Treetops is a vintage cottage compound and ultimate multi-family or large family retreat location. Treetops is a unique footprint, the only Saugatuck rental with three neighboring door-to-door cottages. The complex is the perfect mix of gathering space, close enough for family and friends to share in every activity yet retreat to individual living spaces. All cottages feature multiple screened porches and views of the harbor or wooded dunes. Cottages are located within feet of each other as they surround a shared fire pit, professionally maintained hot tub, and vast amounts of decking for outdoor grilling and seating for the whole family! Treetops guests are also granted additional access to a nearby property located on the harbor seawall. This area can be used for close-up harbor viewing and picnics!
WHY THIS LOCATION?
A unique property requires a spectacular location and activities. Treetops is no exception. This spot is home to a rare combination of the Saugatuck Harbor, Saugatuck Chain Ferry, private dock (upon request), downtown restaurants/shops, Mount Baldhead, hiking, and Oval Beach. As the primary means to access Lake Michigan, the harbor is full of boats, music, and other fun sights viewable from the cottage porches, firepit, or nearby private dock. Positioned directly across from downtown Saugatuck, the complex is perched on a 50 foot dune that overlooks the entire downtown area.
A short walk leads to Saugatuck’s famous public Chain Ferry that shuttles between downtown Saugatuck and the cottages, no driving or parking needed. There is also a $1 bus that will take you downtown and back if the chain ferry isn’t running. Harbor views and downtown access are fantastic, but no vacation is complete without the beach. The complex is located across the dunes from Lake Michigan and the award-winning Oval Beach, the best and largest beach in the entire area! Open daily; the beach is accessible from the cabins via a short 2-minute drive (or 15 minute hike).
When’s the last time your weekend plans involved art, shopping, sightseeing, delicious food, and a good glass of local wine? When you’re here, it’s easy to squeeze everything into just a few days! Or if the hustle-bustle isn’t your thing, cozy up in the cottages with fantastic views of the woods and harbor, just steps from Lake Michigan. There really is something for everyone! Enjoy all that Saugatuck has to offer, just 2.5 hours from Chicago.

What can I say?! We had a blast! It was the perfect place to celebrate our oldest sons' 40th birthday in STYLE! The 3 cottages are all beautiful, well-stocked, clean... everything we needed and more! The common areas (fire pit, hot tub and outdoor tables) were popular gathering spots. The locations to the Chain Ferry was super convenient and the drive to Oval Beach was so quick (we tried walking it once, and while it is totally walk-able, it was a bit far for tired kids!) My husband and I took the Dune Buggy Cottage (without AC) and loved it! With windows open, you didn't even notice that it had no AC. Everything was top-notch! Thank you for helping us create a memorable getaway for our family!

We had a fantastic stay at the cabins. There where a few draw backs. If you are handicap, elderly or have trouble with a lot of steps this place would not be for you. There are no curtains in the two main master bedrooms which do not give any privacy. The room that is in the Big Red downstairs is not really appropriate for children as it is totally separate from the rest of the cabin. It would work better for adults. Also the smaller cabin does not have ac so bring some kind of fan for you to use. Other than those few things we had a great time!

We loved the location of this property. We crossed Lake Kalamazoo by chain ferry and also drove around to town. Tons of coffee shops and restaurants. We were right next to Oval beach which was just lovely.
Two of our three cabins on the compound were recently renovated and were well stocked with linens and kitchen/cooking utensils. and some paper supplies. The kids and grandkids quickly claimed their cabins and rooms.
The third cabin was furthest up the steep hill and was a property with a comfortable queen bed and serene screened in porch. The bed area did have glass doors and windows with screens. There is a bathroom in cabin; the shower is outside with some cover. Do not expect complete privacy in this very open-concept cabin. It has no air conditioner, and we knew that going into this. Our first two nights were extremely hot and humid. Although there are ceiling fans, we borrowed a tower style floor fan from one of the kids. After a severe storm passed through one night overnight, things cooled off.
The owner Erica was very responsive to all our questions before and during out trip. We had eleven in our group. There is plenty of room for all. We used the hot tub and grill several times. There are two extra-large picnic tables and two iron table and chair sets. So, plenty of places to gather for games and meals. The fire pit was very easy and nice. Great family memories here!

This Vrbo was perfect for our mixed group of girlfriends. It allowed for lots of gathering time in the various collective spaces, but also offered separate cabins for privacy and down time. The cabins were really well equipped with supplies (rare for some vacation places!), and they were super clean. Erica was exceptionally responsive to all of our needs and requests! The location is prime: 3min drive to the beach and less than 10min from restaurants, bars, coffee shops and shopping!

The cottages were a perfect backdrop for our family holiday. Saugatuck is near and dear to our hearts and has been part of our family memories for so many years. Each cottage was set-up with everything you need. The location couldn't be better.

This is a fabulous spot for a sizeable family group, with three separate buildings on a high hill overlooking the harbor. It’s a steep climb up a lot of steps but worth the view and privacy it affords. There’s plenty of space for gathering outside on the back patios/decks with a large picnic and mesh metal table, we seated up to 20 for a family baby shower with little trouble. Not as much seating space inside, but a screened in front porch open on 3 sides keeps things cool and bug free, with a table for 6 and about a half dozen other chairs. It’s a 15 minute mainly uphill walk to oval beach and into town via the chain ferry, and you can rent boats from a place almost across the street. Park street has a bit of traffic as it’s the main road to oval beach but everyone pays attention to the 25mph speed limit and you’re 30-40 feet above it so easy to tune out most of the time. Parking is easy. Kitchen is well appointed and everything very clean.
The bedroom layout requires close attention- the vrbo description didn’t have it quite right. Here’s the skinny but check with the host to make sure it’s current: main house has 2 bedrooms on main floor each with a king bed. Downstairs with its own entrance (external staircase) is a room with a single trundle (not bunk) bed for two individuals. In a second house is one bedroom with a queen bed and a comfortable pull out sofa in the living room. On a screened in porch is a single trundle bed (but no mattress in the trundle). In a third house is a studio type room with a queen size bed. Pay attention this can cause a bit of turbulence if you arrive expecting otherwise….
Btw the third house is said to have an outdoor shower which it does but a) it’s private with a wraparound shower curtain and b) has hit and cold water taps, so it’s not as primaries as it sounds. Also the hot tub is great and also has a warm outdoor shower adjacent.
The host is super responsive (even delivered new extra blankets when we couldn’t find some for cool nights). Definitely would return and recommend.
