History hangs heavy in the air as Lake Vermilion was at the heart of the great logging campaign of the 1800’s that built America’s great cities as our country 🇺🇸 expanded Westward. Minnesota’s 1st Iron Mine was located on the Vermilion Iron Range and is now a State Park and Scientific Research Facility. Native Americans have occupied the Lake Vermilion area for the past 5,000 - 7,000 years and traces of their presence can be seen all around, by those with a keen eye.

My middle son wanted his "senior" trip to be with his whole family (dog too) and focused on fishing. This was the perfect rental for exactly that. Shaun was great with all of our questions. The cabin was perfect-- we have 3 boys (20, 17, 14) myself, my husband, and dog, and we didn't feel crowded. The boys enjoyed all the family pictures and history of the island. We spent most of our time outside-- and ate our meals in the screened-in gazebo. The boys spent most of their time fishing-- both on the dock & in the boat. They caught a trophy walleye off the dock and the biggest fish (northern) off the dock. My middle son ended up catching 50 fish during our week's stay. Our dog enjoyed roaming the island and we found a little area where he could swim. We enjoyed the kayak and spent some time in the hammocks relaxing. We were expecting the mosquitos to be awful-- but they weren't. It was a great way to get a "wilderness" feel (felt very much like Boundary Waters in the bay) with modern-day amenities. I'm sure my boys will ask to go back next summer!

We had a great week on Lake Vermilion. It’s a beautiful, peaceful spot with everything you need. We enjoyed fishing, swimming, hiking at the shore lunch, and watching bald eagles at the opening of Black Bay. Highly recommend for a great spot to spend time with family.

It was a perfect place to get far away from everyday. We needed a break from everything that distracts us as a couple from the being our best. It was nice to reconnect, to remind ourselves of what is truly important and the things that really matter in life. We found that in our very short week. The serenity, quiet (but for the loons), and beauty that exists “ up north” is rarely found today. We found that here, and… we caught a few fish as a bonus! It’s not 5 star luxury but that’s not what this place is about, it’s much more rewarding than that.:
Thanks for sharing your place with us Shawn,

It was exactly how the owner described the island. We had a couple of days of bad weather, but otherwise it was a good week.
Thanks

Had a great time. The cabin was as discribed. Communication with owner was great! Will be back again hopefully.

We had a fabulous time….
Swimming off dock, fishing, star gazing, hammock swinging, books, and a couple fires.
Kids caught loads of fish…first walleye!
Cabin has super comfortable beds, clean linens. Washer/dryer a plus but used hanging lines more for our clothes.
You are on an island and it slows everyone down. Need to be okay with no dishwasher, composting toilet, etc.
Missing it!
Thank you, Shaun.

Great Minnesota cabin experience. Girls enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, and catching fish from the dock. Watching movies in the evening. Secluded yet close enough to day trip adventures withthe family. Everything you need in one place.

It was a nice place to stay. Loved the privacy on the island. It was nice having the washer and dryer. Everything we needed. The only issue was it seemed like we could launch our boat at their dock, but that wasn’t the case. Now we know for next time. Overall, great experience!

Great week. Had some rain but still had a lot of fun swimming, boating, fishing and sitting around the fire.

Shaun's property is exactly as described.
It is a very nice, private and peaceful location. Very remote.
If you are looking for a remote experience, with complete privacy this is it.
The cabin and property are well maintained and completely furnished and stocked with everything you need.
Shaun's fishing tips are spot on, the man knows how to fish.
I would not hesitate to recommend the property.

Overall we had a great time. How can you beat a cottage on a private island with two docks? We had 8 adults that slept inside, and it was comfortable. Fishing was great! Cleanliness of cabin depends on who was there before you. We made sure to leave it better then what we found it. The outside bathroom was nice, for some taking care of the composite toilet might seem like much, but it was no big deal for us. Laundry was nice, machines worked great. Large outside refrigerator. Some things to help out the next guests: If you have a boat, get with Shaun ahead of time to get details of where to launch (it is next to his dock and boat on mainland, but different road). He will also tell you where to park your vehicle and boat afterwards. As mentioned before, you are responsible for cleaning the cabin and grounds after your stay, so give yourself time to do so. We brought our own supplies, but many were on site (including garbage bags). You must take all garbage with you when you leave. We used the fish cleaning station a lot. No running water was present, no big deal, but it would be nice if a drain hose was added to sink so when cleaning off station it did not "splatter" everywhere on deck. We made sure to scrub the table and deck after each use. A kayak was available which was very nice, some good fishing right around the island! Overall had a fantastic stay! Thank you for sharing your island oasis with us!

