About this lodge

Enjoy level, sandy shorelines and amazing sunsets with the western exposure from the elevated lodge. 5 acres lot with over 300 feet of lake frontage, the Lodge is the perfect retreat for any family or group of friends.

Calderwood Lodge features 11 Smart TVs, the original 20 person bar w/pool table & arcade game. The lodge has six bedrooms!

The shoreline borders Bone Lake. Bone lake stretches 1,665 acres and has a depth of 43 feet. The immense size of the lake makes it home to excellent fishing. Musky, northern pike, and bass are just a few of the trophy fish that can be caught on the lake.

Other Highlights:
The Calderwood Lodge also contains a great deal of history.
The Lodge was constructed by Charles Calder between 1918 and 1922. During these five years of construction, Calder used natural stone and lumber from the surrounding Bone Lake region to build the lodge. Calder grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he owned a successful van and storage business. Many of the profits from the van and storage business were reinvested into land along Bone Lake. By 1891, Calder acquired a total of 720 acres on the shore of Bone Lake. At the time, the land had an estimated value of $22,000.

Throughout the roaring twenties and up until the Great Depression, the lodge consisted of 14 rooms and 7 additional cabins. The wealthy came from all parts of the Midwest –Chicago, Milwaukee, Iowa, and the Twin Cities–to stay at the famous lodge. Guests arrived in Luck by train, where they were then chauffeured to the lodge. The lodge provided the wealthy guests with expensive dinners, reaching prices as high as $6 a plate (or $98 in 2018 dollars). Furthermore, the water in the springs contained high levels of lithium, which had high medicinal value during the 1920’s. Consequently, many customers arrived with large containers so that they could bring the water home with them.

Although the prohibition began in 1920, strong evidence suggests that the lodge continued to serve alcohol. The alcohol was hidden across the lake in concrete storage vaults. Boats transported the alcohol across the lake.

The lodge’s fabulous reputation caused the world’s most notorious gang members to visit it. In the late 1920’s, Al Capone frequently stayed at the lodge with different friends. John Dillinger and his gang also stayed at the lodge in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Dillinger’s gang would park their convoy of Ford Model T’s near the lake on a dirt road that now forms 240th Avenue. Additionally, gang leader Ma Barker and criminal Alvin Karpas were also known to have stopped in the lodge during their trips to Fremsted Lake in Webster, Wisconsin.

We had a great week at Calderwood Lodge. The air conditioning worked great (it was a hot week). Bone lake was great for swimming. We had plenty of room to spread out and the many steps to the beach provided lots of exercise.

The house and property worked great for our family vacation! There were 16 of us ranging in age from three to sixty six. Lots of steps to the lake but good exercise. The lake was beautiful and the fishing was good.

The place ended up being exactly what we needed. Kevin was very responsive. There is a ton of space, beds, and TVs. My only knock would be that there is only 1 bathroom on the top floor with all the bedrooms. Our group would stay again!

We stayed at the Calderwood Lodge with 4 families (8 adults and 7 children between the age of 6 and 8). The house was awesome and we loved the modern/rustic aesthetic upstairs with the lodge/bar feel in the basement. The kids loved the bunk beds, the pool table, the video game and all the space to run around. Bone Lake is lovely and fishing off the dock was fun for all ages. There were a few minor things that didn't affect the quality of our stay but I'll point out for other renters. The first thing was that the bedrooms were all situated in the main hallway between the kitchen and the shared spaces at the back of the house. With young kids, it was hard for any adults to sleep in because of the noise of people moving to and from the kitchen. The second thing was that, while there are three full bathrooms, they are somewhat oddly placed. One is behind the kitchen on the main floor. The other two are in the basement to the left of the stairs and are separate men's/women's. The downstairs ones were super convenient for cleaning up from the lake. The downside, in general, is that you had to walk through the house for any showering. Not a big deal if you are close with your housemates, but bathrobes wouldn't be a bad addition to packing. None of these thing would prevent us from renting again - more artifacts of the old lodge remodel. Super cool place to stay for a large group. Loved seeing the bald eagles around the lake. The nearby bar/restaurant was nice to visit for lunch.
