The place was listed with laundry and a dryer. I saw from other reviews that it's supposed to be in the basement. But the basement door in the dining room was locked with a key and we couldn't access it. After telling the landlord, he ignored this and only responded about another thing. Then in the evening we saw that there was a light turned on in the basement behind the locked door, which made us feel even more uncomfortable.
The whole place is due for renovations and major cleaning. On a first glance it's kind of clean, but not really. Dust and dirty windows and left over toothbrush packing when one looks more closely.
The trashcans, mailbox and recycling bins were completely full on check-in, after communicating this the landlord arranged to have the recycling bins emptied, but not the trashcan nor the mailbox.
We didn't want to stay a second night and moved to a hotel instead and were glad we did.

Jason's rental is very clean and in a very quiet section of the West End.
A couple additional notes:
- LIVING ROOM has a very comfy love seat and a smart TV. It's small but functional. Decor is a bit Home Goods-y but it doesn't feel empty or echo-y.
- DINING ROOM/KITCHEN - really big table in the dining room and lots of space in the kitchen but it is outdated and very basic so bring your own cooking oil etc.
- BEDROOM(s) had a very comfortable bed and a/c window units in each, which is great for the summer.
- BATHROOM was clean and had plenty of towels.
- BACKYARD is shady and was convenient for the dog.
Of note: the listing included a washer/dryer, which is no longer there. When I mentioned it to the host, he immediately called, apologized, and offered a solution. I'm mentioning it here just in case VRBO doesn't adjust the listing promptly.
Overall, this place is clean and met all our needs. Jason is a very responsive host and was friendly on the phone and in messages.

The property was easy to access. It had a full kitchen, dining room, and nice-sized shaded backyard. It is in a quiet neighborhood. It was a nice crash pad for a getaway weekend.

This was a great old townhouse. Great parking and very clean. Easy walk to attractions and a charming neighborhood bar just around the corner.

Perfect place to end the day.

We enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It is up a short flight of stairs with more stairs up to the bedrooms. There have been some fresh renovations but maybe more to come. It is a rustic home, original hardwood floors, squeaky doors. Bathroom is in good Shae. Beds were very comfortable and internet and Netflix were perfect. We loved the location and could walk to restaurants and bars. Jason the host was very helpful when we wanted to get checked in a few minutes early to drop off luggage.

Quiet, close to everything and east to find.

As much as we enjoy the irregularities and imperfections of older places, this place was what I would refer to as a slum housing.
3.0
This is a bare bones property that is not a good value. Wifi was excellent and A/C window units kept us cool. The furniture did not match the property images. Most restaurants are a 20+ minute walk. The host was responsive when the cleaner forgot to leave fresh linens, but didn’t warn us ahead of time that the washer and dryer were in a basement that had water on the floor. We used the machines twice despite the host’s offer to cover an inconvenient laundry service. (Dryer vents into the basement and a constantly running dehumidifier might explain the water on the floor but the host suggested it was due to a city water runoff problem.) Bathroom is upstairs and window covering is soiled, discolored and does not fully cover the window.
Most of the furniture and kitchen items look second hand. Front porch and back yard not well kept.
We made the most of it, but again, not a great value.

A decent place to stay.

The house was easy to get to and in a good location. There was a piece of left over clothing from a different group found in one of the bedrooms. Communication about the stay was great but one message did go unanswered. Overall, solid trip.

Dog friendly, and close to Downtown! The property was basically as described. The bedrooms were great. The bathroom for fine except for some mold in and around the tub area. One major issue, for me, was the pull-out bed/ couch. It was just really dingy and gross. The couch was sunken and the mattress pad was old and stained. There were three adult women there and I felt very bad and embarrassed for the person who had to sleep there.

