About this house rental
Amazing Views of Mesa Verde and the Milky Way: Getaway hub for family, work or adventure.
Enjoy rural life where you can wake up with the birds, gather duck eggs, and enjoy the deer, signs of elk, and singing coyotes at night. Mancos is home to award-winning cider and art, a comfy local brewery, outdoor tequila bar and tacos, and a bakery that’s a destination in itself. This is the perfect hub to combine relaxation and adventure: art, music, biking, hiking, pack-rafting, skiing, or National Parks … the choice is yours!
Our yurt is a social space with a mostly open floor plan and a few private spaces. The loft has a queen bed under the dome with amazing stargazing and a twin XL bed. The main floor has two private bunked spaces with a total of 4 twin XL beds. The futon folds out to a comfortable full bed as well.
Outside you’ll have a large, private, covered deck with a Blaskstone grill, outdoor dining set, and lounge chairs to enjoy the views.
You will have a full private bath with shower (no tub) and on demand hot water.
The full kitchen is stocked with all the cookware and dishes you should need (ask if you need something for that special meal). There is a full size oven, gas stovetop, blender, coffee maker, and toaster. Because we designed it to run on minimal electricity there is no microwave.
You’ll find brand new high efficiency washer and dryer for your use. Water is precious here in the SW so please try to run full loads and do only what you need.
Full heat and AC are run on a high efficiency heat pump mini split but the real magic for the mountain weather is the oversized wood stove.
The location. Upon arrival in Mancos on our first visit, people we met separately at the brewery, the bakery, the coffee shop and the cidery had already shared with us that this is a place with ‘steers, queers and everything in between’. We loved the humor and honesty in that statement.. .and the warm and welcoming way we were greeted wherever we went. The next day we put an offer in on a house and 6 months later we were building a yurt with a whole community of helpers. That Spring, 16 tiny ducklings arrived to help us launch Scrappy Duck Farm (follow our not so pretty learning curve on IG). Chaos, learning and laughter ensued as both the farm and the yurt came to fruition… great therapy to weather a pandemic!
The yurt. Craig used his studio arts training to design and build the interior so you may notice some of the cool details that extended the build schedule but please the eye. Katie and the kids are consistently tempted to steal your vacation opportunity by threatening to live full time in the yurt. One of Katie’s favorite things is sitting outside and watching the flocks and flocks of birds start and end their days as the sun rises and sets. We’ve tried to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable experience that matches this community. You’ll find plumbing and electricity, heating and air conditioning, wide doorways and hallways, accessible bed height, and pretty darn good wifi for a rural getaway. Layer up for temperature changes, bring boots to enjoy the mud and help gather eggs from the ducks, wear slippers for warm toes and to avoid splinters. If you’re lucky you’ll be treated to clear skies and the milky way or cloudy skies and incredible thunder and lightning shows. Mother Nature is not kidding around here.
Easy access - just come up our driveway past our house and barn and the yurt is right there. Please park off the circular driveway by the front door of the yurt.
From Mancos go south on Road 41 (Weber Canyon). We are about 7 minutes south of town on the left (1/2mile past the stop sign at road G where it turns to gravel). Look for the BRIGHT GREEN mailbox. We have a shared driveway so take the immediate left through the green gate and then up the hill. Please drive slowly as there are animals free ranging on the property.
We live on site and are available if needed. You have your own space and you may see us on the property. Feel free to interact as much or as little as you like.
You’ll know you’re getting close when you see the lone donkey guarded by myriad prairie dogs standing at alert. You’ll start to breathe again when you laugh and have to slow down for the peacocks meandering across the road at the stop sign. At dawn and dusk all of your senses will wake up as the flocks of birds begin and end their day flying en masse above.
This is a farming community so be careful on the roads. Stopping for cattle, deer, horses, peacocks, turkeys, and other wildlife is a common event - if you're lucky you may even get delayed by - or caught in - a cattle drive! We are surrounded by large acreage farming and BLM land and most nights can’t see a single man made light to the south. You’ll find most everyone is very friendly and welcoming.
This location is a perfect hub for 4 Corners Adventures but you can also keep busy right here in Weber Canyon. The rural gravel road is used regularly for walking and biking, horse-back riding and cattle drives. Many neighbors also free-range their animals so the occasional guinea fowl, turkey, dog, goat, or peacock may slow your commute.
More nearby adventures can be found on horseback trail rides from Mesa Verde Stables (1 mile down the road), or on guided mountain biking and packrafting adventures from our friends at Four Corners Guides at the end of the canyon.
The driveway is gravel and there is accessible parking right next to the yurt for easy unloading. No 4-wheel drive is needed but the roads can be dusty and muddy.
Few notes and rules to keep things safe and set expectations for the experience.
We built this yurt ourselves and want you to have a great time. It has been a labor of love on nights and weekends to create a home away from home for you. Please let us know if you need anything or if there is anything we can do to improve your stay or future stays.

