About this house rental
You could not get much closer to the water than in this beautiful camp. Situated on Crawford Pond in Union ME, this camp is ideal for a Maine lake vacation.
Why? So many reasons…
First, the lake is wonderful. Crawford Pond has no public access which means that it is very quiet and unpolluted. There is very little boat traffic even in the height of summer, and the water is lovely to swim in. There is also lots of wildlife, with loons as a staple but also common sightings of bald eagles, kingfishers and other birds, not to mention the bass that lurk in the reeds. Unlike many of the lakes nearby, Crawford has both islands and rivers to explore (with the largest island being public land on which you can hike, camp and picnic). The camp faces east so gets the sun in the morning, with beautiful sunsets visible from the dock. We provide a canoe (with life jackets etc), a dock and a swim-raft with seats to relax and enjoy the lake.
Second, the camp is pretty special. It is one of the earliest camps on the lake, dating from around 1900. It has been remodelled recently and has all modern conveniences (wifi, a/c, washer/dryer, modern kitchen). What makes it unusual is that it is so close to the water. The living area is large and is surrounded by windows, and when you sit there it feels like you are actually on top of the lake. At various times of the day the sun reflects off the lake making beautiful ripples on the ceiling.
The open plan dining/living area has a couch, TV, and space for 4-6 to eat comfortably. The camp sleeps 4 with a master bedroom (queen bed) and two twin beds in the back bedroom. There is a bathroom with shower and stacked washer/dryer. Outside there is a grill, a porch with outside seating and a campfire ring.
If you tire of the lake, there are many things to do and see nearby. From the microbrewery just down the road to windjammer cruises on the sea from Camden, or just exploring the nearby towns of Belfast and Rockland.
For years this camp has been called Shangri-la, we think it is well named - it is a bit of heaven on earth!

This is a very nice home on a beautiful pond. The host is accommodating, pleasant and helpful. This rental is very clean and I would recommend staying here. There is just a couple of things that would have helped me prepare for my stay if I know ahead of time or were in the listing. The home is on a small downward hill and you must step off the dock to get into the water. There isn't a clear access point. The stairs to the bedrooms are steep and may be an issue for anyone with walking or balance issues. The water is lake water but honestly was not an issue for us at all, just something to know before you rent. We had a great week and the fire pit was an evening ritual. Thank you for letting us rent your home.

I enjoyed every moment of my stay here. The cabin and setting are truly special and just what I needed in terms of a tranquil retreat. I loved listening to the loons at night and sitting out by the firepit or on the porch in the early morning and again at night. I hope to return again next year.

Quiet location, even in summer, and a very well-maintained, clean, modern cabin. The view of the lake is excellent, and the access to the raft was appreciated by my kids. The canoe was a nice perk, too. We would love to return sometime!

A beautiful house on a beautiful lake is all you can ask for.
Ahhhh!

Lovely property and camp, beautiful lake and the sound of the loons is melodic. Be aware that water is pumped from the lake so is not drinkable and must be boiled for cooking. The bathroom and beds are up a fairly steep staircase in case you have mobility issues. Matt is a wonderful host and very responsive. Overall a great stay!

The cottage was spotless, beautifully appointed, and stocked with everything we could possibly need. We enjoyed lake views from most windows..comfortable mattresses with high end linens...sitting around the fire, sipping wine while loons serenaded us. My two girlfriends and I stayed for my birthday weekend getaway and it couldn't have been more perfect! Thank you , Matt!

We came in from Houston to see the fall color and to get out of the heat. This early 1900 cabin is gorgeous.
Renovations have brought it entirely up to date and it's so comfortable. It had everything we needed. We loved being on the lake and watching the wildlife and the boaters. Union is a charming small town and everyone we met was so nice and friendly. The cabin was very convenient for us as we took day trips to the coast and to Bangor while we were there. Matthew, thank you for sharing your lovely property. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Amazing cabin on the lake. It was a Bucket List adventure we were very happy to check off the list. Super clean, Amazing view, good location to 2 towns and a Farmers Market. We would love to go back. The only thing is if you have bad knees, the stairs are quite steep, but for us we managed just fine.

The host, Matt, was very attentive to some minor details. The house is full of light with a bank of windows overlooking the lake in the living room. The kitchen was fully equipped. We were able to cook our meals with ease. It was spotless from the upstairs two bedrooms and bathroom to the kitchen and living area downstairs. It's very peaceful there at the end of September. We wished we had been strong enough to get the two-person canoe in the water. Matt said, if he had known, he would have helped us with moving it. We couldn't find the hair dryer but fortunately we brought our own. We want to tell all our friends about this special place in Maine!

We were so impressed with Shangri-La!! Literally THE CLEANEST and most comfortable home that we’ve stayed in - ever! The cottage is a beautifully updated paradise; immaculate, simply yet tastefully decorated (including fresh flowers!) with a gourmet kitchen and 5 star bed! We didn’t want to leave. Literally right on the water as described, it evokes instant calm as you gaze out at the lake-sized pond watching ducks, loons and listening to distant owls. The availability of the canoe was much appreciated.
We used the fire pit each evening and enjoyed star gazing. The efficient heater was used two mornings. Did I mention the kitchen?! As a personal chef and foodie, I was thrilled with the counter space, farm sink, full-size fridge, stove and well equipped drawers containing everything we needed to prepare our meals. And again, the bed; perfection in mattress, pillows and linens. Our two small dogs were welcomed and the four of us enjoyed area hikes, apple picking and a trip to the coastline. We can’t wait to return.
Heads up about the uneven terrain in the yard if you have walking issues-it’s a cottage on the lake, so a few tree roots. (The tree energy was fantastic if you’re into that as I am.) Also, note the interior stairs are steep. Think high step aerobics class steep. If you have knee issues or little ones get the lowdown from the owners. The driveway is steep but not an issue with our Subaru. You need to bring your own water(some provided which was nice.Highly recommend

The location of this cabin was tremendous! So peaceful and serene. The views from the porch just beautiful! The cabin itself was perfect, just the right size for us and our dog. The stairs could use some rugs and padding. Tastefully decorated and welcoming. If you are looking for a place to unwind and truly relax - Shangri-La is your place. The host was easily accessible if needed. Highly recommend and hope to be back!