I see that another person posted a similar concern. I won’t be as harsh in my description as them. But I will echo that I don’t think the property description matches the reality of this property. And I’ll also say that the price we paid for a single night stay at this unit was a bit astronomical, given how the property actually turned out. I’ll give it 3 stars overall because the location is nice and it’s a fine place to stay. I mean it works, it’s nothing too run down. But it’s certainly not anything fancy or luxurious. The listing had it sounding like it was on the same level as a 5-star hotel. That’s definitely just not true. Upon entering the property the door wasn’t locked (because I think the lock mechanism is broken). So that was also a bit odd. The basement is pretty scary for anyone thinking they want to do laundry. I’m sure the owner is nice and all. I just think they should consider adjusting the price of the unit and also giving it a more accurate description. Comparing it to luxury is just not really that accurate. And with the price I paid, I definitely could have stayed in a luxury hotel. I dunno. I don’t like leaving lukewarm reviews, but I was definitely a bit disappointed, even though I found the unit overall to be sufficient/serviceable. I just think it should have costed less and been advertised more accurately.

I have been a VRBO user for many years and have never filed a negative review about a rental until now. I understand that properties don't precisely resemble the photographs or descriptions, and that some places are nicer than others, but the gap between description and reality here is egregious and created unsafe conditions for my family.
Here are some of the issues with the 'townhouse.' The living room smelled of dog urine and we could see an attempt to clean up a stain on the rug. There was mold and dirt around the bathtub in the bathroom described as 'new.' In the dirty, unfinished basement, you had to walk across pools of muddy water to reach the washer/dryer in the "private basement with your own washer and dryer." This was not only unclean but unsafe.
We entered the apartment via keycode but there was also a broken lockbox containing keys that would have allowed anyone to access the property. This also clearly posed a safety concern.
The bedrooms and bedding were described as such: "If you have ever stayed at a 5 star hotel you will draw similarities." That assertion is so inaccurate it is almost laughable. The beds and sleeper sofa in the living room were all described as "new" but that seemed very unlikely given their appearance and feel. Throughout, the furniture and walls were all battered, dirty and worn and the property generally unkempt.
Again, I understand that there are all kinds of properties on VRBO, some nicer than others, but this apartment was nothing like its description, with conditions that were not only unclean but unsafe, and, for the exorbitant price we paid for a single night (which VRBO will not permit me to reveal,) simply unacceptable. Stay elsewhere.

Perfect Spot in Portland
We needed a place to stay for a week while visiting friends in Portland with our dog and two kids in tow. The yard is fenced and perfect for a pooch. Beds were very comfortable. I took off a star because there are some maintenance things that need attention but nothing that made the stay terrible. Quiet little neighborhood with a playground very close. This fit our needs perfectly. It’s easy to walk to downtown and avoid the difficult parking there. Definitely check out the little cafe and shop “Smalls” a couple blocks away. Great food, coffee, matcha and they have frozen dumplings you can take home a prepare in your VRBO kitchen :) The host is very responsive and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

Good experience. Property was clean. It gave our family of 4 plenty of space
Great location. Appreciated Jason’s tips about Portland. If you are willing to eat meals at home, staying here will save money on food. Only minor hassle was street parking, but that was ver minor. I recommend this place.

RENTER BEWARE!!
I may be generous in giving this rental an overall 2-star rating. We rented for 5 days. But we DID NOT, COULD NOT stay there. First floor of kitchen and living room comfortable. 2 bedrooms and one bathroom on second floor. When we went upstairs, we immediately noticed that the risers on the stairs were high and the steps shallow. The stairs were steep. Especially since my wife has had one hip replacement and arthritis in the other hip. Both she and I felt unsafe going up and down those stairs. So we left and found the Westin Hotel in Portland--very nice. I immediately notified the owner. Then next day received automated response--How was your first night? Again notified him. Finally 3rd day, he responded. He said he understood our concerns about the stairs. 2 more automated responses--one to give a great recommendation. I asked for some remuneration of our fee, but he said no, then no further communication. Not at all what we expected. Renter Beware!

Great spot in Portland
The location is great to exploring many of the new restaurants in Portland's west end. Also, an easy walk downtown! Back yard is a great place to sit and adds a lot of the house.

Great Location
We loved the house but some essentials were missing. No kitchen glasses and no washcloths. Didn’t realize we shared backyard with neighbors but they were lovely.

