About this house rental
Relax, recover and unwind at Writers' Refuge, a beautiful secluded and modern mountain chalet. This is a spectacular opportunity to enjoy all that Deep Creek Lake has to offer.
Whether skiing in the winter, boating in the summer or admiring the changing colors in Autumn, Writers' Refuge at Deep Creek Lake has something for the whole family to enjoy. High-speed Internet access is included and provides an excellent opportunity to take an extended vacation and catch up on work, if necessary. (desk and computer monitor included in downstairs bedroom) Well behaved pets are always welcome. Our beloved yellow lab spent 14 years hiking with us around DCL--we cherish the memories and understand that four-legged family members are just as important as the rest of our family members. We now have two new labs, Ama and Lucky, that have joined our family and are loving the wonderful hiking trails in the area.
This beautiful three-story chalet has 4 bedrooms: Bedroom 1 on the main floor (queen) with sliding glass doors to the back deck and connected door to main bath; Bedroom 2 on top floor (queen); Bedroom 3 on top floor (full); Bedroom 4 on lower level (2 twins and 1 single trundle/total for twins) with sliding glass door to backyard; Two bathrooms--one on main floor and one on top floor. The upstairs bathroom has a tub, the main floor bathroom has shower and tub.
The house is located 2 miles from Deep Creek Lake and 1.5 miles from the WISP Ski Resort entrance. It is fully furnished inside and out with lots of quilts and very cozy furnishings. We now include linens and quilts with each bed and include a set of towels for each guest.
Enjoy the view overlooking the woods from the deck, relax in front of the wood-burning stove or gaze at the stars from the outdoor hot tub. Grill out and relax on the large back deck overlooking the woods. The chalet is just minutes away from beautiful state parks, including: Deep Creek Lake Park, Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor.
Guests of Writers' Refuge have complimentary access to Deep Creek Fitness...enjoy your workout!
High-speed WIFI access is included. We recently over-stocked the kitchen with new pottery dishes, pots/pans, glass and barware. We upgraded the appliances a couple of years ago with all stainless steel appliances, new gas stove added in 2020 and we upgraded the washer/dryer with stainless steel as well.
In the summer we have a window Air Conditioning unit on the main floor and we've added circulating fans in each of the bedrooms. And we recently completed a refresh of the house: new paint in each room, new light fixtures throughout and a kitchen refresh as well as an extended driveway/pad area and upgraded walkway/decking in the front of the house.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome with a $125 pet fee, per visit.

Long weekend stay to enjoy mountains and lake activities. Beautiful rustic mountain home with plenty of space and privacy. Patty made trip and check-in process very easy. She provided great tips for activities nearby as well!

We had a very enjoyable stay. The house is in a great location; very close to everything you could wish to visit in the area. Road traffic noise was very slight and not at all disturbing. The place exudes charm with its' shabby chic decor and beautiful exposed beam ceilings. The kitchen is exceptional with all you need to create full course meals. My son was making a spaghetti dinner one day and had to exclaim when he even found a garlic press! The drive in takes a little getting used to. It is a mountainous area, after all, and the entry is a little steep. You get used to it quickly, though, and there is generous parking for three vehicles. When my daughter and I first arrived, it was close to dusk, and we did see a bear trying to break into the trash bins. I recommend disposing of the trash mid-day!
There are a few minor items that could be addressed related to limited mobility on my part. These mainly concern the entrance, the bathtub and the hot tub. Overall, a wonderful experience and I highly recommend this lovely get-a-way!

The house was lovely, quiet and secluded, but conveniently near to many wonderful hiking trails, the Deep Creek Lake park with beach and swimming, and, of course, mini golf and the best pizza in western Maryland!
We greatly enjoyed the hot tub, as well as the cozy downstairs den for watching movies. The house was large enough so that we could stay out of each others' way when needed!
A happy spot!

Spent the weekend with my 5 bridesmaids, mom, and future mother in law, loved the hot tub! Ate at the Green Turtle, got donuts at Dazed and Confused and coffee at Canoe on the Run, took a trip to view the waterfalls, and enjoyed the scenery and privacy!