Idyllic comes to mind right away. What a great location! The kitchen has everything you could need to cook with. The bed was super comfortable and you couldn't buy a better view. The pond itself was more like a lake and the water was very clear. We really enjoyed the kayak and hearing the loons. There is a small market that has pretty much everything you would need very close by. It was so very quiet and peaceful. It was exactly what we were looking for and we were appreciative that we could bring our two dogs for the stay as well. Truly a gem! Thanks so much for letting us enjoy your cottage.

If you enjoy kayaking, listening to the loons and relaxing with a good book by the water than this is the place for you. This pristine rental was well equipped with anything you needed to feel comfortable away from home. In addition it was a great location for exploring nearby coastal towns such as Rockland and Camden when weather did not permit outdoor activities. We hope to return again in the future.

We had the most wonderful vacation at Shangri-La! It is a charming cottage - clean, bright and so well equipped. Our host was quickly responsive and easy to contact. And the view . . . fantastic! We were out on the lake every day. Our time went way too quickly, and we’re planning to come back again.

This cottage is exactly like the photos. Very accurate description of property and what is included. Outside has the charm of a quaint lakeside cottage with an inside that is welcoming, fresh and updated. Kitchen area had everything needed and extras. Cooking knives sharp, all necessary utensils and some common spices. Grill spotless. Beds comfortable. Cottage design/layout well done. Pond is quite and plenty of wildlife to view and hear. Union area perfect base to explore the surrounding midcoast towns. Many activities of all interests close by or short drive away. Loved so much already booked for next year.

The cabin was absolutely pristine! Very well done space. They have everything you need and then some. Beds were very comfortable with well appointed bedding and blankets. It had a stunning view. My daughters loved the porch and couch outside as they are big readers and lounged there and read some books when we werent sightseeing. A few things to note are the steepness of the stairs, for some this would be too hard, additionally though the downstairs furniture is nice, it is small, it’s hard to get comfy in with a family of four or my husband who is 6’2….perhaps some small ottomans to put legs up or an additional small couch;) we loved being able to bring our small dog along! We will definitely be back:) Easy directions, take note it is steep heading down to the cabin! we went into Camden multiple times, be sure to go to the owl and turtle for books and coffee, we went out on a lobster lighthouse boat tour on the “lively lady” highly recommend them, there’s a cafe and deli with a beautiful view to grab some awesome baked goods and side dishes, mariners restaurant also has a nice outside view we went to for a reasonably priced breakfast. For shirts we loved Asymmetree, great designs and more modern styles plus a lovely lady working there! We had an amazing stay!! Thank you from Columbus Ohio!

Everything we needed.
We would love to come back when it is warmer and sunny.

We loved our stay at this beautifully decorated cabin! Being right on the water was very peaceful and relaxing! We especially loved listening to loons in the evenings. A 4-wheel or all wheel drive would be best to get in out of the lane. Matthew was a great host, was quick to reply to all our messages and help in anyway he could. We would highly recommend this lovely place.

The stairs in this camp are narrow and steep and turn at a small partial landing. I had no problem when I was not carrying something, but my daughter who has a mild physical disability had to create a strategy of partial crawling for the last few stairs at the second floor. I would not bring very young children or old people here. One of my dogs fell off the front porch at the highest end, not hurt, but quite a fright. Otherwise the place was perfect.
The owner was helpful and responded immediately to texts. The kitchen had every imaginable implement making cooking a pleasure. The view was perfect and the sounds of loons at night were hauntingly beautiful.
We hit bad weather for our early season vacation. We had the comforts of home in the house and were able to enjoy time in conversation, reading, and streaming. No outdoor activities to report on sadly. But boy the lake looked tempting for a good weather visit.

House was sparkling clean and appreciated the lack of Knick knacks and other stuff that collects dust. Linens were super comfortable. Beautiful Camden is very close and the drive to the top of Mt Battie is worth it! Hikes in Camden Hills State Park rival Acadia for views. We loved learning about the Puffins in Rockland as well.

It was just my husband and I looking for a quiet weekend away - and that's what we got. The cottage was wonderful - everything you could think of was there, the furnishings were comfortable, as were the beds. It was SPOTLESS and we tried to leave it in good nick as well. The evenings facing the pond were so quiet and dark - no light leaking in from anywhere. It was just wonderful! We hope to go again.

Thanks, again, Matt, for sharing your gorgeous property with us! We chilled, read, played games and just enjoyed the view of the pond. For anyone new to this listing…it’s exactly as it appears—clean, simply furnished, comfy, beautiful kitchen, amazing view right on the water, etc!
Two not-to-miss new things we did this trip: a drive up to the top of Mt. Battie for fabulous views and a chair-lift ride/hike down Camden Snow Bowl (if you visit in Oct!). Very fun! Along with our Pour Farm Brew trips, of course!!
Already secured our next trip to Shangri-La!!
Thanks!!