Good for a short stay
While the comparison to a 5-star hotel is a bit absurd, the house was clean, the sheets were nice, and it was a 20-min safe walk to downtown Portland. Parking was not an issue for us and the Ohno Cafe was a great close spot for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Other than that, the house fit our need as a place to crash.

Adequate
Stay was fine. Everything was clean. Parking wasn’t optimal as I had a full size truck. It’s close to everything

Perfect for exploring Portland
The house is tucked into a typical residential area of Portland with a bunch of row homes. The place was very clean and the house and neighborhood were wonderfully quiet. It was easy to get to downtown Portland and close enough that young legs could likely even walk the distance. Also easy enough to hop in the car and explore the surrounding area. The owners provide an excellent booklet with recommendations for local attractions and restaurants, which we found very helpful. We had no trouble finding street parking in front of the house, although it was February and so competition was likely less than in the summer. Owners were also responsive and helpful.

West End Apt. In Portland ME
Great little place. We walked to a nearby pub for dinner our first night and went back for breakfast the next morning. Beds are super comfy! Water temp. Is super hot, so need to be very careful when using the hot water! When we were going to bed the first night we checked the doors and realized the back door had been unlocked since our arrival. We had gone out not knowing it was unlocked but nothing was missing when we returned. Seems like a safe neighborhood! Would recommend this place!

Nice getaway spot.
The location is wonderful, I enjoyed evening walks with my dog - there was even a small park a few blocks away. It is quiet and safe. Parking was no problem. We were cozy and the unit had everything we needed.

Autumn Portland Vacation
A wonderful time, we loved Portland and surrounding areas. Great information package with local knowledge tips. All the restaurants were great.

Great Experience
This house was perfect for what we needed. Six of us had stayed here and there was plenty of room for all of us. Jason even included and air mattress to help us out if we needed it which was great. The upstairs beds were very comfortable and felt like beds from a 5 star hotel. Jason also checked in with us to make sure we had all we needed and answered all our questions promptly. The location was perfect because it was only a short walk to downtown Portland. Recommend this place for anyone looking for a great value in the area.

The property was fine for our 1night stay. Close to a local pub where we enjoyed a light dinner

5 star rating is for Jason being a amazing host!
Some advice on parking: it seemed as long as you were back home before 6 p.m. you could park within the block. After that, good luck. First night we got in around 9:30. Had to park 2 blocks away. So just a heads up - we ubered when we went out at night because it was too hard to find parking. No "on premise parking".
Our first night was a bit rough. We were in the second bedroom (no actual pic of this room in the listing) and the house itself is very historic, so the floors slope. We felt like we were sleeping downhill. The other bedroom (call it the master) did not have this problem and was spacious! The couch in the LR was also very uncomfortable as the cushions had no "body" to them. One call to Jason the next morning and he was ON TOP OF IT!!
He measured the cushions and went to the store to buy new dense foam and this made all the difference in the world! He also put a board under the head of the bed and it raised it just enough to be able to sleep comfortably. The neighborhood was having internet issues, but he brought a new modem and also gave us instructions on logging into his personal connection. We really appreciated this!!
Jason was an amazing host. We were not "disappointed" in the house and accommodations but from the online pics, we didn't realize how historic the property was and how many steps there were to get upstairs. (guessing about 16?)
This property is clean, but the pics online are nicer than what is currently there. I don't blame the owner, as he has had things stolen, so he has removed a decent amount of the "pretty factors". No K-cups (they get stolen too apparently).
I can assure anyone staying at any of Jason's properties that they are in good hands! It's a shame that people feel the need to steal from VRBO owners or feel like a full rounder of K-cups are theirs to take. It's not a hotel, people. Try to remember that :) Be kind to these owners because they provide a service that is amazing.
Thank you Jason!

Didn't know about this area!
Two sets of couples stayed at this property for 1 night. The home is in a great area and a good size for the 4 of us. Very safe neighborhood and cool places to hang out around the home. Jason was very responsive. I would definitely stay here again.

Great location. Few minutes to downtown restaurants and shops. Easy on/off highway. Small backyard was perfect for our dog. Home was clean and comfortable. Watch your head in the bedrooms.