The cabin was very clean and well equiped with everything we needed to enjoy a long weekend with the family. Wr did have a shortage in paper towels but, Patty came to the rescue and Zelled us money to buy what we needed to make it right. Really enjoyed the hot tub and the deck to relax and just enjoy our time together.

We really linke the cabin. Very confortable and very well equipped.
We had a wonderful time!

We had a great time at this perfect cabin! Good number of bedrooms and space to hang out. Hot tub was great to relax in after a day at Wisp! Very close to everything Deep Creek has to offer. The snow was definitely a bonus and made this property even more beautiful!

This was our second time staying here and loved it yet again! Highly recommend for couples and smaller groups :-)

We rented this cabin to stay with family to get one last dose of summer before we got back into the swing of the school year. This cabin fit us perfectly and had adequate room to spread out. It was clean and quiet, and had everything we needed.
It sits a short drive from all the fun DCL has to offer, either at Wisp or on the lake.
We would definitely recommend this property if you’re looking for a place to stay in this area.

House was overall perfect for my family of 10. We enjoyed the deck space and the hot tub. Only complaint was the amount of dead bugs and massive flies in the basement. The house was clean but could use a deep clean to get rid of dead bugs in light fixtures. Basement window was broken which allowed massive flies into the down stairs rooms. However overall we had a great stay and enjoyed the house immensely.

We enjoyed!

House was great! The communication with the property owners was awesome. They answered all of our questions promptly. We really enjoyed our weekend stay.

The place was very comfortable, clean, and exactly as described.

Our stay was exactly what we hoped for. It is a nice little house away from the busy areas of Deep Creek.

Property was clean, quiet, and all around a great place. A great place for a weekend stay with lot to do nearby.

Wonderful location secluded on the trees. Multiple beds to accommodate guests. The communication was the best we’ve experienced, and it had all of the necessary amenities which we appreciated immensely. And the porch was beautiful! Thank you, Patty and Lane, for an amazing weekend!

I was very pleased with the lodging of how it was fully equipped with all of our need’s getting ready to get going thank you for your hospitality and late check out thank you again look you up next time

Location, location, location! This unit has not only location, but also great communication at a very reasonable price. We were thankful to stay here for the weekend.

Was a great experience and the host was fantastic. The downside was the hot tub did not work all weekend (which the host refunded a night due to) and the lights in the house had dead bugs inside the glass casing around the light. Overall 4/5 stay and would recommend (especially since these issues are easy to fix)

It was easy to check in and checkout. No problems and the place was clean. Thanks for the good experience.

We really enjoyed our stay at this property. The owners of the property were great and allowed us to check in early. Plus there was a bottle of wine and box of cookies when we arrived. It was very welcoming. It was also very close to Wisp which was super convenient. The house itself needs a little updating and minor repairs and it wasn't super clean...potato chips under ottoman in basement. Other then that we had a great weekend and thought it was a cute house.

Good location and very nice woodsy cabin like home. Lots of space. Well maintained inside.

Just finished up our NYE trip to Deep Creek—4 adults & 6 kids. The location & proximity to Wisp & Skiing was just great for us. Patty’s communication was probably the best I’ve ever experienced on VRBO, I’m not even kidding. She was super quick and thorough with her messaging, and her place is just a hidden gem!

Wonderful location and beautifully decorated. Family was a big fan of the hot tub and proximity to Wisp!

Rented the home for family's Christmas holiday vacation. The house is cozy and located in the beautiful mountains of Deep Creek Lake. Very responsive and friendly owners, and was perfect for our dogs too! Located a very short drive to Wisp, groceries and other stores on the main street. Located on a steep hill which makes AWD/4WD very helpful, especially when ice or snow. Great holiday vacation!

We were a bit worried about size for a family get together/dinner but the downstairs tv/game zone was perfect. There was planty of room.
This is also the first rental that had pots and pans for larger families. Loved this stay.

