About this cottage rental

'Evergreen Anchorage' has had many roles over the last century- a 1920's guest house, a tea room and an antique store. One can walk down the garden path to the sandy beach and snug anchorage, ride bikes to the 'Back Shore', with its granite ledges, berry bushes and through the interior wooded dirt roads and winding paths to ponds, glades & old submarine towers. The day starts on the east side morning sun porch and the late afternoons become evening on the western porch while sitting in rockers and watch the sun set over sailboats, ferries and fishing boats working their way through Diamond Island Passage.

The Evergreen Landing Cottages: This quiet eastern end of the island is dotted with small turn-of-the-century cottages sitting on a hillside above what was , 75 years ago, the third ferry landing for the island. Many years ago the dock was taken out in a storm, leaving a sheltered anchorage with several small pleasure boats and a small crescent beach where families gather and kayakers set off to explore the bay. Just past the beach is the eastern end of Peaks Island, tiny Pumpkin Knob, and Hussey Sound, where boats head off from Portland, Falmouth and the islands for down east destinations. Our cottage is on a road above the landing that has turned from pavement into a well-maintained gravel road ending in a dead end. The only traffic is the neighbors and bicyclists/walkers who took a wrong turn going around the island.

Island Activities: Trefethen Landing is a short stroll back toward the ferry landing, where the TEIA offers guest memberships for play on three clay tennis courts. It offers a large dock and extensive anchorage. There is fishing for striped bass on the rugged back shore or for mackerel down front, at the Casco Bay Lines ferry landing; up the hill from the landing one can rent fishing poles or any additional bikes needed. In this village area are four restaurants, gas pumps, a post office, rental moorings, the grocery store, a lobster pound, several small gift and art shops, the library, police station and health center. Cookouts are popular along the shingle beaches or on the granite ledges that make up much of the back shore facing the open Atlantic. Many artists who live and work on the island offer welcome visits to their studios and offer monthly 'art walks.' Kayak rental is also available, but serious kayakers will want to bring their boats and explore the many nearby islands.

We rented this house to spend time with friends and family, what a great pick! The house is located in a quieter section of the island, with beautiful views of the water from the back porch and decks. The home was comfortable, providing many cozy nooks so you could spend some time on your own. The shared spaces allowed everyone to come together for food, games, or conversations. The kitchen is phenomenal- providing everything you may need- including an ice maker! The outdoor shower is spacious and wonderful. Everyone was impressed by the cleanliness of the house. Each bedroom has it's own name and personality. The kids loved running around on the back porch and yard. I appreciated the prompt and informative communication from the owners- they were lovely and helpful in helping us get the most out of our week on the island. We had a great time and made many memories- we look forward to returning for many years!

Loved the outdoor shower. The home was beautifully decorated and the owner captured the history of this 1908 home with antiques and present day charm. The owner was amazing with ideas and suggestions for our island stay. I would highly recommend staying at Evergreen Anchorage! We miss it already

We had the very best time! The house worked so well for us and our three children. So many lovely evening sunsets and morning coffees in rocking chairs on the porch. Great location and everything we needed was there! Can't wait to go back!

This cottage was a wonderful place to stay! It was beautifully decorated, the view was fantastic, the porches (especially the large one for family games and meals. and enjoying the view while reading or socializing.) were perfect for all ages. This cottage was so well supplied with everything we needed, including lawn games, bicycles, and an abundance of cooking supplies. We all hope to stay here again.

From the moment we arrived we felt completely at home, and in awe of the beautiful, clean decor and comfortable surroundings! There were lovely details and thoughtful amenities in every room. The seaglass window is spectacular! The porch was our favorite gathering place and we enjoyed everything from coffee to cocktails, and sunsets to charades out there, all while enjoying the lovely view of the water! The kitchen was fully stocked with every cooking utensil imagineable, and we enjoyed barbecues and lobster dinners all week! The new outdoor shower was perfect after a long bike ride around the island and a day at the beach. The location is perfect, and the charm of the house is so special. The owners thought of everything to make our stay relaxing and fun-filled. We look forward to coming back as soon as we can! Thank you for sharing this one-of-a-kind family home with us!

This cottage was amazing. Mary Jo was a pleasure to deal with and happily answered all of my questions (and I had a lot) via e-mail, in a timely fashion. When we arrived, my first impression was that this cottage is so much bigger than it looks online (and it looks big online). It was so spacious - there were 4 adults and 3 kids who stayed in this home and we had an entire bedroom and a few beds leftover. Lots of decks - so much time spent on the upstairs deck watching the boats go by in the evenings and listening to the clanging buoys. This home is located in a quiet part of the island away from the ferry dock, which was a big bonus for us. We biked everywhere and nearby beaches are within walking distance. Such fond memories made here in a place where everything was thought of for us. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy. Thank you for such a great week, Mary Jo and family!

Our family of 5 adults, one child and two teens thoroughly enjoyed our recent week at this iconic and historic home. Greeted with floral bouquets, a welcome basket, and every imaginable aspect of true Maine hospitality, each family member immediately sought out a "nook of their own" -and there are plenty! Breakfast in the "morning room", quiet book reads in the "secret porch" downstairs, naps in the upstairs indoor porch, dinners on the front porch, and yes, even meteor showers on the top deck while sipping wine, were all part of the daily routine. When cousins came over to visit one evening, the ample living room found us all playing Charades, then Trivia, and as the youngsters tired and took to their rooms with laptops, the adults had spirited discussions about how to solve world issues. A kitchen/pantry made with "foodies" in mind, every need anticipated, every convenience, every minute detail already planned for, made our stay by far the most pleasurable of any in our half dozen years of leasing on Peak's. The decorating here is a labor of love: straight from a Victoria or Country Living magazine, only more practical, more personal. With bikes provided, we all got a daily dose of exercise while walking and biking to the nearby beaches and events held on the island. A truly idyllic vacation we hope to repeat in years to come!