The Yurt is nice and the perfect place for some family time.

Beautiful town and property! The yurt was fun to stay in and my husband really loved the porch and Blackstone grill. The owner is very friendly and gave us duck eggs.

The yurt was clean and amazing. Is everything you could want for a stay exploring Mesa Verde.
The layout was great for our two kids and my mom. Everyone had a little bit of privacy at night, and we got to spend time together in the living room and kitchen during the day. There is a bubble on the ceiling up in the master bedroom and the stars at night were stunning.
The backdrop of the duck farm was great, and the views were fantastic. There was tons of room for my kids to throw a baseball (outside) at the end of the day.
Mancos is a cute town with several options for dining.
If you’re visiting Mesa Verde or spending time in Mancos, this is your place!

We had a great time! It was a well maintained facility and a beautiful location. We recommend it highly and hope to return.

It was Mesa Verde that brought us to the area, and the view of the mesa from the yurt can't be beat! The yurt was clean and comfy with every amenity we wanted. We joked that it was like a Harry Potter tent- looks smaller from the outside, but there was plenty of room when we got in for all 6 of our adults/teens. When we did need to contact the owners, they were very responsive and helpful. Truly a lovely place to stay.

Loved our stay at Scrappy Duck Yurt. Our toddler especially loved the ducks. The yurt itself was clean and had every amenity you could need. Would stay again and definitely would recommend to others to stay!

We spent a day exploring Mesa Verde NP, another day biking Phil’s World outside of Cortez. We visited the Cidery, ate a delicious dinner from their food truck, visited a gorgeous garden center (on the way to Cortez) searched and saw the glamorous peacock down the road and relaxed at the yurt. We really enjoyed our 3 days in Southern Colorado and would highly recommend staying at this great property. Thank you!

We can now say we stayed in a yurt…a very roomy, clean and well furnished yurt! It was fun. We did hear the coyotes singing and the ducks quacking. The sunset and the stars were amazing.

Property was nice. The yurt was beautiful inside and out. You can tell alot of care went into creating this space. Many creature comforts were available. Stocked kitchen equipment. Full tea and coffe bar. The 3 heating options were perfect and kept us warm the entire time. Definately a place to visit.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Yurt at Scrappy Duck Farms in Mancos, CO, & I cannot sing its praises enough. Nestled so close to Mesa Verde National Park, the location is a dream for nature lovers & history enthusiasts alike. Even in November, when the nights were chilly, the warm & inviting glow of the fire inside the yurt kept me comfortably snug throughout the night.
One of the most enchanting features was the clear dome atop the yurt, offering a breathtaking view of the bright stars in the night sky. It was a cosmic experience, witnessing the celestial beauty while being cozily tucked away.
The yurt itself was stocked with thoughtful extras, ensuring that everything I needed was at my fingertips. From the essentials to delightful surprises, the attention to detail made the experience even more enjoyable. Going into town was a delightful adventure, with the local bakery & cidery becoming personal favorites. The culinary delights in Mancos are not to be missed!
The hosts of the yurt were exceptionally chill & responsive, adding a personal touch to the overall experience. Their hospitality enhanced the trip, making it truly unforgettable. Now, after sharing my experience, all my friends are eager to join the yurt craze & experience the magic for themselves. Scrappy Duck Farms & its Yurt have set the bar high for future getaways – an absolute gem that I wholeheartedly recommend to anybody seeking a unique & cozy retreat!

I and my two adult sons came for a week to this area for the first time for the 3rd Rifle Season.
Loved it, was central to all our off road/hiking adventures. Clean and comfortable making our stay really a memorable one… will book again!

Everything was wonderful! The night sky was awesome through the skylight. Perfect location for our stay. Mancos had some wonderful restaurants. Beds are comfortable, big bathroom, temperature easy to control. Only concern was some of the "construction" supplies left around property. I would definitely come back!

We absolutely loved staying at this property. The yurt was exceptionally clean and well appointed. Truly impressed. I would highly recommend. Our only regret was not having enough time to spend at the yurt! We were too busy hiking to really enjoy the amenities.

We had a wonderful time at the yurt on Scrappy Duck Farm. It had everything we needed, and it was so nice to NOT have a TV for a few days. The view and sunsets were stunning, the sky was clear so we could see so many stars, and the owners were very friendly.

The yurt waa super cute, clean, had an amazing view and comfy beds! Great for a quick 1 night stop across country, but would've loved more time there.