Great place to stay! The views were fantastic the remoteness on the lake was exactly what we were looking for. Fish was good too. Catch fish all around the island Don’t even have to leave. What a wonderful remote getaway!!

We enjoyed a nice relaxing week at a great A-frame cabin on an island all our own. The property and location was perfect for what we were looking for and hope to get back there sometime. Has everything you would ever need, the hammocks and R&R was wonderful!

Black Bay is the perfect protected bay for launching and docking at the island, and it so quiet and wonderful. Just a short ride to amazing fishing. Not many houses or resorts in the area, which adds to the serenity. The island location was a dream...a fun little plot to explore and sit down at one of the many benches overlooking the lake.
The hammocks were so relaxing. Blueberries and unique mushrooms all over the island. Mosquitos were much better than anticipated. I assume the island gets a bit more wind blown to keep the bugs to a minimum. Fantastic lighting all over the property and dock. Dock area was ideal, with fishing rod holders and life jacket storage, extension cord ready to charge the trolling motor. I didn't even realize there was a main bedroom with its own tv and walk out onto the porch by the fire pit. Kids had a blast sleeping in the loft area, with tons of books for reading. We loved the family atmosphere of all the pictures posted up all over the walls. It was a true home away from home with everything we needed and more. Shaun was super quick to respond to questions and seems like a real gem. If we get the opportunity to return, we wouldn't hestitate to do it again.

Walleye Island
Shaun is an awesome host. Third summer trip in last three years and plan to come again next year. Enough walleye to feed the family for days! Imagine an entire island all for yourself with everything you would normally have at home. Comfortably slept family of five. Bathroom, water, and boat ride to island are all no problems and should not stop you from booking. This vacation rental is unlike any other we have ever stayed at and we keep coming back and it gets better every time. Thanks Shaun and see you next year and the new dock was great for swimming and parking the boat.

Beautiful week on the island
My extended family and I had a wonderful time on the island. The cabin was clean, well stocked and the property was well cared for and in a beautiful location on the lake. Shaun was a great host and very responsive and proactive. We’ll definitely be back!

perfect island getaway
Me and 6 other 60-70 y/o guys stayed and loved the island. A frame is small but as advertised. It has everything you could reasonably need. if you usually stay at hibrow places you might be a little unhappy but this is a great isolated place to enjoy a week. I would not recommend july -august as best fishing months but that is true no matter where you go. Shaun the owner was helpful and I would recommend his island highly.

Peaceful get away
A very special place! We had a relaxing week and enjoyed the remote location and the tranquility. Fishing was a bit challenging but my boys who are used to river fishing had some success- bass, perch, bluegill, pike. Comfortable beds, fabulous hammocks, cozy comfortable cabin and fabulous outdoor spaces for family bonding time. Composting toilet was a new one for us, but there was little smell (we quickly learned to avoid showering or using it immediately after maintenance routine...) We would definitely return but would try earlier in summer or late spring to see if fishing more lucrative.

Annual June fishing trip
This place was nice. The fishing was not very good but you can't control that. The owner was very helpful with places to fish and walked me throughout the cabin showing me what thinks need to be done.
The only thing that was challenging was space with 7 guys. Seating area is small. If you had a family with kids you would have plenty of sleeping and space.
The view was great and it was a nice and quiet week.
Thanks Shaun

Island Life and Walleye
This was our second year we booked the island and plan to come back again.
Shaun is great and he did everything he could to put us on the fish.
We caught enough walleyes for a couple of meals and more Northern, blue gills, and crappie than I could keep track of.
Kids had a great time fishing and swimming right off the dock.
Tons of space for 5 people and more. Kitchen had everything. Toilet, garbage, and water are no problem. Easily take care of all things needed in Cook just a short drive from the island.
Used the boat and it worked great for fishing. Easily gets your stuff from car to the island.
This is a true paradise if you enjoy fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, all while doing so on your very own private island.
It is obvious that Shaun has thought about every detail down to the lights that come on at dark to guide your boat in after a night of fishing. The screen doors that shut perfectly and keep out all the bugs. The tin roof over the new gazebo that sounds incredible in the rain.
Thanks for sharing this one of a kind property with us Shaun. If you are unsure. .trust me you won't be disappointed!