My husband and I stayed here for a week for our vacation and his birthday. We absolutely loved the house and the location was perfect. Close to the parks for hiking, far enough away from town that we were nice and secluded, but close enough that we could run over to one of the coffee shops or restaurants very easily. Would definitely recommend!

We absolutely loved our stay! The full deck on the back was enjoyed by all! It gave the feeling of being in a tree house ☺️ loved the sliding glass doors that let in so much light! We bright along our dogs and they absolutely loved the freedom of running around outside. We were able to arrive earlier than expected and check out later. It made it nice so that we didn’t feel rushed to clean and pack up. The views are spectacular. Plenty of rooms for family to spread out and sleep. Can’t wait to plan another visit! Thank you for sharing your home with us!

My friends and I came to this place and instantly enjoyed it, it’s exactly how it it looks in the picture and everything is set up for you and accommodate for you to have a great stay. The location is only 5 min drive from anywhere you need to be food or fun. My friends and I had a great time and it was a wonderful way to spend Labor Day weekend, and my birthday. My friends were actively around talking about coming back to spend a winter weekend here as well!
My only warning is use Waze instead of Apple Maps because Apple Maps took us to a place 7 mins away with no house located, the host does do a great job though telling where the house is located and everything you need to know for your stay.
4.8
Everything was perfect! Very easy to communicate with Patty. Close to many of the attractions. The cabin was very cute and had everything you could need. Would stay again!

The house felt like home. The big lower level was perfect for game night and chilly! The kitchen had everything we needed to help us cook meals! Just perfect!

Woodland Hideaway
This cozy house was tucked into the woods—very quiet and private, but it was less than 5 minutes from town! The best of both worlds. There were 7 of us staying at the house for a family reunion on Deep Creek Lake. The Writer’s Refuge was a perfect place to return to after busy days on the lake. We used the kitchen for breakfast and to pack lunches. It had everything we needed to cook, even spices.
The bedrooms, were warm, but we kept a fan in front of the living room air conditioner to circulate the air. All rooms had small fans. We loved the high beamed ceilings in the bedrooms. The downstairs was a great place to gather and watch tv.
We loved our stay.

Not lost in the woods
This house sits just off a through road around Deep Creek Lake but feels much more isolated. It sits below the road with a large deck facing into the woods behind. It appears small but has enough separate spaces for individual retreating as well as several areas to gather as a group.
The hot tub would be easier to enter and leave with a handrail but has ample steps and a wide ledge to sit on for getting in or out. The controls took some experimenting to operate. Instructions would have been helpful. But it was wonderful once in the water, even in a light rain.
We did not use the kitchen other than the refrigerator and Keurig coffee maker. It appeared well equipped and stocked with utensils and dinnerware.
The bathtubs did not have grab bars. I had some temporary disability and would have felt safer with a grab bar. Older or mobility challenged visitors could have a problem getting in and out of the tub.
The location is as advertised, close to Wisp and shopping and also close to some state parks.
We did not use the TV or other electronics. The TVs have Roku devices but the basement one was not connected to WiFi. The WiFi had good speed for our devices.
Our little dog had a good time exploring all three floors.

Very relaxing, comfortable hideaway
Wonderful property was everything we were hoping for. The location was great – very near to all the conveniences of town, but yet feeling very isolated and private. Communication was excellent.

Reasonably priced and good location
We liked the property. It is in the middle of the woods so there were lots of insects and spiders. The owners were very responsive and addressed the few issues we encountered promptly, and even compensated our total cost for the inconvenience we had. We loved Deep Creek and had a nice, memorable vacation.

We loved visiting the green area around Derp Creek Lake and taking the grandchildren to local activities!

We loved our stay at this cabin. Plenty of space for our family of 4. Very secluded yet just a 5-10 minute drive to restaurants, shopping and some hiking. The quiet calm was just what we needed and the hot tub was great. I loved the sound of the stream/small waterfall behind the cabin. So relaxing. The upstairs beds were very comfortable and we had no issues with the Wi-Fi. For it being a pet frendly home ther was no smell of dog. We brought out lab along and he
