We enjoyed our stay at this quirky apartment. It is in a great location by a canal, about 15 minutes walk from the station. The building dates from 1750, and has very narrow and steep stairs (like many old buildings in the Netherlands). After walking in the entrance, you climb to the small living area and kitchen, then up another steep flight of stairs to the en-suite bedroom which has a nice canal view. Some people may find this inconvenient but we thought it gave the place character and enhanced our experience. Guests have the entire building to themselves and their own front door. Pieter and Anne Marie were very welcoming and helpful hosts. Haarlem itself is a lovely town and a great place to stay if you want to avoid the tourist madness of Amsterdam.

Great location, easy walk to everything. lovely views of the canal. The aircon was great on the top floor as it was a very hot place. Good communication from host. We were able to check in early and could have left our bags there after check out if needed.
Haarlem is gorgeous and in our opinion , as a couple in our early sixties, more beautiful and quiet than Amsterdam.

This apartment is converted from a former storage building for peat, lots of character! The location was convenient for walking to restaurants , shopping and mass transit. Nice updated kitchen appliances including a small fridge and a washing machine . The beds are comfortable. The owner was easy to reach and accessible.
We knew there were stairs, but they are steep! Not all travelers can manage them. The bedroom could use light /darkening window curtains. We hung a cover over the drapes to darken the room at night. The bed is not a king, it’s two twins pushed together with separate sheets, etc. additional pillows would be nice too. The bathroom is tight , but it’s been updated. The noise from the street and the bar and restaurant below continues each night till after midnight, so if you’re not accustomed to city life, this is something to be aware of.

Quaint central spacious
I liked everything. Some travellers might have an issue with very steep stairs. We could not get the TV to work but we of course do not understand the Dutch systems.

We recently stayed for a long weekend. The accommodation was perfect for us as we were on a cycling trip and there is secure space in the entrance to store your bikes overnight.
Pieter (the owner) met us there and gave us all the information we needed which was very helpful.
It is a quirky and historic accommodation packed with character.
It is very well located close to the town centre and with amenities close by (bakery, supermarket, shops). There is a very good fish restaurant next door.
We loved it and would definitely return again in the future
I would imagine that it could be noisy outside (restaurants either side + a busy-ish road) but this did not bother us at all possibly due to the colder weather as customers were predominantly eating inside. The main thing to point out is accessibility….the two flights of stairs are very steep. Again this did not bother us as it was part of the charm but may not be suitable for all.

The apartment's owner met me at an appointed time, and showed me through the premises. He imparted a lot of useful and interesting area information and, although I had lived in the area several years ago, I learned a lot!
Nothing. It was a wonderful experience. The ONLY thing I can recommend is earplugs as occasionally the cafe next door made early morning deliveries.

Everything
It was perfect. It is on the center of Haarlem but very quiet place. Everything what you need is just few minutes from the hotel.

Turfhuys was wonderful! Cosy, clean, comfortable and steeped in history. There is a view over the Spaarne from the front window.

A building full of history, well maintained. Very comfortable beds and great shower. All we really needed in the property and Pieter was very helpful throughout.
Nothing to point out.
Some people remarked on the stairs - it is true you need to be able to go up and down steadily but that’s part of the property’s charm.
The downstairs toilet is well conserved to keep its old character, as it should.

The host was very helpful and gracious, one night I accidentally locked myself out and he came to my rescue immediately the next morning. The location is excellent, the beds were clean and comfortable, the kitchen was clean as well. I was expecting it to be a bit noisier considering it’s at a pretty busy area but it was actually fine!
It was a bit dusty, and you only had warm water in the shower for like 4-5 minutes before it turns cold. The downstairs toilet was a bit scary, my friends would call it the “dungeon toilet” haha so we only ever used the one upstairs that was very nice/clean. I think possible turning the dungeon toilet to a space for a washing machine + dryer would really complete the place and make it even more suited for longer stays. Stairs is a bit small for big/heavy luggage so watch your step or try to travel light!

Nice place, but check cancellation policy.
Had to leave after two days because of a COVID-alert and having to self-isolate for 10 days. Best to check cancellation policy for departure during the booking.