Cabin Living
The cabin was very nice and the view doesn’t get any better than that. A lot of great upgrades have been done to the property including the composting toilet, internet service, the live wells on the dock and the washer/dryer. You feel like you are in the wilderness but still have the amenities of home. Shaun was great and answered all of our questions in a timely manner. We would definitely recommend this vacation spot.

Wonderful island
A beautiful island on a beautiful lake. We really enjoyed our time and our dog (who lives most of her life on leash) had the time of her life. The owner was quick and helpful in responding to questions.

Great way to get out of the city!
The cabin and island were fantastic! Everything was very clean and very well laid out. The pre-strung hammocks were a great way to spend the afternoon reading a book with an excellent view out to the water. The area around the public boat landing directly south of the cabin was gorgeous! We boated all around Black Bay and into the main Lake Vermilion waters and saw plenty of wildlife. We took one day trip to hike the various trails nearby and another day trip to visit 100+ black bears at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary. Shaun was an awesome host and always there when we had questions. We highly recommend his cabin and island to anyone looking for a secluded getaway.

Wonderful lake vacation
We had a wonderful week. The cabin was cozy and well stocked with comfortable beds. We rented the boat as well and it was clean and seemed to be well maintained. The kids enjoyed swimming and fishing off of the dock and caught a ton of smaller fish as well as a 24" Northern pike. The campfire area is perfect with a beautiful view of the lake and the hammocks are great for relaxing.
We mostly boated or stayed on the island but also enjoyed a couple of visits to Moosbirds for ice cream, picking up dinner at the Landing, and swimming at the beach at the Wakemup Bay campground.
Shaun was amazing with communication and quickly answered any questions that I thought of as we were preparing for our trip. It is obvious that it is a special place to Shaun and his family.
There are a couple of things that should be noted: 1. There is a small piece of land attached to the island by a thin strip of land that is not a part of the cabin rental. During the second half of our stay there was a loud larger group staying there. Because of the water and their proximity to the cabin we could hear everything including the fireworks they shot off at 11pm. Overall it wasn't a huge deal but it did make sitting around the campfire in the evening much less peaceful. I was expecting the island to feel a bit more remote but we were there during a prime week in July and I'm sure the feel is completely different for most of the year. I wasn't familiar with Lake Vermilion before this trip and didn't realize what a popular destination it is.
2. Black Bay is called that for a reason! The water in the bay is very brown from tannin. If you are set on a crystal clear lake this is not the lake for you! The water seems very clean, it's just dark. It made my oldest daughter nervous to swim initially but she quickly got over it.
3. As Shaun mentions in the listing, there is no housekeeping on the island so you will need to clean the cabin and wash the sheets and towels before you go. We didn't mind this at all but it did take quite a while to get all of the laundry done, etc while trying to pack and load our own stuff plus wrangle our children at the same time. A slightly later checkout time might be helpful in order to get everything done well. Even with an early start we were actually late checking out but Shaun was very gracious about it.
We would highly recommend this listing and would definitely stay here if we come to the area again.

“They wanted to stay in a CABIN and what’s better than a cabin on an ISLAND!?!”
This spring when we were deciding on a family summer vacation the boys (9 yrs. and 11 yrs.) said that they have never stayed in a cabin. Don’t get me wrong, they have traveled all over and stayed in everything from coastal VRBO’s, all inclusive Caribbean vacations, and even a two week motor home trip half way across the US and Canada, but they wanted to stay in a CABIN and what’s better than a cabin on an ISLAND!?! The Island did not disappoint! It was charming. It was rustic. It was peaceful. It was everything we expected and more. It was probably the most relaxing vacation we have been on.
ONE WHOLE WEEK, of being unplugged from this world, work, and technology and plugged into FAMILY, fun, and fishing!! We enjoyed time with each other. We enjoyed nature. We enjoyed peaceful evenings with the sound of boys chatting as they fished on the dock, trips to Moosebirds for ice cream, tubing all over the lake, exploring different bays of Lake Vermilion, and of course; fishing the channel, the triangle, and several bays! This past week was one of the most relaxing summer vacations we have ever had. The boys were making fond memories together and we were soaking in every moment 💕.
Shaun, the owner, was very helpful and wanted our experience at The Island to be wonderful. He gave the boys two Rapala lures and provided fishing advice. Shaun even gave us the location of the best fishing spot, but if you want to know where it is you’ll have to get it from him (it’s a secret 😉).
Overall, the cabin was charming and a great place to play “eye spy” and “hide the thimble (or any small object)” on a rainy day. The buildings are rustic and you shouldn’t be surprised to see a spider or two around (which the boys thought were super cool). The Island is left mostly natural; making for a peaceful vacation with space for the kids to explore and enjoy nature.
Thanks again, Shaun, for sharing The Island through VRBO. It was a wonderful experience for my family!
Crackling fire, waves lapping, lighted pathways, beautiful sunsets, and more!!

