If you seek a simple place in paradise, there you go. One of the nicest, most beautiful and best places I stayed in. Not luxurious, but all the more heartfulness.

How close can you get to Paradise? Pretty close! At least when you stay at A Rocha Watamu. Surrounded by untouched nature, birds singing, colourful lizzards peacefully walking by. Good traditional kenyan food and the possibilit to get in touch with the researchers and volunteers monitoring birds and reefs. Unforgettable sunrises at this dream of beach. An atmosphere as peace- and respectful towards the environment. Nice conversations with other guests or employees. This is indeed a happy place for all those who favor natures luxuries.

Right on the peaceful beach, comfortable room, very friendly community of staff, conservation volunteers and visitors. Good food. Insights to environmental projects and easy to get around Watamu. Loved the Mida Creek boardwalk and the Crab Shack.

Coming to A Rocha is like coming to a family. All people (staff and guests) are really nice and welcoming. The location could not be better, if you like to be in nature and 2min walk from a beach. Staff helps out with anything (getting a tuktuk, finding a party, secured my breakfast when I slept in, provided vegetarian food for me). Value for money is really great
Everything was really amazing, so I can’t complain. If it was mine, I would probably build a “relax and chill out area” (with two hanging beds or hammocks e.g.) at the round place with the view over the trees and the sea. That would be the icing on the cake

The staff were friendly. The dinning hall atmosphere was really fun with lots of interesting conversations. They encouraged me by responding well to my needs though they had to multi-task. This is a conservation study center, not a hotel per se.
The inquiries phone number doesnt work so you cant confirm your booking. There is no dedicated hospitality person who is trained to take care of clients. Clients don't speak up about their experiences so the staff dont know where they are going wrong. There is no hot water in some rooms. There was no person to bring hot water in buckets to supplement. There is no privacy for some rooms because the windows have no blinds. People on the corridor can see right into the rooms. It is hot but people keep their curtains drawn for privacy which makes the rooms hot. The cooking is creative but sometimes poor. There was too much salt in the food most of the time. However when I suggested that they cook me different items, they were very gracious and worked hard to provide for me. I found it interesting that they required us to wash dishes. That was no problem but for the rates we paid, it should have been supplemented. The drinking water was really salty and the water in my room had been there for so long that it had grown stalactites in the bottle- pretty gross. I had to go out to buy bottled water at a pretty high cost cos transport and supermarket prices are high in this tourist area. This needs to be fixed.

Superfriendly people and a good location

There’s no need for five star accommodation when the simplicity, nourishing food and warm welcome of the staff makes a more real and home-away-from-home atmosphere. The wildlife and volunteer work are central to Arocha’s spirit. The turtle conservation centre is just across the road. It depends what you are looking for, but this is a rare and accessible place to stay.

•The location is good, quiet and serene; away from the daily life bustles & hustles, a place to forget all your worries and trials.
And there is no TV or Radio, but there is internet, but confined near the reception or dinning zone alone. So if you are into the digital entertainment, have your laptop or portable BT speaker; but WHY when all you need is to detoxify the mind?
•It is only 85m to the beach and the beach is great... Relieves seeing the ocean in its playful form, like a child the waves are so cheeky.
•The architecture of the buildings is superb; know that ancient simple interior designs that are classical? I must put up a mancave that resembles my MIDA unit that I called home for the 3 nights.
And the units are not many by the way - they are few, so no fear of large population... Is a pure vacation centre.
•Communal meals; I loved this so much, unlike current cases where we are more private, at A ROCHA the meals are served in a dining area at a specific time and all present join to eat. We got an opportunity to interact and know about each other in detail... Was awesome.
A ROCHA, a place to visit always when free.
My stay was limited.
Wishing had taken more time to enjoy there.

Lovely location. Right on the marine reserve with crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. Close enough to Watamu main beach and other fun activity sites. We loved the that it was a conservation centre!

The location is beautifully located just a minute walk to the beach, immersed in nature, with lovely staff.
I can only mention it would have been perfect if there had been WiFi access from the room. Even so, the common areas have stable internet access, available for everyone to use, including a lovely terrace with a beautiful sea view.

The staff were wonderful and the location is amazing - under a minute to a beautiful beach

The location is fantastic and most of the staff were incredibly helpful. I loved that we could get nutritious and delicious food at A Rocha (brekkie, lunch and dinner). Rooms were rustic and basic but perfect.
I found the hostel and staff were more geared towards longtime travelers in Kenya or people very familiar with the area. The airport transport that we had pre-organised was over 30min late and because there's no WiFi at the airport/I didn't have a local sim, I wasn't sure if they had forgotten me or if there was another issue. Again, when trying to book flights there was an issue and I needed to speak to the airline. No-one was able to assist in using a phone/calling and the WiFi connection was intermittent.
These were issues that I could have easily avoided had I had a local number or been familiar with the payment system in Kenya.
