Beautiful house from the mid-1930’s filled with wonderful artifacts and Hawaiiana. Nice kitchen area for in home cooking - pots pans rice cooker etc- Comfynooks for relaxing- great wrap around deck with lounge chairs and a dining table! The garden is lush and creative. There are many cocqui frogs at night so if that bothers you, there is even ears plugs! Our only negative was that due to a plumbing issue my husband could not soak in the tub (for his degenerative disk) altho the shower worked fine.

Would definitely stay again! The house is so unique and we loved the decor. Wish we had more time to just stay and enjoy the space. Close to ocean, shopping, food. Thanks again for sharing your home! We had a great stay.

We stayed in Hilo during the third week of sept. The property was everything we had hoped for. When we pulled in there was a parking space right next to the entry so getting settled was a matter of minutes. Every room is full of interesting surprises. The space is large and gives you plenty of indoor and outdoor living. We absolutely loved the garden area and spent much of our time out on the deck next to it. This space is secluded and gives the feeling of being in a little private rain forest. Our stay was partly sunny with rain coming mostly in the evenings or during the night. This created a cozy sleeping environment with the sound of the geckos and soft rain. The bed is soft and the bathroom is close by.
We enjoyed each room. There were litteraly hundreds of little pieces of Hawian history. Some spaces had the feel of a well desiged small museum. Our host Kawehi, was gracious and supplied us with unexpected pastries, and breakfast munchies. It was a pleasure to meet and talk with her.
We want our vacations to feel like unique destinations. This one gets 5 out of 5! We can’t wait to return.

Hilo was our base for 6 days on the Big Island. Excellent amenities and location. Highly recommend.

This is an absolutely lovely home with lots of space and attention to detail! We found it charming from the moment we walked in, and it’s very well supplied; even rather surprising, considering that it’s right near downtown. (We didn’t get a chance to meet our hostess, but we got the impression that it’s her family home.) We really enjoyed all of the decor (many truly fascinating things abound), along with the quaint way the guest yard is fashioned, as well as the various comfortable seating areas on the big lanai. This is an excellent choice for any discerning traveler and, if we ever need a spot in Hilo, we’d love to stay here again.

The pictures do not accurately show how interesting this place is. the magical feel of being in this space. Especially when you enter in the evening. The little quarter sized frogs sing amongst themselves at night. I thought i was transported in a magical fairy-tale. The vintage and curated peices are such a pleasure to look at and i can just imagine the stories that are behind them. The owner must have alot to share about the items, such as the golfing sign. I bet theres a story there. All needed supplies available in this space. I enjoyed having everything at my fingertips even if i don't use it. The openness and generosity if the owner is evident. Thank you again. My friends that live in the island will recommend their friends to stay here next time. I walked to the main area of The city each day, about 10 minutes or so. I could go on and on. I will be back to Hilo to see my dearest of friends. Best, Leigh

The stories behind the items carefully curated in this lovely home could, I’m sure, fill a couple volumes of travel books. Inside and out, this place is welcoming and homey. The host is friendly and responsive. A great place to stay.

All are wonderful. The property will be more better if it’s AC is new machine . Old machine noise is too big to sleep.

All the privacy you could want. A sprawling house with a lovely garden. Memorable indoor and outdoor spaces and a lovely kitchen. True professional hosts who left us welcome fruit, had everything stocked and a useful list of sites. A true oasis in a good neighborhood with a covered parking space to boot! Could not have asked for more with this listing. Would 100% recommend

The home make you instantly feel part of Hilo. Very clean with comfortable bed. We really appreciated all the conveniences provided that made our stay very enjoyable. A special treat was listening to the music of a Hawaiian artist promoted on the refrigerator with a glass of wine in the fabulous sitting room.

Private Oasis
Fell in love as soon as we arrived. Kawehi is a great host. Ate breakfast each morning outside surrounded by beautiful landscaping. Didn't feel guilty about taking down time as even when you are inside, you still feel like you are outdoors. We would definitely stay here again.

Greatplace
We were surprised by how big the place was. Two big porches for eating and relaxing and ahuge living room with seperate tv room. The ac in the bedroom was most welcome. Pastries and mango upon arrival, easy in and out, convenient to be downtown and the sights. Could not havebeen better. No view but a beautiful garden was a great substitute.

Aloha time in Hilo.
Wonderful stay. Charming Hawaiian/British decorated place, great host, accurate instructions. Rare opportunity to see active volcano, which was conveniently close at the national park which is great when driving at night (best time to see volcano activity).

We had a great time in Hilo, made better by Kawali’s nice space. We loved all of the outdoor space that flowed into the indoor space!

