantastic as are their kind & conscientious caretaker staff. If you do have the privilege of staying in this very special place, please be respectful of the all the hard work & sensitivity that went into creating this one of a kind gem that needs to be respected and cherished. (If you do stay at Pu'u Menehune, make sure to check out the photo album in the sunroom that photo-documents the amazing process that went into the creation of this very special place. You will be amazed!)
Thank you to Peter & Gail for sharing Pu'u Menehune with our very grateful family!

My wife unexpectedly needed a place to stay while visiting relatives in Waimea. This home gave her a true Hawaiian ranch experience! Peter was very helpful, rqesponsive, and accommodating.

A little peek at heaven...
This charming home nestled in the green pastures of Parker Ranch's past. The wrap around porch and plethora of windows was enchanting. We loved watching the horses graze and the many varieties of birds and each with their own special song. We were blessed to call Pu'u Menehune home for far too short a time!

Magical stay on a misty mountain.
The property is more beautiful than the listing. Peter is a very responsive host. We saw so many birds each day. We even had multiple sightings of the very rare i'o and pueo. It was our favorite part of the island and it's just a few minutes from Waimea Town. I hope to stay here again.

Gem
This is an incredible property--it is meant for people who love and appreciate old/restored homes. The views of Mauna Kea are unmatched and the lot the house sits on is so large you feel like you are the only people around despite being only a 5-10 minute drive into Waimea town. It is the perfect place for a relaxing, secluded getaway. We cannot wait to come back.

Private, secluded, lovely historical ranch bungalow with view of Mauna Kea.
We loved staying at this property! It was a quiet restful retreat in the hills of Waimea with beautiful view of ranch land all around and the volcano. It is a beautiful restored ranch house decorated from the 1800s.

Pu'u Menehune is Wonderful
Beautiful, serene location set amongst the rolling hills of upcountry Hawaii. The only "neighbor" you can see from the house are horses. The short hike to the on-site waterfall is lovely and worth doing. The house is rustic but well cared for and very clean. It was a most enjoyable and comfortable 4 days for us.

FABULOUS Memorable Experience!
This was our 2nd stay at Puu Menehune. Last stay was 11 years ago (so much fun to read our previous guest book comments during our recent stay!). We were so pleasantly surprised at how the home has been upgraded & maintained. Our stay was nothing short of spectacular & it was very difficult to leave for the 2nd half of our vacation on the Kohala Coast. Next time, we may skip the Coast and do our entire stay upcountry at Puu Menehune. The home is so well appointed, comfortable & the drop dead Mauna Kea sunrises are to die for! So much privacy, yet just mere minutes away from supermarkets, restaurants, etc. Truly the best of both worlds. We have all agreed that we will be back, for sure--and it won't be an 11-year gap! We are focused on planning a 2022 spring or summer stay at this truly magical place. Thank you SO VERY MUCH, Peter!
Warmest aloha ~ The Patton Ohana :))

Peaceful stay.
Great location with beautiful views of the valley. Very quiet at night, but close to town for groceries/dinners. Saturday was a great farmers market with lots of local produce. Good base camp for side trips to waterfalls and beaches, or just stay and enjoy the peace.

We loved our stay! The house had everything we needed and was incredibly cozy. The views of the surrounding farms and Mauna Kea from the property exceeded all expectations.

Location is great in the rolling hills, convenient for travel to any side of the island. Private waterfalls a plus, though trail can be a bit slippery and hard for some people. Kitchen was fantastic, only thing missing was a spatula! Internet worked great for two people working remotely.Couple of negatives: the windows vibrate a lot on windy days making lot of noise, disturbing sleep. Also the vast Land has knee deep grass everywhere so not a place you can go walking. Owner should clear some paths for walking.

Beautiful small farmhouse in the foothills
Very quiet, pretty, antique-filled house with a gorgeous view. The daytime temp fluctuated between 60-70 degrees and the weather changed constantly (personally I really like that). Located about 5 mins outside of “downtown” Waimea- convenient to stores, restaurants, etc. Twenty mins to the coast/beaches. If you like rentals with character— this is the rental for you.

Old but comfortable, Hawaii
If you want to get a feel for this island and it's history, this is the perfect place. It is very, very comfortable , but emphasizes its history and rural location. A perfect place to experience old Hawaii. Not a place if you want a modern, resort atmosphere. The windows are old (but clean), there are insects but definitely under control. The land and plantings are magnificent. As I said, if you want pristine, this is not the place. If you want comfortable , real and authentic, then this is your place.

Staymazing!
This unique property was the perfect location for our family to hike, cook, star gaze and enjoy crisp Waimea nights in front of the fireplace! The owners moved and restored the former 'Hotel Waimea' to a bull pasture with breathtaking views of Mauna Kea. The home was furnished with period pieces to create an enchanting home filled with character. Enjoying a fire and fresh baked dessert, we asked our teens to imagine what stories the walls of this historic residence would tell if they could speak! Who stayed here? Paniolo moving cattle? Locals heading up country to enjoy the cool air? Gangsters? Hunters? Late afternoons on the lanai watching Mauna Kea light up were magnificent, especially when the pueo (owl) and io (hawk) soared by. We made trips to the waterfall on property and spent nights out on the lawn star gazing. The house had everything we needed to cook simple meals with local ingredients from the Farmers Markets and very comfy beds. There are amazing ohia, mountain apple, kahili ginger and native plants, home to Jackson Chameleons that mesmarized our son. We absoutely loved our stay! Mahalo.