The yurt is cozy, clean and beautifully furnished. The wifi worked great! We enjoyed the town of Mancos as well. The yurt was a lovely place to come back to after a long but awesome day at Mesa Verde National Park!

Lovely property with well thought out features that sits within (distant) view of the entrance road to Mesa Verde NP. Our sons were thrilled when they got to meet and pet two ducklings, and our youngest was further impressed that the owners were constructing a back deck that would allow for wheelchair access. The property is quiet, and the loft area (the 'master' bedroom) provides a beautiful view of the night sky. Two separate bunk beds meant the kids each had a bit of a private area.

I live in nearby Cortez, but when my sister and her family came to visit, I wanted a place where we could all be together. This charming yurt just outside of Mancos, Colorado fit the bill. We awoke to gorgeous views (the photos, while gorgeous themselves, don't nearly do the view of Mesa Verde justice), played games in the evening, and ventured out into town (Durango and Cortez are near) or the forest in the day. I definitely recommend Scrappy Duck Farm for anyone looking for rustic charm with all the comforts of home.

We loved our stay at this beautifully appointed and lovingly maintained yurt! The host was communicative and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The yurt itself was pretty amazing -- plenty of space for our family of four adults with all the amenities you'd expect of a square dwelling. ;) You can tell the host is an experienced craftsman, from the repurposed hardwood floors to the loft and bunk bed areas. When the deck is complete, the space will be even better. We appreciated that they left a container of items we might have forgotten, like toothbrushes, etc. The best moment was waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the Big Dipper through the round window at the apex of the roof -- simply beautiful! Just a short drive from the town of Mancos, which has quaint shops and a great coffee/breakfast at Fahrenheit Coffee.

We were instantly intrigued the moment we drove up to the Yurt. Craig and Katie have customized your stay for comfort and SW Colorado ambience. They were quick and gracious to respond to any questions or requests.
The yurt accommodated cooking, sleeping, resting and reading perfectly. Curated books and games for children and adults are available. There is a sweet spot to sit outside to picnic or view the sun setting over Mesa Verde.
We spent 2 full days exploring Mesa Verde and plan to go back. Be sure to reserve tours into the cliff dwellings before your visit @recreation.gov. Listen to a few episodes of the podcast, Mesa Verde Voices, while you are there to understand this cultural treasure better.
We brought mountain bikes with us and had a beautiful 15 mile gravel ride heading left out of the driveway to the end of the road. We also were able to mountain bike at Phil’s World, 20 minutes away. I can’t say enough good things about that unique space. There are many other places nearby to ride and hike.
Delicious ciders and food trucks are at Fenceline Ciders in Mancos. This small community is charming! Our hosts volunteer much of their time to strengthening Mancos.
We certainly plan to come back to The Yurt at Scrappy Duck farm soon.

This was one of our top experiences at VRBO. This yurt is expertly organized and provides everything you need to enjoy your stay. Family of six and we had plenty of room to sleep, play games and enjoy the beautiful view. Minutes away from Mesa Verde. Gorgeous view of the stars at night. This place is special.

What an incredible stay! This Yurt is so well crafted and appointed to be simple, elegant, and artistic. There was a perfect amount of privacy for sleeping but open for shared time. Craig was incredible with communication and very hospitable despite being away from home himself. Morning coffee looking out over an incredible Mesa Verde view...what more could one want. If I'm out here again, this is definitely going to be a stop!

The Yurt at Scrappy Duck is an incredible place to stay. Comfortable, convenient, well stocked, beautifully decorated, and on a duck farm! The hosts are very responsive!

We LOVED the Yurt. We were all together and loved the view, the home, Mancos & the Cliff Dwellings.
We have 6 kids, but there was space for everyone. It beats tent camping!

Absolutely perfect. We came to Scrappy Duck Farm after two weeks hiking the Utah parks and Mesa Verde. It was the ideal spot to slow our pace and take in the beautiful surroundings. The farm was minutes from the lovely town of Mancos. The yurt was very spacious, beautifully decorated with wonderful kitchen and bath amenities. Everything was spotless and new, including a washer and dryer. The layout was great for a large group, with sleeping areas tucked away for privacy. From the upper floor bed we could see the night stars through the ceiling dome. All this within a comfortable drive to the local sights and parks. Our host was super accommodating, even left us duck eggs for breakfast. A definite “come back to place”.

Beautiful place-great view!
My family of four very much enjoyed our stay at the yurt on Scrappy Duck Farm. The Yurt is large and very nicely decorated with any necessities you would need for a stay. The view of the nearby mountains is amazing! The yurt was very clean and and comfortable. Unfortunately, we were only able to stay for 1 night, but I would recommend an extended stay :)