Wow, what a great space!
This was such a cool place to stay. It was like staying in a cool tiki museum/library/thrift store. Every day I would find some fun little item that I hadn't seen before. There are at least 7 lovely spaces to sit and relax. Read, play games, help prep in the kitchen, watch TV. The Hostess supplied so much extra, bug spray, sunscreen, yummy papaya, fresh croissants, cold pop and water. Location is great. Short walk to downtown, or really short drive. We loved our stay!

Hawaiian Paradise
This beautiful property is located in Hilo within walking distance of the downtown. The garden areas and porch were absolutely beautiful. The house reminded me of traditional old New England style houses, With all the modern conveniences. It was wonderful having the property manager who is a native Hawaiian give us advice on where to eat and go on the island. All of her advice was spot on. She made herself available for any questions or recommendations. The property was clean and well-kept.

Cozy and cute
This cottage style home is both comfortable and charming. We were surprised how spacious it is, with both sitting and dining areas inside and out. Lots of tropical plants and garden like setting it was beautiful.
The owner Kawehi is a warm friendly soul who made us feel like family. Her rental reflects her charm and Hawaiian heritage. It says Aloha, you are welcomed here. She even had some fresh baked goods waiting for us and complimentary water and other beverages. Way beyond what we expected.
We enjoy cooking and found the kitchen to have all the necessary items to cook delicious meals. We also found the bed to be very comfortable and the bathroom well supplied with toiletries.
The only thing that was somewhat challenging was the Tree Frogs at night can be quite loud. Kawehi even provided a jar full of ear plugs you can use and dispose of afterwards. We just closed the windows in the bedroom at night which significantly reduced the sound.
The location of this cottage is very convenient to everything in the Hilo area. We would definitely stay here again should we return to Hilo

The place is beautiful and true to photos. Smelly sheets though.
The place is well decorated and stocked. The wind chimes are nice to listen to. The host is very nice and provided some complimentary fruit and baked goods.
Note that the frogs/bugs/birds outside are loud at night, but foam earplugs are provided. My only complaint is that the bed sheets might not be clean, as something smelled funny (maybe just damp) and I also found a bandage in between the sheets. I hope this is a one-off case, because I wasn't able to sleep well from the smell. Everything else was perfect.

Hilo stay
We couldn't have had a better host for our visit to Hilo. She was welcoming and generous with her home and advice. She had papaya and cake waiting for us and she even gave us the recipe for the cake. The house was eclectic and it was just what we wanted. It was a great stay and would certainly go back.

The house was authentic Hawaiian. It was convenient to downtown Hilo. It was cluttered! The towels were big, soft, generous. There were lots of towels!

Comfortable and relaxing
Lovingly, comprehensively furnished yet surprisingly spacious, with several indoor and outdoor seating areas. The lush garden filled with tropical plants and birdsong provides a buffer from the street (not highly traveled). Note: .9 mile to downtown/restaurants, a pleasant evening walk. Better located than the hotel area for restaurants and shops.

A Wonderful Place to Stay
We had a wonderful time here. It was almost like staying in a museum. Kawehi has so many artifacts and so much look over. A real treasure house of items. The accommodations were also very good. Very comfortable quarters with many places to sit and watch the birds, or read, or whatever. Would definitely stay here again if we came back to Hilo.

Gem in the heart of Hilo
This was a fabulous place to relax after a long day in Kalapana. It was a very short drive to the waterfront restaurants in Hilo ( we would have walked if not for the rain :) and would stay again. The history and culture in the settings was very comfortable to stay in.

We were delighted to see the property just as described in the ad
This was our 5th visit to the Big Island and we wanted to spend some time exploring Hilo. Hale Kawehi was perfect for us. We were wowed by the ad in VRBO and, on arrival, found the place delightful. It is located on a relatively quiet street and in walking distance of downtown restaurants and shopping. The kitchen is supplied with about everything we needed and we felt quite at home and enjoyed our meals we prepared there. Hilo is conveniently located for visits to Hawaii Volcanoes NP, Akaka Falls and up the North Hilo and Hamakua coast, and was a cozy place to return to in the evening. We only had a brief conversation with Kawehi, and found her to be a very cordial host. We will probably stay there again in the future, if it is available. Our stay there was an important component of a very enjoyable vacation.

Another great visit
Another terrific visit to Kawehi's place in Hilo. This is our fifth time, so obviously we love her house. Kawehi is a wonderful host. Her place is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped, and most importantly, very different from the standard condo units that make up most of Hawaii's rental possibilities.

Wonderful stay!
We stayed for a week and had a lovely time at the Guesthouse. The bed was very comfortable and it was so nice to have AC in the bedroom at night. The patio is large and covered which made it so pleasant to sit out in the lovely garden while it is raining. We enjoyed the fresh fruit and croissants that Kawehi thoughtfully provided! The neighborhood is quiet and close to downtown. We look forward to returning again soon. Thank you Kawehi for being such a great Hostess!