An amazing non-traditional Hawaii stay
Can't say enough good things about this home and property!
Imagine being on a white sand beach with crystal blue waters, watching the sun set over the Kohala coast, then driving 20 minutes to 13 acres, a roaring fire, and a gourmet kitchen!
The wrap around deck is the perfect place to greet the day, watch Mauna Kea as the moody weather plays with the light.
Walk down the hill for 5 minutes, a bit of bushwhacking, then you're at your own private 15-foot waterfall with a deep plunge pool.
It was really cool to see how the owners saved this antique house, relocated it, and gave it new life.
We spent 18 incredible days at this property and are already hatching plans on how we'll get back there!

Always leave wanting to come back for more!
We have had the pleasure and privilege to visit Pu’u Menehune on several occasions and always leave wanting to come back for more of this truly special place.
Pu’u Menehune is tucked away in a serene private setting, yet only within minutes from dining, supermarkets, horseback riding and beautiful beaches.
The property’s majestic views of Mauna Kea are breathtaking especially at sunrise.
We particularly enjoy sitting on the deck admiring the horses in the nearby pastures along with the picturesque landscape of Ohia, Cherry Blossom, Protea and Plum trees.
The home itself is incredibly cozy with the perfect balance of antique touches complimented by modern conveniences.
The beds are so comfy cozy!
We have been tempted to ask the owners where they got them, but come to the realization that we would not enjoy them as much at home as we do at Pu’u Menehune;0)
We are already planning our next trip to Pu’u Menehune to enjoy more peace and tranquility.
A big MAHALO (thank you) to Peter and Gail for continuing to share “ Heaven on Earth” with us!

John and Victoria Hawai’i Vacation
The house we rented was simply decadent, dirty and spider infested. The laundry facilities were very poor i.e. dryer not vented and the washer extremely noisy. The windows were very dirty and spider webs in the corners. The exterior of the house of which had a surround porch , the eaves were dirty and had many spiders and webs with dead insects in them..

Family time on the Big Island
What a special place to spend time with my daughters and granddaughters. The home is our style-funky antiques, comfortable and wide-open with lots of windows(although you could use more screens so the windows could stay open at night). Great views. A zillion stars. Close to town. I think we'll be back!

Big Island treasure
This was our 7th trip to the Big Island. We finally ventured out of the Kohala Coast resort areas and into Waimea. And we are so glad we did! The house is charming and there is a wonderful picture book explanation of how the house got there and all the love that the homeowners put into it. We woke to the sound of roosters crowing and enjoyed a nice cup of coffee while watching the sunrise over Mauna Kea. Our 18 month old loved to see the horses running in the pasture down the hill and would wave to them all day. We picked Meyer lemons and clementines from the trees for snacks. We enjoyed the glorious smell of gardenias from the bush outside. We made full use of the gas stove to cook great meals. We found hidden gems in Waimea like the Waimea Butcher (go see Mills and enjoy his awesome dedication to his craft). And their was high speed internet so we could occasionally connect for job duties if we had to.
I could go on and on and we will be back.

idyllic cottage
This is our second visit to this relaxing, lovely spot. There is so much to experience in this region of the Island, and this is the perfect convenient location for your explorations. The cottage is by far the most organized and stocked residence I have ever rented through VRBO.
The views are gorgeous and the cottage is lovable and you will love it too!

And the wind kept blowing
What a beautiful spot on earth! When the sun is shining you will think you are in heaven. While there we experienced heavy trade winds that knocked out power lines. The house really isn’t built to keep occupants warm during days when temps are low as 58. The house is up on a hill in the cloud line so be prepared for wind and rain as well as sun. Despite the changes in weather it’s a beautiful spot from which to view the stars on a clear night and enjoy the fireplace, which we did often, on chillier nights and mornings. Oh, and the antique furniture is not functional so be prepared to live out of your suitcase.

The best place to stay on the Big Island!
Oh my gosh! I do not know where to start! We (family of 4) love staying off the beaten path, and Peter and Gail have the perfect place! Great for relaxing after a day of being a typical tourist or hanging out at the local farmer's markets. This 100 year-old renovated home is furnished with beautiful antiques and has all the modern conveniences. Super cozy and comfortable. Extra blankets were welcome on the few nights where the trade winds were blowing. The wrap-around porch is great and the views of Mauna Kea are amazing! The sun streaming through the windows into the sunroom and on the south facing porch are perfect for morning coffee and to watch the clouds and mist drift through the Wiamea area below. There is no light pollution and the star gazing is only better at the Mauna Kea visitor center (just an hour drive away). Beaches are only 20 minutes away! Great boogie boarding at Hapuna and awesome snorkling at "69 beach" and Spencer Beach.
I feel obligated to give a couple of shout outs...
- Hang Loose Boat Tours has a great snorkel trip where swimming with spinner dolphins is included along with great stories of the history of Hawaii. We stopped at Captain Cook Monument and snorkeled. The entire morning was incredible!! Captain Tim even told us about "Turtle Beach" which was just a 5 minute walk from the harbor. We saw about 10 turtles basking and swimming!
- On Saturdays, there is a road side bar-b-que on the way (like 3 minutes away from the house) to Waimea. I think it is called Hui Hui. The combo plate is a must! Best EVER!
- Mauna Kea Observatory Stargazing (Tue, Wed, Fri, & Sat) is incredible! The video about the observatories above is really interesting, but seeing nebula and other galaxies as well as planets in our own solar system is beyond words!!!
My brother and sister-in-law live in Wiamea and will be recommending Pu'u Menehune to their friends. We stayed ten days, and my family is looking forward to visiting again, and staying at Pu'u Menehune! Definitely God's Country!!