What a week of memories made!
What a week of memories made! Our family had such a wonderful time exploring, fishing and enjoying all of the beauty around the island. It is breathtaking! Do yourself a favor and check out the stars after dark. The kids caught plenty of fish right off the dock when we were not out on the lake. The cabin and island are well-stocked with everything you need. Shaun was very helpful with our questions. It was hard to leave!

Amazing private island is for real!
This is a private island with all the amenities of home. Stove and oven worked great! Kids caught tons of fish off the dock. Live well on the dock was great for keeping minnows and other caught fish. We rented the boat and Shaun gave great advice on ways to fish. We didn't catch the big one, but had a few that got away, maybe you will catch them. The boat was great for fishing. Would highly recomend this private getaway to anyone who is looking for a great fishing adventure. Toilet was no problem. House was clean when we got there. Zups grocery store in Cook had water and great local frozen pizza would recomend chicken alfredo! Dump was super easy to just outside of Cook. They didn't even charge for two bags of garbage dropped off. Thanks for all your help Shuan! Cant wait to come back!

island get-a-way
Great place to get away from it all. The fridge outside was a little strange but really there would no other place for it. I was a little concerned about the outdoor bathroom, which really is a building all of it's own and very nice. So ladies, no need to worry there, it is not an outhouse. We rented the boat and it was pretty perfect for the two of us, although a seat with a back would of been nice. We caught tons of little fish off the dock, kids would love that. Very nice, I would highly recommend.

Perfect Island getaway
From the back road trip to the private boat launch, to the short water ride to the dock. You know you are going to have an adventure.
The cabin was clean and comfortable with everything thought out to the last detail.
All u need to do is sit back and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Perfect north woods cabin experience!
My wife and I took the kids (15/12/10) and the dog up to stay at Shaun's family cabin on Lake Vermilion. It was great! I think of it as like going to the boundary waters, but without having to sleep on rocks, in a tent, while mosquitos pump itch juice into you. The cabin is kind of perfect, to be honest. The kids all slept upstairs in the loft (of course). We grilled out with the new (gas) grill most nights, but the kitchen inside is perfectly adequate, too.
Everyone fought over the hammocks (is there any better nap than curled up with a book, in a hammock, with a cool breeze, next to a lake?). We did a fair amount of fishing, both from the dock (mostly bass, perch, sunnies) and out on the boat. The cleaning station on the dock is brilliant, and there are 2 live wells built into the dock. Actually, the whole thing is really well thought out. At night, there are little solar powered lights that turn on automatically and light the paths up to the house.
We all had a great time, would stay again if we had the chance.
Practical things:
- We did get cell phone signals (with T-Mobile no less) in the spot near the hammocks.
- The boat ride to the landing/parking area is about 5 minutes.
- Shaun recommended the Walmart in Virginia to get refills of the 5 gallon water bottles, but we found a place in Cook (30 mins nearer) that has the 5 gallon bottles (different company, but now the bottles are there now, so it's only I think $6.25 per as long as you bring the bottles back with you).
- Take the boat, or drive, to Moosebirds (on the way to the cabin) and get some Ice cream.

True Northwoods Getaway
This is a beautiful property that has everything a person needs yet still retains the feeling of being off grid in a wilderness setting. Shaun, the owner was very receptive to any questions we had prior to and during our stay. He went out of his way ensuring our stay was memorable. We truly felt the pride he had in allowing others to experience all that his property and the surrounding area offered. I highly recommend this property to hardcore fishermen and families alike. Truly a north woods gem.
